5:51 ...or the replacement psu is not compatible even with the adapter. Those motherboards that use proprietary connectors are quite picky about the PSU that you use. You might get it to start if you hold or press the power button at the exact time that you plug it in AC power if it's anything like HP's proprietary junk.

Silverstone can be pretty hit or miss I've heard good things about them But in my own personal experience, I had a 750w 80+ gold Silverstone power supply burn/melt the 5v portion of the SATA power cable that came with it. All that was connected to it was a fan hub with 3 fans on it, so it wasn't an issue of too much power draw, and it also wasnt a case of a loose connection, cause it was fitted snugly. At least it didn't take any other components with it, but I'll still never buy a Silverstone PSU again.

@@kojetono5853 it wasn't the fan hub, I have been using the hub for about a year since this happened with no issues. The sata power cable itself burned up about 6 inches before the connection point, so I've gotta assume there was a short in the cable itself inside the rubber insulation. It was brand new, first time powering it up with the cable connected, and I didn't do anything to it that could have broken the cable inside or damaged the insulation and exposed the wire. It just comes back to Silverstone having shitty quality control standards, but try telling them that. They refused my RMA for something that was 100% their fault and could have potentially burned my whole house down. Never again. I buy Corsair PSUs now. They've got Johnnyguru working on their power supplies, and while I know you can't just blindly trust big companies, I trust Johnny.

Maybe it always crashes in the menu because it's allowed to render as many fps as possible. That kind of behavior was killing dozens of 3080s and 3090s in that Open World Amazon game I can't remember. You can try limiting the fps using RTSS to eg. 120 fps and without the power limit set to 26 %. Then if that works and you are actually in the game, you could disable the fps limiter using a hotkey (Afterburner settings) and see the whole system slowly melt into a single blob of magic goo.

I used to work at Fry's Computer Repair department and we had one of those come in. It had a 1080 (not sure if TI) with a 650w psu and the costumer was wondering why it would shut off when he loaded some games. He was lucky it didn't fry the other parts. Due to the form factor there wasn't much we could do so he had to go through MSI and i believe they installed the wrong PSU unit on that model. I was also shocked to see laptop ram in desktops around that time. It was normally used in low end, sub 300 dollar computers. It almost looked like they took a laptop they didn't sell, pulled out the MB and put it in a rejected case and sold it. People tried to upgrade them, but the motherboard lacked PCI slots, the power cables and heat sink were all proprietary, and the ram was sometimes soldered onto the MB so literally nothing was upgrade-able.

1 molex connector is rated to put out max 54Watts . Even with 2 molex connectors, there is not enough power to replace an 8-pin which is rated to do 150W per connector. A molex connector has only 1 cable for 12V rail. An 8pin PCI-e cable has 3 cables for 12V rail. In the worst scenario, the overheating cables can catch fire. That 3080Ti can pull over 300+Watts.

The single pcie cable won't be an issue. There's 3 12v conductors each carrying less than 100w(PSU end) which is around 8A @12v. That's really not that much. Your car stereo (head unit) draws more than that (10A+) on the same sized conductor. It's because the 3080ti can have short term power spikes that are tripping the PSU. That's why when you click in the BF menu it was failing at less power level than when you slowly increased it in-game. There's something in that menu causing one of the short term spikes. You then exceeded the trip point in game(long term power plus spikes) at 60%+, but it wouldn't get out of the BF menu at that level (tripped at 60% in menu, could game at near 75% if increased after whatever causes the spike in menu) It wasn't the cable (in fact GN actually tested power over a single split 8 pin in one of their videos and needed to draw crazy power to cause an issue on a big PSU. Even with a crappy extension added)
@kasimirdenhertog3516
@kasimirdenhertog3516 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 3090 also has big short term power spikes. I had it paired with a 700W 80 Plus Platinum rated PSU and that would still trip. Put a 1200W in for good measure. Also, consider the PSU rails. If you have multiple, you can split the components across them. I think FlexPSUs just have a single rail, so also not ideal.

This video brought back memories I've had suppressed for decades from my first PC like ptsd. My first ever pc was a Dell back in the 90s. Pentium 4 powered for those that remember that old tank of a single core processor. As I was getting into gaming it became its baked in graphics just wasn't enough. But it did have an open slot for AGC? I honestly can't what the old slot was called before PCI. So we picked up a radeon graphics card. Keep in mind this was before Amazon, and there weren't really any pc hardware stores around so taking a week or two for parts was the norm, keep this in mind. At the time would have made about the most powerful gaming combo for the time. I was so excited. Only to find out, there wasn't a plug for it off the factory psu. Not a big deal we ordered a new psu. After it arrived we went to install it to find that dell had proprietary connections on the Mobo. They literally were switching wires around and we likely had fried it. But reguardless, that meant we now needed to order a new mobo. Went to install it and wouldn't you know it both the factory cooler and the case mounts were proprietary. In the end what we thought was going to be a graphics card installation turned into literally months of ordering and then waiting on parts which resulted in an almost entirely new PC that could only repurpose the Ram, HDD, and disc drive. Which of course in the era of PCs literally moving leaps and bounds was already no longer the top of the line powerhouse we had hoped and was completely outdated by dual core processors a year or so later. Such is life.

The PSU standard you say is "proprietary" is not. In Europe, for example, OEM manufacturers have to use the "ATX 12VO" standard, which is more modern than the current PSU standard (24Pin) we use for custom PCs. Also they can be smaller and are way more efficent than current PSU´s. I would say that this newer standard will also make its way into custom PCs in the next 1-2 years.

i mean follow the leads of the old font i/o and cut the old connection solder new leads to the appropriate io, the case is pretty neat to reuse and repurpose instead of going to Ewaste hell

This is super cool! The next thing I want to see you do is destroy the internals of the case and make it actually decent for thermals and get that 850w power supply for MAXIMUM POWER!

The thing about power....If they won't allow you to take away enough power on the slider, lowering the clock does everything. Lower temp, less power draw, and lower voltages too. Mostly only need to do something like that if you want to lower the temp/power. It's pretty impressive how much high end GPUs can do even with lower clocks.

Great video! I am running a shoebox pc with a 5600x and a 3060ti with a 500w flex psu, and it runs perfect all day long but was curious what would happen if I upgraded the video card. Well, now I know, can't go to a 3080
@fred_derf
@fred_derf 2 жыл бұрын
Any decent power supply will simply shut down if you attempt to draw too much power from it, not explode and kill the motherboard… So you should be fine trying the 3080 and see how it goes before upgrading the PS. Note: Make sure you have a way to measure the input amperage (wattage), then multiply by 0.8 to determine how much power is actually being produced during your testing. Note 2: nVidia recommends using a (minimum) 750 watt power supply with a 3080, so you'll probably need a more capable power supply.

The issue is that with high fps swings Ampere has really bad transient spikes, like 3x the normal power draw for a couple milliseconds. And small fort factor PSUs don't have enough capacitance to handle the wild swing. Some of the ATX 80+ Titanium PSUs have the same issue because part of getting efficiency up is reducing the amount of capacitance. Adding in a frame rate cap to reduce how large the FPS swings are going into menus helps a lot.

Had the EXACT same issue with my new 3080 Ti and my Seasonic Focus Plus 750W. Protip: being a savage would've (probably) helped. I was having issues even at 50% with RDR2 (had issues just loading into a game) but undervolting to 0.80v let me play fine until I got my Leadex Titanium.

hmmm interesting.... are you somehow curious which part is really fried in the msi motherboard? I'm also curious.... I hope you'd use a microscope or magnifier to check an actual burnt pcb trace and also, you can try using a pen trace ink for repair.
