The superstition about not whistling in a theater is based in reality: Back in they day they'd often hire sailors as stagehands, and the way they'd communicate across stage was by whistling to each other. Hence randomly whistling might inadvertently cue someone to bring scenery down on top of your head. Similarly "break a leg" for good luck isn't wishing injury - a "leg" is a side curtain in the theater. During bows/curtain calls if the audience loved it and keeps clapping after the curtain comes down they'll raise the curtain so the company can bow again, often raising and lowering it multiple times based on audience enthusiasm. The idea is you're wishing the performance is well-received enough that you'll cause them to "break a leg" by raising and lowering the curtain so many times. (Usually in a metaphorical sense as many shows don't use curtains, but I assume it's probably happened at some point in history "The performance was so good with so many curtain calls one of the leg mechanisms broke! It's the performers' fault for getting so many ovations!!" and it stuck as a unique way to wish good luck.)
@izzymhee2430 Жыл бұрын
As an actor, if you whistle on stage or in the wings or dressing rooms you're supposed to immediately go outside, turn around three times, spit and say a curse word to bring back the luck before you can step on the stage again.
@jamigrey5554 Жыл бұрын
Many, many years ago, if you did not go past the leg you didn't get paid. Hence the break a leg was basically hope you get paid!
@kendalgraves551 Жыл бұрын
What I heard is breaking a leg was a rather backhanded way to wish an understudy was take over a role. The primary actor, for whatever reason, couldn’t perform, and the understudy would then be ‘in a cast’.

I'm an old American guy 75 actually. Anyhow my ears really perked up when Grainne began singing songs from My Fair Lady. When I was in 8th grade back in the very early 60s, my English teacher took us on a field trip to watch My Fair Lady at a theater, the version staring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. The music has stuck with me all these years. It have a VHS tape of it that I still watch. I've introduced by children and grandchildren to that movie and music.

I'm only 15 years younger. Growing up in Sacramento, we always went to see the Music Circus a few times every summer. When I was 16, I got to go to Europe with a small group of students from my High School and saw Yul Brynner do The King and I at the London Palladium. That summer of '79 is still my favorite of all time. Five weeks in Europe for less than $1k...including spending money.
