You probably have one of the most interesting limited palettes that I've ever seen. It seems a lot of people agonize over which "cool tone red" or "warm tone blue" to pick for a split primary palette but there is so much interest and personality when you know what colors you like and what you like to paint with them. I really appreciate and respect this approach to art. I wish more people understood that while knowing the technical stuff is VERY important so you can make correct/deliberate choices, art doesn't stop at technical.

Agree with every word! Not only that, but a signature color palette is one step in gaining a recognizable style which is very important if one wants to stand out and create unique art😀

I love this limited palette! It definitely feels very you 🥰 I fully agree on making a small palette feel personal instead of trying to make it like someone else's.

@@iritlandgraf I have a very old version for a standard mixing arrangement and the Brand by Brand palettes, but this video has really inspired me! I've been jotting down notes about how I could add to this discussion (referencing this video of course!), so I'm very excited to have your go-ahead on that idea 🥰

Thank you for sharing your palette. Just before watching (literally minutes before) I finished rearranging my palette so I could cram in even more colors! 21 full pans and all the wells are full. Your perspective always makes me feel okay with my color choices, even if they don't align with conventional wisdom.

LOVE LOVE this video Irit. You hit it on the head. A limited palette is incredibly personal. We all have our mixing/color preferences, so one size doesn’t fit all. I love how you explained why you made specific choices for your limited palette and how they fit into your artistic style. I’ve been working on a summer themed palette based around my artistic style and it is so fun to test and create custom palettes with your watercolors. Plus, swatching and mixing are like my therapy haha.

I never take notice of numbers or names or any color info as I’m the type of artist who uses color as a tool and not a specific so when a color of paint or pencil is gone: it’s gone and on to the next new exciting color😁

Hello Irit…great video…. I know (I just know!) that I would not be happy with a 12 colour palette. I couldn’t handle the stress in choosing 😂😂😂. So I’m aiming for a 24 colour palette. Using my new swatch book has been very helpful…. So far I know that I cannot do without Naples Yellow. It gives a butteriness to whatever I mix it with…. So one down, 23 to go 😀

12 is too little for me too. But 24 would be plenty right now I feel.

Thank you very much for your colour palette thoughts and try outs. My absolute first colour is always potters pink. I like that earthy pink and strong granulation. Schmincke and Aquarius both work beautifully.

Hey, speaking of mixing dupes... Just the other day I was trying to mix Cascade Green! Of course the problem is they don't tell us which PB 15 or which PBr7 is in it. I did mix close matches with a couple combos: Phthalo Blue GS with Burnt Umber, and Phthalo Blue RS with Raw Sienna (I was using DS paints, and I used Monte Amiata Natural Sienna). I felt the second mix was easier to achieve and provided a wider range of hues, but I actually don't have a tube of Cascade Green so I'm not sure which is actually closer! Of course I 100% agree with buying a convenience mix when you use a lot of it, but I just love mixing colors for the fun of it 🙂 I might have to buy a tube someday, since it is a color inspired by my part of the world and would be super useful for landscapes around here.
@iritlandgraf2 жыл бұрын
I'm all about what gets you faster to the fun parts😀 but if one has both these colors in their palette for sure it's worth trying to mix yourself. I removed these (phthlao blue and burnt umber) a long time from my palette so for me the straight from the tube cascade green makes sense 😀
