A quarterback will spike the ball to stop the clock. It counts as an incomplete pass. The defense will stop so sometimes a fake will work. Trick plays are incredibly difficult to pull off because of the precise timing needed. But they're also the most entertaining.

That wasn't really a drone. They have a camera in most stadiums that is hanging from 4 wires and they are able to move it anywhere and up/down by adjusting the cables. So it will be low when there is a normal play happening, but they can lift it up out of the way when there is a kickoff or punt happening. Makes for some really good camera angles because they can get it to places that wouldn't be accessible otherwise.

Here's a piece of info that should help you considerably: Typically, when the ball is snapped to the quarterback, he either hands the ball to someone else to run with the ball, or he throws the ball down the field to another player. Usually, after the ball gets to the next player, that player almost always holds on to the ball until he is down or scores a touchdown. For anyone, other than the quarterback, to hand off or throw the ball is often part of a "trick play."

A fake spike: The idea is to signal your team to spike the ball which will stop the clock basically it's considered an incomplete pass. Then you get in position to run the next play. They signaled everyone to spike it, but then ran the actual play when no one was expecting it.

Most of these aren’t trick plays at all. They all are surprising plays, but you have to know football very well to know it. A lengthy explanation would be necessary for every single play. I’ll answer one question: “what’s a fake spike?” A spike is an expected play when the clock is running out and a team is desperately trying to score with seconds left. The QB takes the ball and immediately throws it into the ground in front of him effectively doing an incomplete pass which stops the clock. That’s called a spike. The team then has breathing time to plan a play to score. What happened there is the QB saw that the defense was complacent, and decided to pretend to spike but actually throw the ball for the touchdown.

Yes, Diane, you touched on one of the roots of American football: in its ancient past, as it was being developed, it was based on rugby. Just as in rugby, you were supposed to "touch down" the ball when you got over the end line. They don't have to do it anymore, but the term "touchdown" stuck!

In football, it's when and where the knees touch the ground that a play ends. So, "fancy run-walking" as you call it, is a tactic to stop someone behind you from grabbing your feet. Plays don't end at a certain line, it keeps going as long as the ball is in motion. After that, they get 4 tries (or downs) to move it 10 yards (30 feet). If they don't, then the other team gets the ball. After every successive 10 yards, if they manage to keep getting it before 4 downs, they keep the ball. If a fumble happens, usually all of the players will jump on it to see if they can intercept the play, or stop interception. Thus, the pile-on.

@@DianeJennings I don’t think anyone’s answered this yet but the one at 8:03 is considered a trick play bc USUALLY, a play starts with 9-11 players lined up close to the line of scrimmage (left to right from their POV) but for this one everyone lined up behind the center first (up and down from their POV) before quickly changing to 9 left to right at the line of scrimmage. And then they hiked the ball. This was probably done to confuse the defensive players enough as to who each player will cover on the play (and it worked just enough to allow the TD).

A lot of the football "Tricks" are about setting up your Offensive Line in a certain pattern, and causing the Defenders to react in a way that fools them. If you can convince them you are going to run with the ball, and they have more of the men "Attacking" off the bat, maybe you can get a Receiver clear enough to catch a Pass. Or convincing them that you are going to kick, and then do something clever. It's mainly going to be clever, "Inside Baseball" type of references, aside from rare ones, like the dude that "Camouflaged" himself and laid down in the end zone.

1) In American football, as long as the ball crosses the goal line (breaks the plane), it is scored as a touchdown. 2) When a team is out of time-outs, they can stop the clock by 'spiking' the ball to the ground as soon as it is snapped. This counts as an incomplete pass and, thus, stops the play clock. Some teams occasionally fake this by lining up as if they are protecting the ball until it is spiked, then pass the ball unexpectedly.

7:30 this play is known, as the announcer says, as the 'Statue of Liberty', where the quarterback stands still (hence the term statue), and hands the ball behind him to a Running Back as he passes. It can be a trick play as you see by faking the handoff and the quarterback keeps it and runs in for the touchdown. Earlier in the game the same team ran the same play with the handoff. This gave them the opportunity to appear to run the same play as a trick play.

A spike play is meant to be a nothing play it is used to stop the clock when time is running out. The QB spikes the ball to stop the clock and in that play the QB faked the spike and passed it so the defense was not covering the receiver.

Back in the day when nose-guards didn't exist, helmets were made of leather and there was just one 11 man team for both offense & defense we relied on the Statue of Liberty play to get the job done..

You're right that the tricks are usually simple things, but the reason why they work is that everything moves so fast you have a split second to commit to a response- and sometimes if you're off by only a foot the other player sees a gap to exploit.

