Now that our kids are grown and moved out we have an abundance of closet space. My wife shops at Costco a couple of times a month. The bulk things, like paper towels or toilet paper, go into a closet and we're set for several months. The meat department is exceptional, far better steaks at Costco than at any of the local grocery stores. Kirkland is their store brand, and it tends to be mostly top-notch. Well worth the annual membership, and noticeably better than Sam's Club, which is a similar concept.

Thanks Diane! We do have Costco in Canada. It has been a while since I have been in one though. Package sizes are just too big for one person. For the maple syrup I would make sure it is grade A and is the flavour type you prefer - golden, amber, dark or very dark. The darker the colour the stronger the flavour and is harvested later in the season, it is NOT more concentrated.

I worked at a print shop just a half mile from the world headquarters of Costco just outside of Seattle for years. I got to meet many of the executives that would come over to print stuff and shop at REI. One lady I got to know was real nice, we talked about how she and her family loved to go camping out near my hometown in Eastern WA state. I did some basic print work for her and made a poster for her aunt's birthday. Come to find out she is the head wine buyer for the whole company. There are vintners all over the world that would sell their eye teeth to get a personal sit down with her. When I worked the late shift, salesmen would come staggering in from the bar trying to get their presentations printed out for a 9:00am meeting. They would show up 30 minutes before closing. I would tell them I can get it done but it would be after hours so they would have to pick them up when we opened. So these men, half in the bag, would have to get their asses up early, come in and pick up the documents and high tail it to Costco headquarters with no chance to proofread their work.

You can actually purchase at the food court without a membership card (unless they've changed policies), so you could have had a soda and a legendary $1.50 hot dog. Worth noting that they DO ethically pay their employees a living wage instead of cynically wringing out every last penny of profit by paying starvation wages.

you have to understand that originally, costco and Sam's were made ONLY for businesses... you had to have a business and sign up with that business in order to get a membership and then you could have employees get memberships under your business. and the products sold were meant for businesses... office furniture, snacks, safes, cleaning supplies.. and it was all in bulk. even gas stations would shop there for snacks and cleaning supplies... (this was when there were still mom 'n pop gas stations). BUT people with business memberships would buy there for themselves or bring relatives to shop there... so the stores figured out that they could sell to the public and make a larger profit.. so they started opening it up to public memberships and the started selling more of the products they have now. groceries, cloths, household items.. ect.. but they kept the 'bulk' aspect of their products...

But people can't going with friends, or getting on friends cards so they could buy for themselves. Costco go the drift and opened memberships to anyone. I'm glad you finally got to see the excess that is Costco. So much stuff in such large quantities! They usually have lots of free samples, but it looked like the only one you got was the orange slice (which you didn't eat). Too bad. If you go there on a good day, you can have a whole meal of nothing but samples. Yes, they're mostly things like cookies and crisps, but it's free. My local Costco sells tires. You leave your car with them and go shopping in the store. By the time you're done shopping, the tires are installed. There's also an optician and an audiologist (for hearing aids). Costco's house brand is Kirkland. I've found that Kirkland products are usually excellent in quality, and the prices are low. They must have a team of people at their headquarters making deals with suppliers for these things. Costco has a reputation of being a good place to work. Another thing to like about them.

That's my local Costco! They are pretty strict with showing the membership card, but there's no need to worry on your way out once you are in. I've gone in there to get hot dog/drink or a pizza slice (without buying anything) no problem. A negative for Costco is that it gets annoying if you have an item you like and it's a rotational item that doesn't come back. Small price to pay since membership is cheap and you can get rotisserie chickens, windshield wipers, glasses and multivitamins at the same place Chicago Costco minutia - they just approved a proposal to add 60 more parking spots, add a small park near the river (next to Costco) and adding a seating area outside. The Costco is down the same street from Pequods (about a mile). Great vid Diane!

