Born in US, but I spoke only Greek until I went to school. Also went to Greek school so I am proficient in Greek. When I went to college the requirement was having a second language. I went to the Dean and explained, in perfect English, that I had a second language: English. That surprised him but he recovered and said then I needed to take a proficiency test in my first language, Greek, to meet the second language requirement. So I did. Easiest exam I ever took.

My duties included maintaining hard copy folders/records for the counselors to use in their appointments with students. In checking for completeness, I had to ensure their quarterly grade reports were update to date. For foreign students, I was bemused to note that they were automatically credited with 2 years of their native language with straight "A"s. Sure helped their GPA. Black. African. Came to the US when I was 20. Grew up speaking English. And had the same exact situation when I tried to sign up for college. This entire conversation (paraphrased) *was in English.* Her: so you're going to have to take a ESL. Me (my stepdad was a university professor here, so I knew what ESL was): uh, no I don't. Her: When you come from a foreign country you have to take ESL, it's a requirement so that people who don't natively speak English can learn the language and improve their understanding of all the other subjects. Me: First of all, English is not my second language, it's my fifth, and I probably speak it better than you do. Second. Do you see the high school certificate in front of you. There is an A there for English. Do you see that there is also an A for English Literature. In fact, for all nine subjects on that certificate, in which I passed all of them, I was tested in English. Additionally, I have Pitman's certificates including one for Business English. I will not be taking English as a Second Language when i've only ever had As in English since 3rd grade. (2nd grade my brother and I (twins) were not proficient in English. We only did 2nd grade for one term and were promoted to 3rd grade the next term, and were were caught up on English by the end of the year.) Her: Um, uh ... ok. You're going to have to take a test. In every single one, the majority of the students were people who already spoke that language at home. They were taking the class for the easiest possible credit. Given that these were always immersion classes, all they had to do was go to class and speak the language they would have been speaking at home anyway. The German class was full of German speakers. The Spanish class was full of Spanish speakers. The Japanese class was full of Japanese speakers. And on and on and on.

This gentleman is awesome. One of my first supervisors was Laotian. He was very serious, but he always worked hard and I appreciated his example. He also has a very long last name. I still remember it, but don't want to share out of respect for privacy.

yes, i see a lot of that. i’m from a neighbouring country that also got bombed by Americans (for no reason- truly, we were just some neutral countries that neighbour Vietnam) Took my parents years to loosen up after assimilating in the west- but yes- hardest workers i know. i totally get it and appreciate this comment!

@04:26 Funny as hell. I worked in a company were we had a Thai guy, our username was like 1st letter of 1st name followed by last name. We tried to put that in and it was too long;
