It’s physically impossible to get over 96% of alcohol in room conditions. You can of course cross this number in lab however as alcohol is highly hygroscopic (that’s also why you feel dry on a hangover or can get throat burn) and as soon as you will open the bootle in the room it will absorb humidity from the air and will stable at 96%.

You feel dry on a hangover because you're dehydrated, because alcohol is a diuretic. Alcoholic drinks aren't anywhere near as hygroscopic as anhydrous ethanol and the alcohol consumed wouldn't absorb nearly enough water to cause dehydration. You can reduce the severity of the hangover by preventing dehydration, by drinking lots of water.

@@btnhstillfire Gatorade is great for preventing and treating hangovers, and what I'd probably use given the choice, but yes, water does rehydrate you. You just might need to drink a bit more of it. There are circumstances where drinking too much water will dilute your electrolytes to the point where it's dangerous, but that's really extreme circumstances like when you're running a marathon. A couple glasses of water after one-too-many pints is still a good idea.

I've used absolute (100%) alcohol in many industrial applications. The old fashioned Imperial proof was 184 degrees, commonly referred to as '84 OP'. It would eventually dilute by absorbing atmospheric moisture, but this is a fairly slow process and didn't affect its everyday use. Ireland used the old Imperial system, before adopting the ABV, so the spirit should have been described as 175 proof. 190 proof is the American system, never used in Ireland sfaik.

@@robertcollett8073 Everclear also has 95% version, but Spirytus is not used as a drink here in Poland, we use it as an ingredient, mostly to make "nalewka" which is a type of liquor made by infusing fruits, herbs or spices with strong alcohol. So if you will find 95% Everclear or Spirytus, I do recommend to maybe drink half of the shot to find out how disgusting it is, and pour the rest into a jar, add some mashed fruits like berries, some sugar (in 1:1:0.5 ratio), and let it sit for 2-3 weeks, then filter it and keep in a jar for at least few more weeks, the longer it will mature the less boozy it will taste. Good, few years old nalewka can have 70% of alcohol and it may taste like 30% or less, so it is definitely a tricky thing.

Guy from Poland here. Regarding the last drink 'Spirytus Rektyfikowany' we don't drink it. It's easy to overdrink and you can die from it. I'm not talking about some alkoholics etc. We mainly use it to make homemade liqueurs and then they are later diluted with vodka or water. Some herbs or fruits better 'dissolve' their vitamins in high proof alcohol while some need low proof alcohol. That's the only reason why it's easy to buy it in Poland.

There is a special method to do this: you draw in a lot of air and drink while you inhale and exhale deeply, otherwise the alcohol vapour will burn your lungs and you would have difficulty breathing for a long time. What they are doing is stupid and potentially harmful because someone might suggest that movie and hurt themselves !!! this whole movie is one big scam. I know what I am saying, I am writing from Poland and I have often drunk high-percentage alcohol, including pure spirit. Above 60 percent, neither of them was drinking anything !!! Cheaters.

You can't distill much higher than about 96% without using a chemical "drying agent" afterwards to drive out the remaining few droplets of water. You probably don't want to be drinking that... or do, I'm not your doctor. I suspect on 99.99% it has "in case of ingestion consult a mortician" on the label.

My uncle Mick, may he rest in piece, used to make the poitín (potcheen) at around 175 proof but he used to water it before sale down to 50% ABV, which made it a far nicer drink. You'd never exactly describe it as smooth but no-one ever went blind and people came back for another bottle every time.