The idea with the “on side kick” is to kick the ball close to your team while bouncing it off one of the opponents allowing your team to recover the ball and retain possession ....on a kick off to the other team one of the opponents must touch the ball before it is legally recovered if not it downs the ball rather than recovering it.... it’s a bit risky to do because if it fails it can give your opponents a good starting position

A little over a hundred years ago they did have touch to ball down to the end zone in gridiron football (along with several other rugby rules that were changed or dropped), of course that was where the name Touchdown comes from, this was around the time American Football rules were being formalize so it could be played at the college level. There was a mix of rule changes for safety, avoiding bad/unfair play, and making it more exiting for the crowd; eventually enough rules were different from common Rugby rules that once international travel was easier it was basically a different game from Rugby.

Diane, The two guys who executed the trick play at 2:40 are friends of mine. Tavon Austin & Stedman Bailey. I covered them when they played in college, covered the NFL Draft the year they were selected and remain friends to this day.

So the play at around 2:30 was an onside kick. When it’s one team’s turn to kickoff to the other team, they can kick it short to try and get it back (the ball has to go at least 10 yards before the kicking team can recover it). The trick is that the kicking team did it by surprise, since there was still plenty of time left in the game that they didn’t need to do it. For the fake spike, a spike play is when the quarterback spikes the ball (throws it into the ground) in order to stop the clock. In the two from the video, both quarterbacks pretended to spike the ball, but ran a regular play instead, catching the defense off guard.

A spike is when the quarterback intentionally throws the ball at the ground to stop the clock. If the last play was a run or complete pass that didn't get a first down, the game clock will continue to count down. An incomplete pass will stop the clock so sometimes at the end of the game they will intentionally spike the ball in order to have time to setup and run the play they want to run rather than rushing to run a play in the last few seconds of the game.

To answer your question about spiking the the ball on those two trick play involving Dan Marino (Dolphins) and Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers), they were trick plays because normally a quarterback will spike the ball to stop the clock late in the first half or late in the game. Sometimes defenses just expect that and what happens is something like what those two QB's did on those plays.

A lot of these are dependent on very specific rules and scenarios. Like on 4:21. The rule is that the game clock keeps going until there's a timeout, the ball goes out of bounds, or there's an incomplete pass. So late in games, when teams may not have timeouts or they want to save a timeout and they need to stop the clock they will do a "spike". Which is a pass straight down to the ground. They lose a play but stop the clock. This time the team looked like they were doing a spike but they threw a touchdown instead.

Late in a game you sometimes "spike" a ball into the ground to initiate an incomplete pass and stop the clock. Thus saving time and saving a time out. Or to stop the clock if you have no time outs left. It costs you a down to do it.

An "on side kick" is a low probability play for the kicking team so recovering one is rare. The player only needs possession of the ball at the instant he crosses the goal line for it to be a touchdown. The LSU kicker doing a fake kick and running for the touchdown is very rare. They are selected for their ability to accurately kick the ball and not for size, speed, strength, or ability to catch & run.

A trick play is typically a high risk play that is called by the coaches in a situation that is not typical or expected. In order to understand them you need to grasp why they are high risk and why they are atypical for the given situation. The goal is to catch the other team off guard. And they are always plays that would not work without the element of surprise. So the timing and context is crucial.

8:19 "Oh, we were gonna do an offensive play, but we decided to kick. Get the kicking team out here!" And then one player stayed near the sideline and ran for a pass. You can only have 11 players on the field. Anymore is a penalty, but they followed the rules. There is a play clock that's a bout 30 seconds. That's how long a team has to decide their play and then start. That's why players ran off and on the field so quickly.

Spiking the ball is done to stop the game clock, offence is given 40s to make a play. If the ball goes off the pitch or is passed incomplete the play clock stops. The offence has 4 downs of the ball to cover 10y, a down is when the ball touches the ground or the carrier is tackled or pushed out of bounds.. Onside kick, usually after scoring, the team making up points, after kickoff if the ball travels more than 10y it’s the first person to grab it. So that’s the scrum

The one starting around 8:20 was quite a trick. The offense created a bunch of chaos by switching their players across the sidelines just before the play started. In that chaos, they "hid" a receiver over by the sideline. The defense didn't even notice he was on the field until it was too late.

The kicker can often be a smaller guy. Kicking is generally their entire job. That’s why it’s such a surprise to see a kicker running the ball. I have never seen a player use the end zone paint as camouflage, before, though.

It’s fun watching you try and make sense of these 😂 Incomplete forward passes stop the game clock. So when it’s nearing the end of a half and a team wants to stop the clock they’ll enter a “spike” formation and the QB just throws it straight into the dirt to stop the clock. 99.9% of the time you get in a spike formation, you spike the ball. Sooo, about the spike plays. There is a clock in football, which stops and starts to the amusement and contempt of most soccer fans. When you're behind, you often want to stop the clock. A quick way of doing this is to run a spike play - just get your team into a legal formation, snap the ball (to start a play) and then immediately throw the ball into the ground. This is a routine play that every team has in it's playbook. It is very often called when the team is behind and needs to score to win or tie, AND they've just had a big gain play. This generally results in the whole team having to run down the field and get reorganized, which burns precious time. So, the team will run down and quickly spike the ball, then consider their options. The defensive team knows and expects this, and generally puts out very little effort themselves on a spike play. Fake spikes - you run down, act like you're going to spike it, the defense relaxes - and you then *don't* spike it, but make a toss to one of your outside recievers, who runs by the not-very-attentive defense.

