Peewee's Playhouse was not originally a children's show. It was originally an adult parody of a children's show that Paul Rubens used to do on stage and then as an HBO special. After the special came out someone decided that if they cut out all the adult humor it could actually work as a real children's show.

It wasn't really a "kids" show. It was a great parody of the 1950s-1960s kiddie shows, that would entertain kids, but had a nostalgia adults' humor to it.. Almost every skit had a callback to an earlier era kiddie show. Back when it aired us (at the time) 30-somethings made it a Saturday morning ritual. Fun trivia - Laurence Fishbourne, the actor, started on this show, but back then he was Larry Fishbourne. And sadly, the actor who played Jambi recently passed.

My two young daughters and me used to watch Pee Wee every Saturday morning when they were about 5 and 7 back in the mid-eighties. Despite the unfortunate event that befell Paul Ruebens later on, his show was really good -- one of those that no matter what age you were, was really entertaining, and had a message imbedded in them for the smaller kids. It was one of the best kid's shows around!!

Pee wee Herman was a character invented by Paul Rubens who did stand up comedy. He was successful and did a Broadway Show called Pee Wee’s Playhouse which was for adults. Pee wee is a boy and that’s why he looks and sounds that way. The Broadway show was a satire of a kids program and was a tad risque. The show was then adapted to become an actual kids show on network tv on Saturday mornings but it was so clever people of all ages loved the creativity and camp of the show.

Pee-Wee was a character Paul Reubens created when he was with The Groundlings. Also in that group with him was Phil Hartman. They took his man-child character and developed it into an hour special for the stage. This was then shown on HBO. Next he got a movie deal and that became Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure which was directed by Tim Burton. The success of that led to a sequel and the kids show. A few years back, they brought back the adult stage show, and another movie was made with Pee-Wee trying to get to a birthday party in NY. Paul has managed to keep the character going for 40 years.

You might enjoy the first feature length Pee-Wee movie, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. It was Tim Burton's first feature-length directorial appointment, had Phil Hartman as a co-writer, and music by Danny Elfman. Also, although he used a different name (supposedly to avoid overexpsoure, but probably more likely some contractual requirement), Paul Reubens also lent his his voice to the amnesiac ship's computer in Flight of the Navigator, another mid-80s classic that was a staple of my childhood.

I’m really glad you enjoyed that. Pee Wee’s Playhouse was supposed to be his Playhouse and not his home. It was very innovative and creative and might have still been on if not for Mr. Ruebens’ arrest for, um, solo personal activity in an adult movie theater. After a long stretch in limbo, his career seems to have been rejuvenated, perhaps because the standards of expectations of public figures has changed. His comeback started with film roles without being in his iconic character and now there’s a discussion of a new film. Miss Evonne usually has a more distinctive appearance in the show, but her stay at home response is definitely in character. Loved that you played along. Also enjoyed Chewie’s first comment. Poob!

Haven’t watched yet but you probably find out why his was cancelled before cancel culture. Sort of made sense at the time but career not completely ruined ( took a heck of a hit though) just the kids show. Today likely career completely ruined.
