Big Bird singing Kermit's "It's Not Easy Being Green" at the memorial carried even more emotional weight because, at the time, the future of Kermit was unclear. Jim Henson had always voiced Kermit himself (btw, I believe that's Jim at 3:09). The Henson family, along with Disney, asked longtime muppeteer Steve Whitmire to take over the role, but was months before Whitmire finally agreed.

All the sketches were the same, and most of the "letter of the day" and "number of the day" animations, except that there was one on the Mexican broadcast that wasn't in the US version, about all the things the letter T stands for. It ended with "T is for shark" ("tiburon" en Español) which obviously wouldn't have worked if they just translated it straight across.

When this news got to the producers of Sesame Street, Snuffy was officially "outed", in hopes that the abused children would be able to come out and mention they were being abused. If you can find the book Sesame Street: Unpaved (30 years of Sesame Street), it's an incredible book. Hey there, I grew up watching that show. I remember when everyone thought Snuffy was Big Bird’s imaginary friend because nobody had ever seen him but Big Bird. Cookie Monster was my favorite and I hated Elmo...especially when he spoke. I hate it when people spoke in the third person. Always thought what Bert and Ernie did for a living. They shared an apt. and even shared a room which was actually weird. They weren’t kids so I assumed they were grown ups that lived together...never seen them go to work tho. Also, who can’t forget The Count Lol. One thing that a lot of people didn’t know was Oscar the Grouch was the wealthiest person on Sesame Street. Sure, everyone though he just lived in that garbage can but under that garbage can was Oscar’s underground living property. Uh oh, your eyes are leakin' again! Here is some more sentiment for you: I was thinking about why I like your channel. I grew up with Irish grandparents and when I was young, we would have family relations and friends visit from time to time and I realize now that I was surrounded by lots of Irish people in my youth. Now my grandparents have passed and so have most of the family relations and friends and I am no longer surrounded by Irish people. So, I think watching your channel and hearing your accent provides some familiarity for me that I no longer have so I appreciate that. Thanks!

I broke out in tears at the Jim Henson memorial. When I was stationed in Germany in '77 and '78, every day at 6 PM, the day room in the barracks would fill to SRO for two shows on AFN. The Muppet Show and Star Trek. 20 or so guys crammed into an 8 x 10 room around a normal sized TV. In summer, there'd be guys standing outside the window watching. Loved Jim Henson. (I was too old to watch sesame street when it first came out as I was all of, and a very sophisticated, 14. :-) Thanks Diane! Cheers! DonP

If I could choose _which_ childhood memory (or memories) to lose, there are some I'd be happy to never revisit ever ever again. The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety show, today probably best known for hosting The Beatles in their first US performance.

Hi Diane! I'm gonna write some things that have already been writ, as well as things that have not. The juggler at the beginning is Jim Henson himself (creator of Muppets,) Ed Sullivan is credited as the most influential promoter of "The Beatles" in America. At least half of all Muppets productions were done in London, so I'm sure you got to see a lot of Muppets as a kid. The creator/voice of "Elmo" would eventually become the creative director of Sesame Street Muppets. I worked for "Toys R Us" when the "Tickle Me Elmo" craze was in effect. And I watched the Jim Henson memorial, and it's the only memorial in which "puppets" are appropriate. I loved it, and also got teary eyed. Your responses, Diane, are so genuine and appropriate, makes us love you so much as well. bye the way.... "D" is also for "Den"..... ;-)

In the 1970s, before cable TV got going, PBS was a great channel for kids. Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, and Captain Kangaroo were all invaluable to the growth of so many children. I always enjoy seeing your reactions to some of these programs that were such an integral part of American culture. I hope you have a great week. Stay safe, and Keep Smiling! 😎 💚💚💚🇮🇪🍀💚💚💚

I don't know how things were in other countries, but in the U.S., most children's TV shows made in the late 60's and early 70's were all more than a bit trippy. The writers and production crew must have been having a great time. The honest sincerity of all your videos is a huge bonus. Also, a big thumbs up to ED in this episodes. She made me laugh. Enjoy your week. As always, looking forward to your next production.

Part Irish myself (Irish-American, to be precise). Just found you on KZbin today and I think you're simply delightful! ^_^ Both your innocence and your humor remind me a lot of my own. Hehehe. Sesame Street was SUCH a huge influence on my life that it inspired me to pursue various word/language related endeavors later on! My goofy humor was largely derived from the show as well. Other notes: That Jim Henson funeral thing. I've seen it before. So bittersweet, esp. when Big Bird says, "Thank you, Kermit" at the end! Awww

Tip for your next trip to the states - Henson donated a lot of the puppets and props to Atlanta’s museum of puppetry arts. They have muppets galore and even characters from dark crystal and labyrinth on display

I watched Sesame Street when I was a kid (nearly half a century ago) and I watched it right up through to my youngest daughter too. (she was born in 1990) But now that she is about to turn 30 (and I still haven't been made a Grandpa yet) I never watched Jim Henson's funeral until you show it to me here, and yes I teared up too. I blame you for making me get all weepy though I'd probably would have anyways.

I so cried with you during the Tribute to Jim Henson. My Mom used to watch the Muppets with me as that was a more adult show and my Dad would watch Sesame Street with me. I remember loving all of it! Most of all Kermit. I even did a speech about him in Speech class in high school but what made me love him was that he was compassionate and understood what it was like to be a little different from others. The song “ It’s Not Easy Being Green” means a lot. I was bullied a lot in school and just felt like I didn’t always fit in my Mom would sing that song to me. I even have a cute little coffee table book about how it’s not easy being green. Being a little different from your class mates or whoever isn’t easy but when you learn to embrace your uniqueness other people start to embrace it as well. It’s a great lesson. 💚💚💚 honestly everyone. Stay weird, be a little mad lol. All the best people are.
