9:53: final mayday call from the MS Estonia
The MS Estonia was a cruiseferry built in 1980 for the Finnish company Rederi Ab Sally by Meyer Werft, in Papenburg, West Germany. She was employed on ferry routes between Finland and Sweden by various companies (first Viking Line, then EffJohn) until 1993, when she was sold to Nordström & Thulin for use on Estline's Tallinn-Stockholm route. The ship's sinking on 28 September 1994, in the Baltic Sea between Sweden, Finland and Estonia, was one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters of the 20th century, claiming 852 lives, In this video I take a look at the conspiracy surrounding her sinking.

Right I always seem to come back to it, I just can't stop thinking about what actually happened. Firstly what the passangers when through it seems like the worst terror I could ever imagined (I suppose it feels extra scary and close because I have travelled in similar ferries) and then of course what did actually happen and why all the secrets like why didn't they take up all the bodies, to get a better picture of what actually happened to them and because majority of people wanted their loved ones back home and bury them.

As a Swede I cannot begin to describe how deeply this disaster hit our country. (And tbh I'm quite dissapointed how little it is covered outside of the affected countries, few modern sinkings can really compare.) For example; I was 7 years old when this happened. Two major things happened that year. One was the sinking of Estonia. The other was the worst (and probably only) mass shooting in the history of Sweden. One of those things happened in my hometown, while I was sleeping in my bed 10 minutes away. I have no memory of this. I do, however, remember the look on my mothers face when she told me about Estonia. I remember going to school that day and everyone crying. I remember trying to grasp with my childish mind how so many people could die in such a short time. I remember it like the trauma it was, despite not even knowing anyone aboard. I've seen many tragedies in my life. I've seen the tsunami. I've seen the world trade center. And I've seen wars and ethnic cleanings. And although they are obviously far worse, nothing has stuck with me like this memory. Because for a 7 year old little girl seeing your whole country this traumatized... It sticks. And I hope that one day the truth will come out and the victims will get peace. Because the memory of realizing that your government that you fully trusted were lying about this the whole time. The memory of loosing that trust. That memory is almost just as horrible.

Western media/propaganda is always making Russia the bad guy. However the German reporters found out that a swedish submarine was damaged almost beyond reparation and was taken to a salvage dock just 2 weeks after the incident and was under reparation for atleast 3 months. Makes me wonder if the heavy seas supriced the swedish submarine in watch as Estonia dig deeper into waves than normal and therefore caused a collasion...? Sweden has only confirmed the docking but nothing about the damage or the cause that made them.

- in 1990-1991, Estonia went by the name Silja Star, where my father worked - Silja Star drove "too hard" in the waves, the bow gate was damaged and water flooded the car deck "almost up to the knees" - the ship had to be repaired at the shipyard for about a month, my father also got extra paid leave - note that this happened 3-4 years before the sinking of the ship in question! - at that time, the staff often passed through the car deck, so everyone knew about it - documents, interviews, experts claim that there was never a fault/problem with the bow gate before - most parties claim that in 1994, this bow port thing came as a complete surprise - it is 100% certain that Silja Star's temporary removal of traffic and the repair of the bow gate is documented - are there similar documents already from the time of Viking Sally (same ship), I don't know, since it hasn't been clarified - enormous resources have been used to search for the fault and the cause, even though the matter has been known to everyone - many high-level people have presented even wild theories as to the cause of the sinking - is it not really understood that the same, known fault, has been repeated several times? - The staff of Silja Star was never interviewed, neither before nor after the disaster in Estonia - the ship sailed as Viking Sally from 1980-90, the staff were never interviewed, to find out the origin of the leak - An interview with Sally's people would have either solved the matter, or moved the investigation in the direction of Silja Star's staff - neither of the above happened - every worker could have told if there was water on deck or not, and if so, how often/how much - 1 public figure has voluntarily told, while working on Sally, that there were problems with the bow gate

Toki olen saanu paskaa asiakaspalvelua viking linellakin.

