Niamh, thank you so much for these videos. I started to learn as an adult about 15 years ago and then gave it up for about 15 years!! I'm recently back at it now and all these little tips are brilliant and are definitely going to make me a more confident player. You are so clear in your instructions. Thanks again.

I love these little tips to help remember the different rhythms . But if “rashers-and-sausages” is a jig and “black-and-decker” is a reel, what type of tune would “four-and-twenty-blackbirds” be?

Hi brilliant video, so clear and easy to follow. Am going to start the fiddle myself and join in with my kids as they learn but what type would you recommend for me? I'm in Ireland, thanks!

Suzuki Method - Strawberries and ice cream! So far the first 4 lessons seem to be based on Suzuki Method of Violin playing. What is the REAL difference when it comes to Scottish and Irish fiddle playing?

Am a beginner and I know not how to read music, does this mean i have a long way to get into correct tunes?

Hi Anna, You don't need to read music to play Irish music. Traditionally it is learned by ear with the help of simple ABC notation. Have you been following these lessons?

should i also be memorizing the notes? like when i play an e string, should i be thinking, e?

Hi Elizabeth, Thanks for the question :) You should be training your ear to know when you are playing the correct note or not. Lot's of deliberate slow practice will get your playing up to speed. Have you started to practice the bowing patterns?

i play the piano, so i know by ear when i'm playing the note that sounds right. i just wondered if i should be memorizing where the E is, where the f# is, etc. so far, i'm thinking, 4th finger, 3rd finger, etc. i know the GDAE strings (Good Dogs Are Excellent. lol). bowing--yes, and i think it's going pretty well, especially since this is my first time going this far with a stringed instrument!!! LOVE your lessons!!! very do-able!!!

in watching the 6th lesson, i answered my own question, that yes, i need to be memorizing the note i'm playing, rather than just the finger used. so instead of thinking "4 and 20 blackbirds," i'm thinking, D D D D D D, A A A A A A...," etc. lol.
