My favorites are Daniel smith: I love cobalt turquoise and cobalt teal blue, they are both beautiful color and granulate wonderfully, mixed with an opposite color like transparent pyrrol orange it's really nice! another favorite combo for skys is cerulean blue (super granulating soft transparent blue, very natural looking) mixed with moonglow. I don't know how you do without buff titanium as well for urban sketching, I used it so much in europe just to make different tones for rocks and buildings and sand. Those are pretty much my favorite :) When I went in France I bought a sennelier palette+paints to try them out, it's so different from what I know! But they are beautiful colors as well

Since you love granulation and separation I would recommend Daniel Smith's Rose of Ultramarine and Undersea Green. I only have two Senneliers and their French Vermillion is one of my favorite reds (I purchased a full pan of it at BHV in Paris when I was there with my partner last winter as one of a few souvenirs!). Btw, I just discovered your channel and I subscribed. I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos!

I really like your color choices. Green Apatite is a real favorite. Phthalo Turquoise too, although mine is Sennelier. My favorite yellow is Daniel Smith's Isoindoline Yellow. It's gorgeously warm and it washes out to a lovely pale peach. It's unique that way. I also love Sennelier's Helios Purple. It's a quinacridone magenta but better. It seems to have more life to it. It's beautiful. Great video!

I think this is the most fun I’ve ever had on a palette tour ever, and your layout is gorgeous. Two of the colors you have on your palette are two that I CAN NOT live my life without-Daniel smith quinacridone Gold and Daniel Smith moon glow. Special mentions are quinacridone rose, phthalate turquoise, and the sennelier dioxazine purple (turns out it was cobalt violet deep hue. I use dioxazine purple in my palette....close enough!)......but if I HAD to give those three up I would survive. But I would never stop crying if I had to give up my Quin Gold and moonglow. And yes, I HAVE stockpiled enough Quin Gold to survive our pigment apocalypse. 😭

Wonderful palette! I learned if you take lunar black and put a mix of paint and water on your paper, then put a different color in the middle of it. Watch as the color will repel the lunar black paint. It’s amazing. It’s the only Daniel Smith color that does that. Give it a try!

Naples yellow has been a recent standout for me, I Don’t know how I was painting before I got it! I also mix watercolour and gouache and love variety and like opaque colours as much as transparent. I also love most of the paints I have because I paint a variety of things and love to use tons of colours (although an individual painting has a more limited pallet). The Naples yellow I have is by m.graham.

Thank you so much for sharing your time and talents with a newbie to watercolor. This is so helpful as I haven’t bought any tube paint because I was overwhelmed by all the choices. I simply love your style and how you explain how to do things and why, which sets you apart from the rest. I feel so blessed to have found you because I was getting frustrated and getting ready to give up and that maybe it’s just not my medium even though I love how it looks. I have zero experience with art and jus caught the bug 6 months ago when I took a wine and paint class and that was the first time I picked up a brush in 46 years when I was about 6 years old. I came across your plain air painting last night an have been binge watching your videos since. Thank you for all that you do and I’m eager to make a journal today and rewatch some of your videos and paint along!

Hi!! 👋 Fun that we have the same colors. We have good taste I guess!!!! 😂 😜 I hope you will like to use Naples Yellow in your clouds and for other things as well! The thing for opaques would be, I think : use them diluted enough wet in wet if you don't want to get an opaque feeling and in order to create great effects, and use it in your first layer as they are obviously not good for glazing. But I also use them, sometimes, at the end with a thick consistency, for a few opaque bright touches. 😛 😉 See you!! 😘

You may like Daniel smiths cascade green for the same reasons you like moonglow.. it’s a mix of granulating blue and green and beautiful in foliage. I like it for the interesting effects it gives without any extra effort. At first I stayed away from any paints that were not single pigment but I just love the effects that moonglow and cascade green give, especially when working quickly. They seem to paint themselves beautifully.
@FollowingtheWhiteRabbit

Hi Shena! Thanks for your comment and your recommendation! You're right, I have Cascade green, I should definitely try it again! 😃 The things is, when I used it, I had this impression that its effect showed especially when it was all alone (like in a simple swatch) but I couldn't really enjoy it so well in a painting, in a overall wash, mixed with the other colors... Plus, i think the blueish tint that shows is ultramarine?! So, sometimes, when hesitating with the paint to include in the palette, I was just thinking : I just have to mix a green with ultramarine.... Not sure that's the good thinking though! That's nice your talked about it. I will keep thinking about it. 😊 See you!!

