If it's real absinthe, but I doubt this is the real stuff. The usual stuff you buy in stores is way sweeter and can be drunk by itself (although it's still very strong).

French, Spanish and Swiss absinthes still have decent thujon (Psychoactive ingredient of Wormwood) levels while the more ubiquitous Czech ones have extremely low amounts to allow for international sale. Your mileage may vary heavily.

Real psychoactive Absinthe is no longer banned in the USA, I've got some in my bar, classic presentation is Absinthe in glass with strainer spoon over top with a sugar cube, this is placed under an Absinthe (cold water) fountain and water trickles over melting the sugar, then drink,it is 155 proof so don't be surprised if you get hammered easily. Drink two or three and the legendary "Green Fairy"the psychoactive wormwood extract kicks in. You'll understand Impressionist art better when the mind altering component starts to make everything look like Monet has control of your focus. The Pernod isn't as strong and is a refreshing drink with ice and, cold water. Never have I seen either downed as a straight shot in France. If anise flavor isn't your thing these are not for you, they aren't cheap either, Pernod $35. and Absinthe $65. in my state, I'm sure this is somewhat variable. i

iroam maori Absinthe never had any psychoactive properties, that rumor was created by wine makers after Absinthe nearly replaced wine as the most popular drink in France. After a guy who had practically inhaled alcohol all day came home, had a glass of absinthe and murdered his family wine makers started claiming absinthe rotted his brain and made him do it, and they started the scare of "absinthism".

There are many ways to do it, but if I remember correctly, we poured some absinthe, then, with a little support for the sugarcube, your pour slowly some pure water on the cube to melt it. Usually, for 1 of absinthe, it's around 3-4 of water. Depend on how you like it. Some do it without or very little water

Absinthe should be diluted with ice cold water and sugar to taste (it's a non sweetened alcohol), many recommend it to be diluted down to around 14% alcohol "like wine". And that looked like a shit absinthe to begin with. Pernod (and Richard) should also be diluted, just as Absinthe. It's already sweet though, and they lack wormwood. I just hope that the wine was proper chilled to around 16-18 degrees C.

In the past, cheap absinthe (Absinte was cheaper than cheap wine) often had abnormal amount of methanol in it. Methanol is a neurotoxic alcohol which basically turn you into a crazy beast if you consumle too much of it. Van gogh the dutch painter is famous for cutting his own ear while being drunk on absinthe. In France it was banned for most of the 20th century. Nowadays, even the cheapest absinte you will find, will not contain an once of methanol so it's relatively safe on that regard. But it's still a 80° alcohol, so yeah it's strong as fuck, and that's why you're not supposed to drink shots like they did.

You take a wine glass, put a shot of absinthe in the bottom, slowly drip ice water over a sugar cube into the glass, dilute the absinthe as much as you'd like, & enjoy. Stir often to keep the sugar from settling to the bottom. The taste reminds me of a black spice drop candy.

Who takes shots of absinthe? It's supposed to be drunk in a certain way. It's quite delicious and pretty (the water/alcohol changes colors) when you use the sugar with spoon and water fountains. Absinthe was used by the French army to sterilize water with alcohol. To make them take shots of absinthe shows a lack of class and definite cruelty towards their coworkers by the producer.
