This is everybody's experience with Baker Street. Everyone's like "What the hell is Baker Street?" Then they hear the song start, and they're like 🤷🏻♂️, and suddenly it blasts out the most iconic piece of saxophone music that has ever been made, and you're like "Hell yeah, I know this! Everybody knows this! This is legendary!" And then it suddenly randomly swaps into being this decent nothing song that nobody's ever heard, and you're like "Wait, what the hell happened? Where did the great song go?" I don't know how this completely fine okay regular basic song got welded to the most epic piece of saxophone music ever created. 😂😂😂😂😂

Before going solo, he was a founding member of the group Stealers Wheel, whose biggest hit was "Stuck in the Middle with You" in 1973, on which he sung lead. It went up to #8 on the UK singles chart and #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. The band would only release a couple of albums before disbanding in 1975. I still hear that song on occasion on the radio.

That would make Gerry Rafferty a double-one-hit-wonder like Rick Springfield ("Hang on Sloopy" with the McCoy's, "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" by himself) and Tom Cochran -- but only from an American perspective (as I heard he was like Bryan Adams big in Canada).

The group with Billy Connolly was called The Humblebums. This is the shorter version edited for the radio. On the longer version the guitar & sax solos were longer. Everytime I watch this I get the feeling the drummer moved on to help Phil Collins. Gerry went quiet for a long time after his brief time in the spotlight with this song. Between the Humblebums & this he was also in a group called Steelers Wheel who had a minor hit with Stuck In The Middle With You that had a brief second life when featured in Reservoir Dogs. Gerry's only other big hit was Get It Right Next Time.

I saw the title Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" and went who the hell is Gerry Rafferty, and what is Baker Street. As soon I heard the intro I went I know this. Why do I know this? I only vaguely remember it from the radio as one of those songs you like cause it's elements just feel good together. The tune doesn't knock out, but you like and register it, every time you hear it. I think, I mainly remember it from the Soprano's, and the fact that I just watched Narco's on the plane, and it was used in the show. Synergy, it's just weird like that. Great reaction video. There have been various covers of this song, including the Foo Fighters, Bonnie Raitt, and others. I think the covers replaced the sax with an electric or an acoustic guitar. The only other single he released that I can remember, is _Right Down the Line._ He was once with the band 'Stealers Wheel'. The band had one major hit, _Stuck in the Middle With You,_ a fun song that included an often quoted line: "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right ...". I've used the line many times, and I bet a lot of other commenters have used it as well. Another singer / songwriter to use the sunglasses and flat countenance was Roy Orbison. He was active right up to his death in 1988, and was cited by many other performers as a major influence. He had a number of hits, but you would almost certainly remember the song, _Oh Pretty Woman,_
@Jeff_Lichtman9 сағат бұрын
Great choice for a reaction! The lyrics are doubly sad because of how Gerry Rafferty died. I guess that happens when a song is autobiographical. Early rock and roll featured a lot of saxophones, but when electric guitar became the dominant instrument, saxes and horns became less common. "Careless Whisper" by Wham! is another song that has a prominent and memorable sax line. Groups that have used a lot of horns include Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, and Ohio Players. Gerry Rafferty co-founded the band Stealer's Wheel before he went off on his own. That band's most famous song is "Stuck in the Middle with You," which you've probably heard in "Reservoir Dogs" (you've seen all the movies, right?). Would you consider reacting to Bob Seger? Some of his best songs are: - Still the Same - Against the Wind - Night Moves - Old Time Rock & Roll - Shame on the Moon Thanks!

Dear Diane: please make sure you listen to the song "Right Down the Line" from this same album, one of the best love songs ever put on record. You will probably recognize some of it too, because it has become a staple of FM radio everywhere. But Gerry has a lot of very good songs, usually in this quiet but somewhat dramatic style. For a lighter, breezy and fun song you can try "Big Change in the Weather", another song from this era that came out only as a B-side (but KZbin has it). It's a little-known masterpiece. Happy discovery time!
@davidwillford311911 сағат бұрын
Since music reactions always get copyright strikes and make no ad revenue - hence no money for Diane - support through Patreon and channel memberships helps keep the music content possible. Before his solo career, Gerry Rafferty was in a band called Steeler's Wheel, who had a hit with the song "Stuck in the Middle with You." I assume you've heard it in the movie "Reservoir Dogs," where it plays in the scene where Mr. Blonde tortures the captured cop. The sax part is very recognizable, so I'm not surprised that it stuck in your memory from movies and commercials. Baker Steet in London was famous long before this song. Sherlock Holmes (and sometimes Dr. Watson) lived at 221B Baker Street in the Arthur Conan Doyle stories. The saxophone part brought to mind another fun song you might consider reacting to in the future, "Frankenstein" by The Edgar Winter Group. Having only been to London once for a day or two, I know Marks & Spencer more from a song. The Mott the Hoople song "All the Young Dudes" (written by David Bowie) includes the line "And Wendy's stealing clothes from Marks & Sparks." Apparently Marks and Sparks was rhyming slang for Marks & Spencer. "All the Young Dudes" might be a fun reaction as well. It's a good example of early 70s Glam Rock. Or possibly another Mott the Hoople song "All the Way from Memphis." (You may know it from the early Scorsese film "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.") Both are great. It sounds like Rafferty had the same aversion to fame as Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits - liked performing, but did not enjoy being famous.
