The video wasn't called popular american foods, it's called weird american foods. I have never seen canned cheddar cheese but cheddar is about as american as it gets. Soaking pickles in Kool-Aid, yeah only an american could come up with that. Ambrosia salad is actually somewhat popular in the south. But peanut butter and mayo? Nah man, that's like some French wartime survival food or something.
@jasonpatterson80917 жыл бұрын
wingracer 16 Um, cheddar is British. Exceedingly British. It's named after Cheddar, in England. Kraft singles American cheese is about as American as it gets. If they had given these folks a block of Velveeta or something maybe.

'The rest eew wtf' implies white cheddar is repulsive to you lol. The tin doesnt affect its taste at all. A bit of history on Cougar Gold cheese--it was invented in the 1930s, when there was a national milk surplus. Researchers at the University of Washington invented a cheddar cheese that could be canned, and thus the surplus milk didn't go to waste. In WWII they also found it was one of the few cheeses that didnt spoil during transport.
@Izabella287 жыл бұрын
sergeantbigmac I should have clarified that. The eww wtf was pretty much mainly for the mayo and peanut butter and pickles with Kool-Aid. And thank you I never knew about that with the canned cheese. They did say in the video it tasted good. I would love to try only that.

Cougar Gold is an American Cheddar cheese produced at the Washington State University Creamery in Pullman, Washington. Like other cheeses sold at the creamery, Cougar Gold is notable for being sold exclusively in 30oz tin cans. In 1993, the American Cheese Society awarded Cougar Gold with a blue ribbon, and in 1995, the cheese earned the United States Cheese Champion silver medal. Cougar Gold later received a silver medal at the 2000 World Cheese Awards and a gold medal at the 2006 World Cheese Awards.

Jason Tavares lots of weird food combos come from times of war and rationing, when people were poor and had to make do with whatever they could get their hands on. But I definitely know what you mean.

Unfortunately, I don't think that explains the Kool-Aid pickles. That's doubling up on ingredients, not conserving them. Also, wasn't sugar rationed pretty heavily? I do seem to remember Ambrosia being in 1950s-era cookbooks though, along with all those disturbing Jello molds.
