Is the infamous irohazaka jump actually possible, or is it initial d’s biggest gimmick?
I had never attempted the jump before, so firstly I needed to see if drivers were actually pulling this move out of the metaphorical bag. But, I found something pretty strange.
There are plenty of videos of the jump being performed, but they never actually show the jump in one action. It’s always the lead up, then a cut to the jump. So, why is this? Is it too difficult for even the best drivers to perform?
To find out the answer, I’d need to try it out myself.
I'm sure most of you know what the irohzaka jump, but if not, let me give you a quick rundown..
the irohzaka jump is the term for a driving technique used in initial d, in which a driver used to overtake an opponent by jumping off the road, onto the over side of a hairpin.
I've had a lot of suggestions to make a video on the irohzaka jump for assetto corsa, but honestly, I had never tried it myself. I had only semi learned irohzaka about A month prior, I never once thought to try and jump off a ledge.
So I went on a little side mission to try and find if anyone else had made a tutorial on it, but surprise surprise, there weren't any. I'll be teaching you how to do it at the end of the video, don't worry.
There were some cinematic videos of the jump, however, like this one, or this one. But there's one thing missing from them, they never show the jump in one action. It's always the leadup, then a low down shot of them jumping.
Well, that got me thinking, why is that? And, with all the suggestions I got to make a tutorial on it, I knew I had to try it. But, there was an issue. You would think the irohazaka jump in assetto corsa would be relatively simple right? Just chuck your car off a ledge and hope for the best. Well, that assumption is wrong. REally wrong. This jump broke me. Intellectually, emotionally. It just destroyed me, and I want to tell you the journey that I’ve been through, attempting to learn it so I could teach it to you guys.
I loaded up ek irohzaka in the trusty mister 2 show shot of mr2 badge and set off down the snaking slope in an attempt to master it myself. But, with 48 hairpins, I'd first needed to find out which one you can actually do the jump on. So, I set about finding it
I could have just attempted the irohzaka jump on each corner but that would not have been practical at all. I had to work smarter, not harder. So instead. On my first run down, I didn't attempt it all. I merely took a small miander down the road to case it out. I could easily remove 46 number of hairpins from the equation simply because it looked impossible. Such as
Were left with 2 possible corners, and luckily, they were right next to each other. The first wasn’t as big of a jump as the second. But, there was a lot more room to maneuver before the jump however. I attempted this jump a number of times, each one as futile as the last. I looked back at the scene in initial d, and it was clear that jump #1 wasn’t the one.
With one jump remaining, I knew all I had to do now was perfect the jump. So, I took a lengthy run up in my first irohzaka jump attempt.
Anyway, back to the iroh jump.
It was almost as if the stars were aligning. The approach to the corner seemingly took forever. I gave the handbrake a hearty heave, swung the back end around and aligned the front of my car perfectly for the jump. I stepped on the throttle, gripping the steering wheel as tight as ever and sent it off the edge.

You didn’t think it would be that easy would you?
Not at all.
So, up and down I went along this short section of road. Attempting it over, and over and over and over and over. This took forever. The sun was even starting to set.
I spent around an hour attempting it, with each attempt getting close and closer. But then, after one particularly good attempt, I jumped over the guardrail and fell out of the map. Does that count as an irohazaka jump? No.
And with that, I had reached my limit. So I shut the game down.