Like you, I love granulating paints. Flat paints bore me nowadays. Well, except Rembrandt which, imo, has the most natural colors out of all the big names. Sennelier Cenereous Blue & Vermilion , Schmincke Potters Pink, Cobalt Violet, Cobalt Blue & Super granulating Urban set, Rembrandt Viridian, Perm Madder Lake … VanGogh Prussian Blue & Sap Green M Graham Q. Magenta & Gamboge & Terra Rosa, Daniel Smith’s Primateks and Nickel Azo Yellow / Aussie Gold / Trans. Brown Oxide. Also QoR Umber flows absolutely gorgeous.

Hi this is Dionne and I’m totally loving your colors. I want to try the Colbalt Violet deep hue and Quin Fushia. Hi Dionne, how are you? ☺️ Thanks for your compliments about my palette! Yes, some people, like you, reminded me Cascade Green. I have it, I will need to try it again. When I used it, I had this impression that its effect showed especially when it was all alone (like in a simple swatch) but I couldn't really enjoy it so well in a painting, in a overall wash, mixed with the other colors... Plus, I think the blueish tint that shows is ultramarine?! So, sometimes, when hesitating with the paint to include in the palette, I was just thinking : I just have to mix a green with ultramarine.... Not sure that's the good thinking though! I will keep thinking about it and trying it. About the sketchbook work, I always try to "kill" the gutter by painting across. I guess I don't like boundaries! 😅

Hi ya, Loved this video, I have just bought the 16 pan set. not keen on all colours but will give them a try. What colour would you suggest for Cadnium Yellow to replace that. as I dont want to use Cadnium colours ? any ideas. My favourites are mixed, schminke, Daniel Smith, Winsor and Newton have good ones from each brand. I tend to use my sable brushes with the softer paints and my synthectic with winsor and newton as the pans are a lot harder.

Daniel Smith quin gold and pthalo green is divine when you mix them together. its a sap green but you get so many hues. daniel smith ran out of po48 and now their quin gold is now three hues. Daniel smith had to refomulate sap green because it had po48 in it and now it has similar pigments in it. still works with quin gold. nit the same but still stunning. moon glow OMG. quin rose would work good to for mixing and is a non fugative pv19

Thanks Eileen!! 😃 That's great (but a problem!...) that you reminded me about Cerulean Blue!! 🤣 I like it too but I am always hesitating between the Chromium and the Other one. I prefer the hue of the normal Cerulean Blue, slightly warmer, and maybe the kind of granulation (floculation they say sometimes?? I don't know if this is it) but I find it slightly weak, sometimes... The Cerulean Blue Chromium is richer with is nice but a bit too cool for my taste and has more a powder granulation I already have quite a lot in my palette. Ha ha, so many wonderful paints to choose from!! 😝

Ha ha, yeah, sure, Frouk fgb!! Me neither, I am the kind of person who likes it all, especially colors!!! 🤣 Before, I put the pans the other way in the palette and I could have a few more pans but it's slightly too tight for the pans I can buy by now.... I could definitely have more pans, yes 😅 but maybe more is not always better and you end up using always the same, I don't know?! Do you have a big palette with a huge amount of pans?! 😊 I sometimes hesitated for Lunar blue but I thought I already have quite a lof of blue (and I remembered I sometimes like to have Cerulean blue too!! 😯) and they say "Granulating lunar black floats above a phthalo undertone" so I thought I could rather mix it than buying one more tube... 🤔 What do you think?! I thought about making monochromatic studies with Lunar Black too!!!!! That's nice to know you are doing it. 😊 Don't you miss a plain undertone?!... Thanks a lot for your feedback. I should definitely try not to answer the comments with an even longer comment!!! 🤪😂

Hi Cathy! That's why I changed the direction of the pans but it's not a whole row less, just a few pans. ☺️ I think there was Cerulean Blue, Pyrrol Orange, Cadmium Yellow Orange, Indigo en addition to the other ones. 😌 I admit I hesitate with putting a few of these back but I don't know where!!! 😆 At some points, I sometimes had enven a few more opaques like Cadmium Lemon Yellow and Cadmium Orange. ☺️

Merci pour ta sélection de couleurs et ton partage dynamique. Je possède juste quelques couleurs de Sennellier et toujours intéressant de voir le rendu et les effets de granulation. J'ai suivi aussi ta démo de peinture en plain air de l'église. Superbe tuto. Bravo à toi

I have never used either of these paint brands. So it is fun to see how they perform for you. I have mostly Holbein, Winsor & Newton, and M. Graham & Co., and Schmincke. My favorite currently is Holbein. Although hard to find the bigger tubes. Most of mine are the 5 mL. I do like granulating pigments. May have to try some of the Daniel Smith. They are easy to find here where I live.

