Irish Guards | The Minstrel Boy
This is a small tribute I put together for the Irish Guards
Brief opening tune: British Grenadiers March
Irish Guards recruiting:
www.army.mod.uk...
The Irish Guards (IG), part of the Guards Division, is one of the Foot Guards Regiments of the British Army. Along with The Royal Irish Regiment, it is one of the two Irish regiments remaining in the British Army.
One way to distinguish between the five regiments of Foot Guards is the spacing of the buttons on their tunics. The Irish Guards have buttons arranged in groups of four as they were the fourth Foot Guards regiment to be founded. They also have a prominent St. Patrick's blue plume on the right side of their bearskins.

An odd but undeniable part of Irish history. The song and regiment stand in juxtaposition to each other.

I don't think its odd, there is a long tradition and history in Ireland of soldiering and the Irish Guards is just one of a handful of Irish or partly Irish regiments in the Army. The Minstrel boy is not as far as I am aware considered to be a nationalist song and even if it was, the British Army tends to use such to encourage regional and regimental identity. The Welsh Guards slow march for example is Men of Harlech a song about beating the saxons (aka the English) in battle, and the march of Royal Scots Borderers (1Scots) is All the Blue Bonnets are o'er the border, a song about Scottish border clans raiding England.

@@Sammy1234568910 My grandfather and his brothers marched and fought with the 18th of Foot (The Royal Irish) in South Africa and Mons. They if alive would find this amusing I am sure. They on their off times in South Tipperary used to sing other rebel songs rather than this even though they were serving soldiers. I think maybe their other brothers did also though they served in the Munsters and the QOH and the Dubs in WW1.

@@Sammy1234568910 I think he is commenting that this is preformed by an English army band when it was written to honor those that died fighting English tyranny in the name of a free and independent Ireland

@@jordanhicks5131 That sentiment's certainly been clouded by more recent events, considering the most recent armed 'struggle' in NI killed more innocents than tyrants

Yes this song was written as a very poignant tribute to Irish Nationalism of wars in times long gone by. It is used by the Irish Guards as a tribute to the men who serve and their cultural heritage. That is why Irish Guards were created - in recognition of the bravery of many Irishmen in service of Great Britain. You can disagree with their choice to do so if you like, but they have my respect.

The picture at 0:56 is of a piper of the Royal Irish Fusiliers in WW2, which is an antecedent regiment of the Royal Irish Regiment not the Irish Guards (the Royal Irish and the Irish Guards have friendly rivalry)