The packaged items in the deli like the fruit trays and taco sets are priced per pound, not per package, and most of their packages are around 2 pounds or more, so the pricing is quite a bit higher than what you marked. And you can always walk out of costco like you did without buying anything. People may go in to have tires installed on their car, visit the eye doctor, get a vaccination at the pharmacy, or take care of something at the membership desk without buying anything--so walking out with no receipt and no items really wouldn't draw much attention. Plus, members can bring a guest so the person at the exit doesn't know if you came in with a member and just left separately.

I am a single retired adult. I shop at Costco 3-4 times a year because they have things I use regularly and are not perishable at the best price in the area. I love that they have bulk packs of single serving foods in their freezer section (I have a small upright freezer so I have room). Usually I go at the beginning of summer so I can get a case of their $8 prosecco, which I use a lot for summer cocktails. In the fall, I buy a couple cases of the 4 hour firelogs for my fireplace. The rest of my purchases are cases of diced tomatoes and tomato paste, protein bars, Kerrygold butter, and I always buy a chicken or two which I remove and freeze the meat for stews, etc. Even though I don't buy much, it is worth the cost of membership for the things I do get.

You didn't have the real Costco experience if you didn't have to fight your way through hundreds of Chinese blocking all the aisles with their carts inside, and doing the same with their cars in the parking lot like we have in Southern California. I don't think you visited a large Costco based on how easy you got around the store and how quiet it was. The ones back east have less traffic than the ones in CA from my experience. I went to one in Birmingham, Alabama and there were probably 500 fewer shoppers than my Costco in the LA area. Very long lines at the checkout are the norm here. If you don't buy a lot it's not worth the hassle of shopping there even though there are good deals and high quality food. Best to go when you really need a lot of stuff and buy it all at once to avoid the aggravation.

Like your video - I stopped shopping at Costco because they only sell organic fruits and veggies ($$$). I did like their prepared dinner selections. I now shop at Sam's Club. Still a members only but a yearly membership is only $50.

Hahaha! You couldn't find somebody to go with who is a member? Half the population has a Costco or Sam's Club card. Very little difference between the two. Yes, small restaurants, resorts, clubs, churches also buy stuff at Costco and Sam's. You have to restrain yourself at those stores. They make their money on customer's impulse purchases. Go in to buy $15.00 worth of hamburger and leave with a $1200 TV.

Well - shock -- Costco IS a warehouse....and yes, you buy in bulk....single people will stock up on frozen food items, paper products, ie: paper towels, TP etc.. So you really do save in the long run.... I'm a single retired adult and go to stock up on toilet paper, paper towels, frozen foods....it's VERY cost effective!! For families it great!! Buy one item instead of three at the regular grocery! Cereals, snacks, great for a family!!!

I know it's too late to reach Editor Diane, but "Welcome to Costco, I love you." from the movie "Idiocracy" would have been a good clip while discussing the cult vibes. Never been there myself. I'm not going to pay for the privilege to shop. And whoever thinks $1.50 hot dog is a worthwhile perk has never heard of a loss-leader and probably drank a whole case of Kool-Aid.

I don't know why she's pretending going to Costco is a new experience. Europe is full of big box stores like Carrefour and Kaufland and more . In fact Carrefour was the original big box store started in France back in the 1960s. And the guy who owned Wall Mart went to France to check it out, was inspired and opened up Sam's Club here in the US. And Costco is a copy of Sam's Club. So this whole big box store concept originates in Europe, and there is no way this girl has not shopped there. The only difference may be the European ones don't require a membership.

My son, and daughter-in-law work at Costco only about 1.5 miles (aprox 2.5 kilometer) from home. I am the "mother-in-law" of the house (look up "mother-in-law home"). To be you did not know someone in the states that has a Costco Card so they could be your wingman.

