Back in 70s when traffic was non existent (almost) they would throw over bends in roads and you would suddenly have a cannonball descend out of nowhere and bounce towards you. Had that happen once while in parents car and ball bounced and skipped under the car banging loudly as it did. No health and safety in 70s. At school we played Hurling with no safety gear of any form. I won’t go in to details of stuff we did in chemistry at school .. no goggles, no masks, no gloves etc etc. This was from area I lived in Durrus is nearby where I visited regularly. I lived between Bantry and Clonakilty.

It's not illegal, you just need permission from the garda if it takes place on public roads. Also there is usually a police presence even at planned events because there can be feuds between families

There is a set course and which ever of the two competitors completes it in the shortest number of throws wins. They take their first throw from the same point and take all subsequent throws from where their last one stopped.

@@CalgarianMike That's right, and if there is a tie on the number of throws it is who ever throws their final throw furthest beyond the finish line who wins. There are two techniques, in Armagh they don't swing it around like they do here in the Cork style.