Such a beautiful palette!! And thank you for writing down the names of the paints. I have an empty MEEDEN 24 pan palette (I think same as yours) and it was so perfect that I found this wonderful video!! I don't have any senellier or DS paints at the moment because I have been using student grade paints so far, but I am going to save up to purchase the paints in your palette one tube at a time!! :)

Hi Shinigami! Thanks for your comment! I am happy you liked my palette so much!! 😃 (btw my palette is a pencil box 😜) It can be nice for you to try artist grade paint. You will tell me if you feel the difference for real?! 😊 You could start buying 3 or 4 paints that could be a bit like primaries to start using them as a limited palette.

Really enjoyed this video! Some of my favorites are Sodalite Genuine, Cascade Green (both Daniel Smith), and I'm also really enjoying Winsor & Newton Cobalt Violet. I hope you will be doing more tutorials! I loved your Iceland sketchbook!

Irit, thank you so much! I am so glad you enjoyed the video! 😊 I already hesitated a few times for the Sodalite Genuine... Do you think I should end up buying it?! 😅 It seems a lovely pigment but I am not sure I really need it... I talked about Cascade Green in another comment. That's a lovely paint too! 😊 Yeah, I am definitely going to offer more tutorials but maybe only from time to time because they are soooo time consuming!!! 😱 I think I spent half a week on this one! 😅 Thanks about the Iceland sketchbook. ☺️ I may show you the Ontario sketchbook next week. And there is also an Artist VLOG coming (in Antwerp), I am so excited about it!! 😃

I think you need Sodalite in your life ;) And looking forward to seeing more videos! I was wondering if you could recommend a youtube vidoe/channel/class for your style of watercolours sketching? I paint a lot with watercolours, but haven't really managed to find my groove in urban sketching/loose sketching. Thanks again!

Haha, Irit, thanks for your opinion! I may try Sodalite one day, you are not the only one that recommended it. 😉 I don't really know any class for this style but - don't tell anyone!! 😅 - I plan to offer a watercolor online course this year. 😃 Do you think you will be interested about it?! ☺️ And I will try to keep sharing a lot of tips and demos on the channel to try to help you all to loosen up and express with watercolor of course. 😊

Very nice selection! My favourite watercolour paints are Schmincke, Sennelier and Holbein. French Ultramarine is granulating, while Ultramarine finest (e.g. from Schmincke) hardly granulates. I have no idea why the granulating variation is called French, though. Maybe because Sennelier were the first to produce that blue as a watercolour?

Hi HerculePoirot 😁 Thanks for your insights about Ultramarine and French. ;) As we say in France, I will sleep a bit less ignorant tonight! 😜 This granulating and Sennelier guesses call for an investigation!!! 😉

Just found this very interesting article about the history of Ultramarine: www.theparisreview.org/blog/2015/06/08/true-blue/ It wasn't Sennelier, but still a French chemist who discovered how to make the synthetic version of the extremely costly natural pigment made from lapislazuli.

French Ultramarine is slightly more on the red side compared to Ultramarine. John Cogley who currently owns Daniel Smith stated that this was down to a larger particle size which effects how the light is refracted. I have also read that PB29 can be be varied in colour during the manufacturing process - whether this again refers to the milled particle size or other process variables I don;t know - but from my own observation I can attest to the French version leaning more to red than other ultramarine's. D.S. do mill all their pigments on the larger side - (40 microns) according to D.S. literature; hence the noticeably greater granulation compared to other brands I think.

This is so helpful. I’m going to try a few of the colors you use, probably moon glow and the dark purple (the name escapes me right now lol). 😊💕 Do you use this palette for outside and in the house/studio? Specifically I mean, do you have one you keep at home and another that is in your bag, ready to go?
