My foreigner husband thought I was crazy when I insisted that we needed to stop at Buc-ees on our way to San Antonio. Two hours later he’d tried on cowboy hats, sampled his way through all the beef jerky (and bought several pounds), bought several magnets for family members and looked at all the kitschy clothing and home decor. Now it’s a regular stop on all our road trips for the coffee and bathrooms (yes, they’re that nice!!).

I’m a native Texan so I’ve seen my fair share of Bucees. My family stopped at one last week after a quiet week on the beach and I was NOT READY. Nothing prepares you for the sheer chaos. It truly is the Disneyland of gas stations. The building was packed to the brim with people gazing out at the sites like tourists, children were roving in packs, and trying to order kolaches was a harrowing experience. If you’re visiting Bucees for the first time, go BEFORE you decompress because your stop will definitely put you into fight or flight mode.

The famously clean restrooms, beef jerky, nuggets, brisket (a staple of Texas barbecue), well over 75 gas pumps in most locations, home decor, novelty items, and unique clothing can all be found there. I have a friend that worked at a Buc-ee's years back, after Hurricane Ike, Buc-ee's and the liquor store were the ONLY and first two things to open in their town. It literally was WalMart for a couple of days while more power was getting restored. She worked like 18 hrs straight when it first opened, it was pretty insane. Want to say it was her and another gal and the manager to cover all 24 hrs, that was IT, and trying to make what they had in the store last while the mgr was working on getting trucks in with some goods/gas. Anybody from the area knows Mack is the embodiment of H-town ❤. He came from humble beginnings and doesn't mind giving back in time and money both, realizing it was the city that made him the business success he is today.

That sums up a Buc-ee's. Good food, good merchandise, and definitely a stop to help you stretch on those long drives. Also, they are not kidding about both cleanliness of the restrooms and the size either. The only way you will ever see a line at a Buc-ee's restroom is if there are about 3 or 4 buses outside as well as the usual customers. Ok, it might be a slight exaggeration, emphasis on the word slight. And finally, as a food reviewer on KZbin going by the handle of Strictly Dumpling said, it has better BBQ than you would find in New York City. Yeah, I know it isn't a high bar to clear, but it is still funny a Texas gas station can beat any BBQ place in New York City.

I live 2 exits past the one in Leeds and I always go there. The secret as a local is to go before or after the rush. The rush lasts about 22 hours, so you have a limited time, but it is worth it. Also, learn the back roads to get there, and never try to go there from the interstate.
@Dawn_Hannah2 жыл бұрын
We live in Memphis and the Leeds location is (sadly) currently the closest to us, so anytime we’re heading that direction we have to stop! We have found that late night is the best time to visit, as you can just drive right off the interstate and park near the front door - one night we got to our hotel late and went to grab a bite at Buc-ee’s at 130am and *almost* had the whole place to ourselves! 🤩

We were in awe when they built one here in St. Augustine, Florida. So many pumps. So much to see. And it's a decor and clothing store inside?! 🤯 I still get a little mental giggle when I see the "Potty like a rock star" billboards. The bathrooms are spotless and the food is so good for a gas station. You can also get knock-off Rae Dunn dishes for twice the price while you fight through crowds of customers, and weirdly textured eggs in their breakfast offerings, so you definitely get a mixed bag when you visit the place. 😆

Keep going back to this video. Hilarious!!! If anyone is planning on going to Bucc-ees and haven't been there before there are a few things I recommend: 1. Have fun experimenting with different Bucc-ees brand fountain drink sodas. I was pleasantly surprised! 2. Try the club sandwich, it's wonderful! If too spicy, get some mayo packets to tone it down. 3. Don't be afraid to ask to sample some fudge. They do that here, plus it helps you decide what to buy! 4. If getting a pudding I recommend the small size. There's the same amount of whipped topping on top as the large, so it goes further with the small. 5. Don't go on a weekend or Friday night because the crowd is a nightmare. Do research on Google of the slow times so you can have a more easy going experience. Some other items I really think are tasty and recommend: frosted cinnamon roll, birthday cake whoopie pie, sausage kolache, raspberry flavored yogurt pretzels, milk chocolate crispy rice Overbite, Assorted Sours, Blueberry Cheesecake Fudge, White Cheddar Nug-gees, and chocolate chip cookie dough bites. Have fun and stay safe!!!

We were at a church in KY that had a Christian school. They’d just gotten a Buc-ee’s in their area and that’s where they took the kids for a field trip. 😂 They took us along, too, and we had a great time comparing and sharing everything we’d bought on the ride home. Side note: if you love chocolate and peanut butter, get an Overbite!!! It’s usually at the registers (if they’re not sold out). Best thing they have, no joke. We get it every time.
