Here's the thing about Irish vs. Irish American. When an American citizen says they're Irish, it comes with the assumption the listener understands that means they're of Irish heritage. The same applies when an American citizen says they're Italian, German, Polish, etc. It comes from the time when immigrants from different countries were all living closely together. They took pride in their respective homelands and called themselves Irish, Italian, German, Polish, etc., as a way to show that pride. The phraseology stuck with subsequent generations. I have friends who are three generations removed from their immigrant ancestors. They don't speak Italian and have never been to Italy yet they still call themselves Italian. Nobody thinks they mean they have Italian citizenship.
@RosheenQuynh2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I always feel so hurt when people yell at Americans for this...
@moorek19672 жыл бұрын
Exactly, we refer to Irish ethnicity and Irish genetics. And I think people who have never been to the US assume that Americans are one large ethnic group. We have every ethnic group here and have learned to not only maintain ethnic identity but blend with other ethnic groups. Americans are more unique than Canada in that respect. Whereas we say "melting pot", they say "quilt". To be American does not mean American ethnicity, because there is no such thing. To be American means just that, American. And three generations from Italy is not really that far, that means one could still have cousins of the same generation still in Italy, and as far as I understand, Italians have traveled back and forth quite a bit.

His Conan Without Borders series is definitely worth looking at. One episode I would recommend is when he went to Greenland. That came about because while he was president, Trump claimed he wanted to buy the island for the United States. Considering it still belongs to Denmark, it obviously isn't for sale, but Conan decided to go anyway. It was pretty interesting. The part I enjoyed most was when he did the local weather forecast in their language. When interviewed by Anderson Cooper about it, Conan claimed it was like they put a bunch of vowels in a shotgun and just shot them out.
@bluebear19852 жыл бұрын
@tconlon251 Is that how that happened? I never watched his show regularly, so I had no idea. Either way, being part Finnish myself, I'm glad he went there. At 3:23, Conan mentions those were the shoes that Lizzie Borden wore. To put it into context, and give you a slice of dark, American history, Lizzie Borden was a woman accused of murdering her parents with an axe. Up until today it is one of America's most gruesome and famous murder mysteries. They could not prove she did it and acquitted her. And there is a great song that was made and it goes: Lizzie Borden took an axe And gave her mother forty whacks When she saw what she had done She gave her father forty one Conan has a very silly sense of humor but is educated and makes a lot of references to history and/or pop culture. Think of him like a Robin Williams of late night talk show comedy. Always improvising, being silly, making voices, etc.

Conan is great. I remember an episode from when I was a kid, like 14 or so, I'm 36 now btw, but he was talking being a Boston Irish American and his guest asked why he was named after a comic book character and he started laughing not at the joke but how he got his name. He had them pull up this old painting and said he was named after this guy in the battle. He also pointed out how absolutely ridiculous the guy looked and that he was the only man running away from the other soldiers. I'll never forget that because it just fit him so perfectly. Jim Gaffigan, also an Irish American and standup comic constantly makes fun of him and himself and whenever he comes on he brings an animated episode of "The Pale Force" where they're super heros...kinda, except Conan just wears a cape and briefs and his power comes from his giant nipples. He also gives him a very high pitched voice and makes him tiny. Those are great interviews. He's super self deprecating. I'm sure it's weird for people in Ireland how much we embrace our Irish heritage but a lot of our families were forced leave and the old traditions carried on and still do. I remember once as a kid even though we weren't very religious or even Catholic having to go to mass on St. Patricks. Most of the Irish who came to America were treated like absolute garbage, worse than anyone. Signs in building windows would say "Hiring: NO IRISH!", so a lot of them had to go work the railroads and get blown up clearing rocks and making tunnels, mining, being immediately tricked into joining the Union army in the American Civil War. You can imagine why so many dreamed of home. Obviously I'm not full Irish American, I'm actually only about a quarter each, Irish, Scottish, English, Norwegian/Danish. That's one of the reasons genealogy is so big here and tests like 23andme, Ancestry, FamilyTreeDNA. Side note: I found my mother's biological father's family through Ancestry and she goes to meet them in two weeks. They were gifted a huge piece of land by Thomas Jefferson in purpetuity, forever. They still have it.

The bit with the arms-he talks about the guy dancing around like that because he found a pot of gold-besides being comedic, that's a form of the "jig" that I think actually originated in the US. Irish (and Scotch) immigrated to the United States and settled in a region known as the Appalachians, and brought their music and dancing with them, but (as things do) it morphed into the the elbows and knees out dance that Conan was trying to emulate. Which I think eventually evolved into what they call "clogging", in its various forms. (Irish music also morphed into the form of music called "Bluegrass" in the US, I believe, with a lot of similar instrumentation used.) Because Hollywood knows little of actual Ireland (or anything outside of Hollywood, really), that's what you get in the older US movies (Finnegan's Rainbow, etc.) as "Irish" dancing. More myth than reality.
