Today, Dubliners hear songs in the Welsh language only at rugby games, but a century ago the singing of Welsh hymns could be heard every Sunday morning on Talbot Street...

Hello from Holyhead: I greatly enjoyed your video. As late as the 1920’s and 30’s the 5/6 Calvinistic Methodist ministers at Holyhead would each cross over, once or twice a year, to take services at the chapel at Talbot Street. My grandfather was one of them, and for instance, his Sunday engagement diary shows that in 1935 he was in Dublin on 23 June and 22 September. The presence of these minister’s enabled preaching and the administration of the Lord’s Supper to take place fairly often. Diolch am adrodd hanes y capel bach.

The current state of that building is a disgrace.

Thanks, I found your video really interesting. I knew the building was a former chapel but nothing of it's history.

Thanks for doing this video. It is amazing to find out about what went on in Dublin in the 19th century. I would be interested in learning more about the Dutch-speaking Lutherans (who were a tiny minority in their own land). I know about this church, but I always found it a bit odd in that Methodism and Calvinism do not go together well. Something had to give of one or both or am I missing something?

St David’s College? Wasn’t it mainly a theological college? Certainly no faculties of medicine, engineering, etc. For those subjects a trip to Dublin made sense!

I am wondering about temperance on board a British ship? Were not sailors almost obliged to drink their dram? Was it not a way of preventing scurvy and a good source of some otherwise missing minerals? Would not captains promoted the taking of at least a bit every day?
