Now that our kids are grown and moved out we have an abundance of closet space. My wife shops at Costco a couple of times a month. The bulk things, like paper towels or toilet paper, go into a closet and we're set for several months. I am a single retired adult. I shop at Costco 3-4 times a year because they have things I use regularly and are not perishable at the best price in the area. I love that they have bulk packs of single serving foods in their freezer section (I have a small upright freezer so I have room). Usually I go at the beginning of summer so I can get a case of their $8 prosecco, which I use a lot for summer cocktails. In the fall, I buy a couple cases of the 4 hour firelogs for my fireplace. The rest of my purchases are cases of diced tomatoes and tomato paste, protein bars, Kerrygold butter, and I always buy a chicken or two which I remove and freeze the meat for stews, etc. Even though I don't buy much, it is worth the cost of membership for the things I do get.

That's my local Costco! They are pretty strict with showing the membership card, but there's no need to worry on your way out once you are in. I've gone in there to get hot dog/drink or a pizza slice (without buying anything) no problem. A negative for Costco is that it gets annoying if you have an item you like and it's a rotational item that doesn't come back. Small price to pay since membership is cheap and you can get rotisserie chickens, windshield wipers, glasses and multivitamins at the same place Chicago Costco minutia - they just approved a proposal to add 60 more parking spots, add a small park near the river (next to Costco) and adding a seating area outside. The Costco is down the same street from Pequods (about a mile). Great vid Diane!

you have to understand that originally, costco and Sam's were made ONLY for businesses... you had to have a business and sign up with that business in order to get a membership and then you could have employees get memberships under your business. and the products sold were meant for businesses... office furniture, snacks, safes, cleaning supplies.. and it was all in bulk. even gas stations would shop there for snacks and cleaning supplies... (this was when there were still mom 'n pop gas stations). BUT people with business memberships would buy there for themselves or bring relatives to shop there... so the stores figured out that they could sell to the public and make a larger profit.. so they started opening it up to public memberships and the started selling more of the products they have now. groceries, cloths, household items.. ect.. but they kept the 'bulk' aspect of their products...

I worked at a print shop just a half mile from the world headquarters of Costco just outside of Seattle for years. I got to meet many of the executives that would come over to print stuff and shop at REI. One lady I got to know was real nice, we talked about how she and her family loved to go camping out near my hometown in Eastern WA state. I did some basic print work for her and made a poster for her aunt's birthday. Come to find out she is the head wine buyer for the whole company. There are vintners all over the world that would sell their eye teeth to get a personal sit down with her. When I worked the late shift, salesmen would come staggering in from the bar trying to get their presentations printed out for a 9:00am meeting. They would show up 30 minutes before closing. I would tell them I can get it done but it would be after hours so they would have to pick them up when we opened. So these men, half in the bag, would have to get their asses up early, come in and pick up the documents and high tail it to Costco headquarters with no chance to proofread their work.

They usually have lots of free samples, but it looked like the only one you got was the orange slice (which you didn't eat). Too bad. If you go there on a good day, you can have a whole meal of nothing but samples. Yes, they're mostly things like cookies and crisps, but it's free. My local Costco sells tires. You leave your car with them and go shopping in the store. By the time you're done shopping, the tires are installed. There's also an optician and an audiologist (for hearing aids). Costco's house brand is Kirkland. I've found that Kirkland products are usually excellent in quality, and the prices are low. There are two types of Costco warehouses. You happened to vist a normal public consumer Costco based upon the merchandise and tags you showed. There is a business center Costco and your regular costco membership card also works at those. The business costco have many of the consumer goods, but also larger versions if the manufacturer makes those. You will find items businesses buy such as commercial stoves, commercial washers, commercial restaurant equipment, and larger bulk versions of cooking supplies such as five gallon buckets of soy sauce, etc. As for canned goods, you may find those larger cans there such as half gallon of diced tomato. Businesses such as restaurants don't use tiny cute bottles or tiny quantities, so you probably won't see tiny things at a business costco unless these items are meant for a convenience store to resell or put into a vending machine.

