I'm thinking Paddy's childhood was "eat what was prepared or go hungry" .... or a childhood of low class and only the disgusting foods is what they had $$ for. 😮 Or like Ciara, siblings who for chuckles would force him to eat dirt, grass clippings, moss, etc.. In one video Ciara says her older siblings had Ciara eating dirt/soil.

Perhaps "Doctor Moo" originated from the TV show, "Fringe". Walter had a beloved cow in his lab throughout the show. Maybe all the time the cow spent in the lab, with the various experiments that Walter conducted, including traveling between parallel worlds and altered timelines, the cow experienced a genetic change that led to them being able to travel through time and space.

I found the sweet pickled watermelon rind funny since I grew up with watermelon rind preserves made by my grandma, she was old school nothing got away critter of veggie except the squeal the rest was put to use. One has to remember before referigation pickling was a common way to preserve foods for winter and hard times. That said while I did enjoy the chuckles watching the gang endure this Try, I did feel sorry for them and yes Dermot I'm right there with you if it tastes nasty to me I'm spitting that kaka out.

Let's take a moment to appreciate: 1) Dermot's willingness to give his all for a Try video. He's such a genuine good sport; and 2) The fact that not one, but two of the Try Channel owners subjected themselves to these pickled delights. How, exactly, did Kelly avoid being in this video? When my son was growing up, I used to make pickled venison heart. I recently mentioned to him that next deer hunting season, I want him to save the heart for me. His response was a look of absolute horror. Apparently, he despised the smell of the hearts cooking overnight to tenderize them. There we go - back to The Schadenfreude Channel. We are entertained. Veteran Bla giving Laura thrive and survive tips was a sweet moment, but "Dr. Moo" pretty much did me in. Well endured everyone, and thanks for your hilarious suffering once again!

I love these guys and their intrepid journeys into gastronomic black holes. My grandmother used to gather all the rinds when we had a family picnic to make her watermelon pickles that we would enjoy at Thanksgiving and Christmas along with pickled sickel pears. And of course there was pickled red cabbage paired with sauerbratten.

The red cabbage one is like typical food here that everyone (even kids) loves. With a nice meatball, some potato's apple sauce you can wake me up any day.

This is my childhood, right here. We grew up in the forest and around a lot of farms. This stuff was so common that no one thought it was odd. Venison is big in our area, so pickled deer heart was made by my gran every year for ages and ages, usually for the Xmas eve get-together. Thing about pickled food is that you don't usually eat it alone. All the picklers/fermenters from Europe almost always mixed in a fruit of some kind to take off the bite of the sour. Unless, like me, you're totally into it. Polish dill pickles are the best I've ever had. I can devour a kilo of them and not even get up. But bigos, the Polish hunter stew, usually calls for dried prunes. Germans mix apples and sauerkraut. Just about any dried fruit is used for this. The meats were always meant to go into stews and soups more than eaten plainly, but we all got into just about pickled anything. Eggs, all the pig stuff, turkey, sausages, peppers, green beans, onions, garlic, cauliflower, tomatoes, etc. It was more common to see beetroot pickling where I'm from than straight vinegar, which is why some of the pickling brine is red.

As someone who frequents Dietrich's Meats I gotta say the only pickled meat I would eat is tripe. They have best cold smoked meats around. And the best scrapple. But they’re definitely more geared towards the PA Dutch/German crowd and proud of it.

just for the record, the pork rinds should've been fried in some way to make them palatable. either in a skillet like fajita meat, or deep fried like, well, a pork rind from the chip/crisp aisle.