There were many instsnces of bow visor failures in the 80s and 90s, including on Diana II in 1993.(her visor+ramp configuration was exactly the same as Estonia/Viking Sally.) These are documented in the JAIC report and also in the Meyer Werft report(usually calked GGE report) There is no cover up and no reason to doubt the official finding of the cause of the accident. The theories about submarines and bombs are ludicrous and unrealistic. What I would change in the official report is the blame, which should be on 1. RAB Sally and Estline, for ordering and purchasing a vessel they knew did not fulfill SOLAS rules. Estline also neglected repairs and did not promote the right safety culture 2. The Finnish and Estonian authorities for certifying the ship when it did not fulfill the criteria 3 Meyer Werft for building a vessel without the required collision bulkhead.

Wonderfully presented. I don't think I've seen a video in English before that discusses the conspiracy theories as well. I hope the new investigations manage to be more transparent and bring us a conclusion that the survivors and the family members can accept as truthful. Even though I don't believe in conspiracy theories, I do find them interesting. I think the original investigation and government reactions only fulled them. Like not wanting to do any recovery, trying to cover the ship in concrete, preventing any divings, and not admitting to the weapons trasportation until ten years later. And then the new discovery of a hole on the hull. No wonder people don't trust the original accident report.

M/S Estonias sinking is a tragedy, but why is simple! The receipt is the combination of RoRo ships open cargo decks, free surface effect, sloppy fixation of bigger vehicles on car deck and a old ferry ship driven way to hard in that extreme weather. I was awakened that night in central Stockholm because of the hard wind and rain battering my windows on second floor as never before and never after that night.

All this never ending speculation is cause JAIC was too subtle towards the Estonian shipping company. It's in the final raport but they didn't point it out. Ship should have been send to repair dock for visir and ramp repairs long time before sinking. They had had problems with the visor and ramp locks and watertightness long before the sinking.

Case of captain Piht. All started from small Estonian news paper what told he was alive. Lot of bigger media outlets share this same info but shortly removed it because it turned out to be false. This is how consipiracy theory starts. I did my study years ago and this is what i found. The story goes that Piht was brought to Utö with the first survivors. That can't be true because the first rescued people were transported to car ferries, of which there were already several. Wikipedia also says that "the information was confirmed by a Swedish helicopter pilot." It is the Swedish Navy's helicopter Y-64 and its surface rescuer Kenneth Svensson. According to him, he has never recognized Pihti and the claim in question is the reason for early and hasty press reports. That's how the legend began to live. According to another website, Piht's wife had received "official information" from the Swedish authorities that, "Avo Piht was taken aboard the rescue helicopter Q97 on the night of September 28, and was delivered in full strength at 4:20 a.m. to Finland to the island of Utö." According to the carefully documented accident report, the Swedish Super Puma helicopter Q 97 took off from Visby, Gotland at 2:50 a.m. and arrived one hour later, i.e. at 3:50 a.m., at the accident site, picked up 6 people (none of them was Avo Piht) from two overturned lifeboats and flew them to Utö, where the helicopter arrived at 5:00 a.m. . In this case, the timestamps do not match.

Listening to this SOS call on the radio, comes the impression that navigation in the mid-90s was at stone age levels - why couldn’t other large ships see such a large ship as Estonia on their radar? Or is the whole point that the power on the Estonia already turned off and along with it the positioning transmitter stopped working?
@Tuppoo94
@Tuppoo94 9 ай бұрын
The idea that the supposedly air-filled sections of Estonia below the car deck would've been enough to keep the 15000-tonne ship afloat is preposterous. The ship was upside down, many cabin windows had been broken by the waves, and water was rushing in through the open car deck ramp. Estonia sank stern first, like an upright glass being placed into a deep kitchen sink full of water. I do agree that the investigative authorities handled communications poorly, which lead to the disaster becoming a hotbed of conspiracy theories.