I've only been in Costco a few times in my life, the last few times were with a family friend when I would visit family friends in Dallas. And it's definitely a mindset you quickly try to get used to, it's overwhelming. My mom back in 2009, did food demonstrations at Costco for two months, but standing for 6 hours continuously was difficult on her lower back(decades of walking up and down hospital floors as a CNA ( Certified Nursing Assistant) and age had her hanging up her apron. The large bottles of Laundry detergent are sold as single bottles in regular grocery stores. The load number of clothes that can be washed ranges between 150- 180 loads before the bottle has to be replaced. That's if loads of clothes are being done a load at a time. There are washing machines now that laundry detergent can be put in once or twice and continuous loads can be washed until the bottle is empty.

Honestly, the Costco yearly membership is worth it for a few items (even for my two person household). The rotisserie chicken for $5 is a staple and provides multiple meals. Kirkland Prosecco is around $8 a bottle and is made by La Marca of Italy. It's lovely, especially the rose. The Kirkland laundry pods are excellent (said to be manufactured by German company Henkel, who makes All and Persil) and one $21 container lasts us an entire year. Edited to add - I used Costco Travel for the first time this year to book a trip to London. The package includes business class RT flight, 8 nights in a nice hotel, airport transfers and 2 tours of my choosing. I priced just the flight; the entire package was $1000 more than the British Airways flight by itself. Costco rocks.

Have done this many times and it's not a big deal as I always have more clothes at home so it's not a worry. The packaged items in the deli like the fruit trays and taco sets are priced per pound, not per package, and most of their packages are around 2 pounds or more, so the pricing is quite a bit higher than what you marked. And you can always walk out of costco like you did without buying anything. People may go in to have tires installed on their car, visit the eye doctor, get a vaccination at the pharmacy, or take care of something at the membership desk without buying anything--so walking out with no receipt and no items really wouldn't draw much attention. Plus, members can bring a guest so the person at the exit doesn't know if you came in with a member and just left separately.

Costco started as a wholesale club for businesses only (bulk packaging for restaurants and resellers). It evolved into a membership club.. Their business philosophy is that you are essentially buying everything for cost plus overhead. Their entire profit comes from the membership fees. They keep the overhead down with their innovative warehouse style locations with items displayed in their shipping cartons. They also keep overhead and prices down by limiting selection of both brands and sizes. They have an excellent buying operation that selects quality products within a class and then negotiates price (If they really like your product but you are too small to supply then they will help the company upside while maintaining quality)..

One big negative about Costco is if you find something you want load up on it immediately, as they tend to discontinue items with no notice, like the 12 gallon black plastic totes with yellow lids. I have even gone back the next day for items and they are all gone. Also some stores do not carry the same inventory as other stores. For single folks, it tends to suck, as you must generally buy such big quantities they spoil or rot before you can use them up. Also know your prices before you go in. They are sometimes more expensive than other stores on the same item. They do have a killer warranty on what they sell though.

Of course they sell in bulk so this theory probably does not works bettet if you are single as it would if you were a large family, or especially a business like a restaurant etc. But as you could see they have a ton of different things, so pretty much something for everyone.

If you think the sizes of products are big in the regular Costco warehouse, you should check out a Costco Business Center. The BBQ sauce in a regular Costco is two 40 oz bottles for $8. At the Costco Business Center it’s a single 160 oz bottle for around $13.

Some of us have taken to using “a costco” as a unit of measure. For example, “a costco of toilet paper” is slightly less than you’ll use in your entire lifetime, but definitely more than you have a convenient place to store.

At BJ's Wholesale Club which is simular to Costco. you can get a day pass and be able to go shopping for the day. I wonder if Costco has the same type of thing.

As a Canadian in British Columbia, I would find it very weird not to be a member of Costco. I spend plenty there including gas for my car. It classified as a warehouse btw.

Flushable wipes should never be flushed but be put in the trash. Many contain plastic Microfiber which should not enter water courses, they also do not break down quickly and are still intact after being in water for over a day causing fatbergs in sewers combining with congealed oils and fat. Toilet tissue breaks down in less than a minute. Only flush the 3 P's, paper, pee and poo.

