They put a little thought into the design, it's just that they didn't get any thoughts from people who actually build in cases.

I love the CM 690! I had the CM 690 II with the hot swap bay on top. Great case overall. I put two fans in the side panel, one blowing on the GPU and one pulling air away from the CPU. Did keep everything pretty cool. The biggest annoyance I had with the case was the massive ventilated top cover had central venting, but the metal top of the case where you mount a radiator and fans was actually offset to the open side of the case. So when you mount a radiator inside the case and fans on top, the top panel could not actually fit back on! What moron designs a case with space for a huge radiator and fans, but then misaligns the space for the fans? Otherwise, great old school air flow focused case at a time when no air flow and glass panels were coming into vogue.

I'm typing this on a computer that's also on a CM690, but has an acrylic side panel window. I had the 1st gen CM 690 and it served me well for nearly a decade as did the PSU which was a Corsair TX 650 (and it's still going strong in another system). It was quite good for thermals and very spacious for both an upper mid-range GPU and several HDDs especially compared to my previous case: Thermaltake Tsunami Dream. What annoyed me about the case were the side fan mounts which were staggered rather than being aligned. It was just an aesthetic gripe.

Bit of a necro here, but, as someone who owns, and still runs a 13 year old PC that was built with premium parts for its time, I can confirm that these are finnicky as hell to OC. Not sure if it's the same with modern PC's, or this PC for that matter, but on my old dinosaur, it ties the FSB speed to RAM and BCLK speeds. You have to find the right Core multiplier (which has to be divisible by the rated FSB/and RAM speeds) in order to get a stable system boot. If you get the core multplier right, XMP should automatically display the correct OC frequency options for the RAM. If it isnt automatically displaying the correct frequencies for the RAM, it just won't boot.