5:36 is a fake punt. An American football punt (kick) is like in rugby where one team intentionally kicks the ball far up the field in order to gain ground, but the other team (usually) gets control of the ball. Usually the punter's specialty is kicking, and he doesn't need to be the most athletic or fastest guy on the team. But the Louisiana State University punter in the clip had teammates blocking and a lot of open field in front of him.

The trick play is a lot of the time going to players that typically do not either run the ball, receive a passed ball or it typically is kicked and they fake it. there are many ways to pull off a trick play.

Since American football came from rugby, you used to have to touch the ball down to get a try at the goal posts, just as you had to in rugby back in the day. They just named it a touch down (eventually one word). They got rid of that rule before the 1900s, but the name stuck around.

So, I’ve watched your football videos about tackles and this one for trick plays. Tackles are generally always legal as long as they hit below the head (only became a rule in the last 5-10 years). It only recently came out that a lot of players were suffering major concussions that affected them much later in their lives, so they’ve tried to make the game safer for the players. In the tackle video, anytime a player was tackled without the ball, it would be considered a block to prevent them from making the play. When players were waiting for the ball to come down and they were tackled before the ball got there or just as it made contact with the receiver (person catching the ball) or returner (player catching the ball after a punt or kickoff), those tackles would be penalties for either pass interference or a hit on a defenseless receiver

Going a bit more in depth, there is a bit of speculation that as you said, the pads bring out even more brutality in the sport with the way players tackle each other. Yes, smaller guys are typically either very fast receivers with good hands, or they’re the kicker or punter for the team. To clarify between a punter and kicker, the punter is pitched the ball when the ball is snapped (that’s when the ball initially leaves the ground usually going to the quarterback behind the center (person holding the ball)), and he drops the ball as he’s kicking, hitting the ball mid-air. A typical punt will go 35-60 yards, depending on wind, how good the punter is, etc. meanwhile, a kicker, as you saw in some of those trick play clips, will have someone holding the ball against the ground or a tee, and runs up to kick the ball. You use a kicker for attempting a field goal, extra point, or a kickoff (kickoff happens after a scoring drive, which is anytime a team gets points) (extra point is one of two options a team has after scoring a touchdown, usually favored as it’s almost guaranteed to give an extra point, hence the name, and is a 35 yard kick (distance may be off) with the goal to be getting the ball between the yellow goal posts) (field goal is the same as an extra point, except you go for it if you’re on your last down and don’t think you have a chance of scoring a touchdown or getting a first down. Distance for field goals is anywhere from 15-65 yards, depending on the kicker, weather conditions, etc.)

I could go a bit more in depth with legalities of hits, plays, etc. if you want, as well as informing you of how the game plays and stuff. Regarding the stop and go bit around football, that is mostly due to the games being played on tv. The games themselves are usually about 2 hours long, but because of commercial breaks for sponsors and all that, it drags the game out an extra hour. They cut to commercials in most instances of a player being injured to give time for the player to receive medical attention if he’s unable to get off the field, as well as two minute warnings (there’s a two minute warning timeout called when there’s 2 minutes left in the second and fourth quarters, aka the first and second half of the game). There are also commercial breaks when a team scores a touchdown, then another after the extra point, and there are also commercial breaks after a field goal is scored, or there’s a change in possession (when the opposite team now has the ball)

That was an “Onside Kick” to regain the ball in the end of the game if the kicking team is losing. They only work about ten percent of the time. Hence the big deal.

In American football the ball has to cross the line of the end zone, before going out of bounds, or before the player's knee touches the ground, then it is a score. He can be in mid air go thru the corner of the end zone and out of bounds, that is a touchdown. Also when the quarterback signals a spike, the other team thinks he is going to throw the ball on the ground to stop the clock, but the trick part is a player goes into the end zone and the ball is passed to him. The defense thinks he will spike it, so most of them don't move.

Diane was a bit confused by the players actions after scoring. The statue pose ..... there was a time that the players had elaborate routines they would go through every time they scored. It was entertaining initially but eventually it became so extreme that the game was being delayed so the player could do his touchdown dance. It is not allowed anymore but what you will see are the exaggerated walk or brief statue pose. Enough to show pride/excitement and get the crowd up but not get in trouble from the ref

The biggest trick of all is why anyone would copywrite strike old football plays. It's not like how the game ended is in jeopardy. Besides Diane's only interested seeing the walking dances in end zone. Chewie wasn't interested in this at all, apparently contract renewal negotiations over treats, are at an impasse.
