Jerky is dried meat while pemmican is dried meat with other ingredients such as berries. Before refrigeration, Native Americans and pioneers used pemmican as a survival food.

Jerky is just strips of dehydrated/dried meat that can have flavoring coated on it or that has been marinated. The moisture content in jerky doesn't give it as long of a shelf life or storage life. The dried meat in Pemmican is very dry jerky that has been beaten or ground into a powder and then mixed together with Tallow (animal fat) in 1 to 1 equal parts of meat to fat, and it can have berries and/or honey added for flavor. Pemmican can last 3 - 5 years in storage when made properly because the low moisture content doesn't allow bacteria to grow in it.

If you go to Buc-ee's again go to the meat counter and you can get samples of every single jerky they have so that you can try it to see if you like the flavor before you buy a bag of it, or buy it by the pound. You can also sample all of their cooked Ring Meats (the long sausages and Brats that look like a long curve or ring). Then go to the Fudge counter and you can sample all the flavors of fudge to see what you like, and then go to the sandwich counter and get a sample of their BBQ, Brisket, Turkey, etc that they're putting on the sandwiches! You'll practically be full before you even buy anything to take with you! LOL! They also make great club sandwiches that will be made with Turkey, Bacon, and swiss cheese, or Turkey, Ham, Bacon, Jalapeño Jack cheese, and a spicey sweet Mayo, or Turkey, Ham Brisket and a BBQ sauce. Sometines they label them as a Triple Decker and all variations are good!