They used to carry CD's. They were about $5 - $8 cheaper than anywhere else. Then, DVD's. they were so cheap! Then, streaming happened, and all that went away. Now, they're getting rid of books, too. I'm not a smoker, but they used to carry cigarettes, too. I'd see business owners taking $1000's worth of cigarettes out the door so they could sell them in their bars and pubs. I just recently became a member again, and have bought towels and a pillow so far.

I wonder if you told them outright that you lived in Ireland, if they would have let you walk through and even buy something knowing that you wouldn't be able to go there when in Ireland (Europe?). 😀... maybe not. Sam's Club is similar in overall shopping and is connected to Wal-Mart. Costco is not, so the brands in Costco might not be the same as Sam's Club would have... but they both have "a lot" and in bulk. Companies and organizations often have memberships, not just individuals, and it can be great for an individual if you have room to store the bulk and they are not going to expire too quickly. However, if you are a business, you are more likely to need larger quantities. If you have a friend with membership, you could go in with them and just buy your things with their membership... or let them buy it for you and you pay them back.

I have a choice of price clubs where I am: COSTCO, BJ's, and SAM'S Club _(Walmart)._ COSTCO is further away, so I have a SAM'S Club membership, and a BJ'S membership. A Californian retailer named Sol Price is the man who created Price Club. It was not entirely an original concept, a membership-only establishment already existed that could only be accessed if you had a membership and belonged to a trade union. Sol Price allowed anyone to purchase a membership, not only members of trade unions. Sam Walton of Walmart saw the success of Price Club and copied the concept, which became SAM'S Club. A former employee of Sol Price decided to strike out on his own and started COSTCO. Eventually COSTCO bought Price Club and Price Club rolled into COSTCO. While it is true that things can be purchased at a membership club cheaper, I have to be disciplined and only get what I want, otherwise the bill will always exceed $100. It just works out that way. As you noted: impulse buys. If you have a family then the cost of an annual membership is negated by the savings in just the cost of milk.

I've never been to a Costco but I have belonged to Sam's Club for years, and if you are ever in the Louisvllle area I'd be happy to have you come with me so you could enter freely and check out under my membership. Sam's is similar in many ways. I got an even slightly better price on a 36 pack of Mtn Dew Baja Blast.

If you have a family with several kids I suppose Costco or Sam's Club might be worth it, but if you're a single person, as I currently am, there's absolutely no reason to join these clubs. I don't need to buy things in bulk and wouldn't have the room to store it even if I did. The other thing is they claim to be so diverse in what they carry, but on a two occasions when I was given guest passes from friends and I looked for the things I wanted, which I could walk into any Wal-Mart or Target to buy, they didn't stock those items. In both cases I walked in, looked around, couldn't find the stuff on my shopping list so gave up and walked out w/out buying anything. For me there's just zero reason to shop there.

I am now very careful when buying from wholesale clubs. I learned a lesson years ago that made me realize that buying in bulk is better if you have a large family or you own a business. The lesson? First time I went to Costco, I asked if I take a tour through to see if I want to join, they said come on in. I toured through, went to the service desk, and joined. Then spent a thousand bucks on things, then I didn't go back for six months. Now I just go with my sister, who goes once a month. Still only go every few months. I'm a bachelor, so I don't use up the products as fast as others do.

Costco is really cool. It's kinda hit and miss though, like sometimes they have awesome stuff and other times not so much. We don't have a Costco in my city so I have only been a few times. They're really popular for large families and college kids because of the large quantities for the price. I think the membership system is kind of stupid. I hope you can go back with a card or someone who is a member. They also tend to have discount books there, which is cool. That price on the Kerrygold is insane.

I am pretty sure Costco will grant you a day pass to check out the place without having to sneak around. You need to go back and try the hotdogs and other offerings from their food area. Its very utilitarian. Like picnic tables on cement floors. But the cheap price for pretty decent dogs and soda, chicken bakes, pizza, etc is pretty neat and if you have a family feeding everyone for a few bucks is a minor miracle these days.