Love Costco, but like you I am single so it's good for some things like paper products, and now that they have premade meal kits, lol. Costco has come to England, Joel shops there, so maybe Spain is on the horizon. Maybe next time you are here, you can meet up with a friend from the channel that has a Costco membership, I'm sure you will figure it out. Diane, thanks for taking us along, hope you have a great weekend.👍❤️

From the USA and costco is fab! Our local costco is only a few miles away so taking a trip just to grab some gluten free bread or a giant tub of mayo it no big deal. They have items I can't get anywhere else so I go and grab one or two things and go thru the express lane. In and out in just a few minutes.

Must be a slow day as typically there's a long line up at the self-checkout express lane.

If you are not a member, you can still get into Costco if you have a Costco gift card. The trick is that only members can buy a Costco gift card. So you need to have a member buy you the gift card.

Well - shock -- Costco IS a warehouse....and yes, you buy in bulk....single people will stock up on frozen food items, paper products, ie: paper towels, TP etc.. So you really do save in the long run.... I'm a single retired adult and go to stock up on toilet paper, paper towels, frozen foods....it's VERY cost effective!! For families it great!! Buy one item instead of three at the regular grocery! Cereals, snacks, great for a family!!!

Costco products are priced to cover them buying the products, and the operation of the store. So what they charge for whatever you buy covers maintenance of the building and lot, utilities, and wages for the employees. Costco's entire profit margin is the membership fees that members pay.

I am pretty sure Costco will grant you a day pass to check out the place without having to sneak around. You need to go back and try the hotdogs and other offerings from their food area. Its very utilitarian. Like picnic tables on cement floors. But the cheap price for pretty decent dogs and soda, chicken bakes, pizza, etc is pretty neat and if you have a family feeding everyone for a few bucks is a minor miracle these days.

You can actually buy in costco with out membership. Just get someone to buy you a costco gift card. Ask someone that you know who has a membership to get one for you. They come in denominations $25 to $500. Or get it online but has to be mailed out to you.

Diane, Costco card holders can bring in a friend. The friend hands their card to the cashier, then you can pay with cash. You can ask viewers (in the city you will be in) to meet with you and you both have a shopping at Costco day. The hotdogs and pharmacy don't require a Costco card. The same goes for Sam's Clubs.
@rafaelorantes71855 ай бұрын
Oh yes you need a membership at the food court, at least for the last 3 years.

@@rafaelorantes7185 Wow, I didn't know that. I just thought about it and the last time I went to Costco was about 3 years ago. I used to have both Costco and Sam's cards, but I decided to cut costs and Sam's is closer to my home.

I am a Costco member and you don't have to have a Membership to buy in the pharmacy or the in store restaurant here in the US.The hot dog is more of a smoked sausage and a high quality bun and you can buy the sausages in the grocery section and they cost about a dollar a piece sold in a pack of 14 I think.very good.

Kerrygold is a great price at Costco. Even at Walmart it's $4.30 for 2 sticks. You can't buy liquor at Costco here in Texas, or I've never seen it sold here. About the only things I buy from Costco that aren't food is the TP and paper towels. One of those giant packs lasts me almost 8 months. I also get laundry detergent there, but it lasts a lot longer because I don't use that much, and only do laundry about once a week.

I have a choice of price clubs where I am: COSTCO, BJ's, and SAM'S Club _(Walmart)._ COSTCO is further away, so I have a SAM'S Club membership, and a BJ'S membership. A Californian retailer named Sol Price is the man who created Price Club. It was not entirely an original concept, a membership-only establishment already existed that could only be accessed if you had a membership and belonged to a trade union. Sol Price allowed anyone to purchase a membership, not only members of trade unions. Sam Walton of Walmart saw the success of Price Club and copied the concept, which became SAM'S Club. A former employee of Sol Price decided to strike out on his own and started COSTCO. Eventually COSTCO bought Price Club and Price Club rolled into COSTCO. While it is true that things can be purchased at a membership club cheaper, I have to be disciplined and only get what I want, otherwise the bill will always exceed $100. It just works out that way. As you noted: impulse buys. If you have a family then the cost of an annual membership is negated by the savings in just the cost of milk.
