I still remember discovering that one kurb in Seattle circuit in Gran Turismo 3, I remember hitting it acidentally with the Formula GT but instead of the car go fly, it sticked to the kurb and then I was able to go much faster around the corner, like a Gutter Run but inverted
@Official_MikeyT Жыл бұрын
I hated that circuit when I was a kid, then I got addicted to GTPSP in my adolesence and it became my favourite city circuit for a while. That curb is so rewarding when you nail it.

5:45 it's really easy to teach yourself this technique and how it feels if you take the MX-5 Cup car around Mugello in AC. the corners and curbs at Mugello mixed with the MX-5 Cup's predictability make for a near perfect learning scenario.

There is also slow speed inside apex sausage kerbs on some hairpins, where you can hook the inside wheels on the inside of the curb, effectively making a berm for the inside wheels. Hairpin at the end of Jerez's backstraight is a good example.

The way I use curbs is basically, I put my inner wheels inside the curb so my wheels are on the grass. My wheels will grab the curb, and will slingshot my car around the corner. It is like the gutter run but using curbs instead.

Finally someone described the Watkins Glen curb trick. I do that all the time. It’s so nice to look at
@ianjameslake Жыл бұрын
Watkins curb inside front touch isn't actually caused by the inside front losing traction. It's actually caused because the touch loads the inside left front for a moment, which unloads both the outside left front and inside right rear, and in turn loads up the outside left rear, breaking it's traction slightly. This dynamic change in crossweight, mainly due to the outside left rear getting slightly more loaded, causes the car to oversteer. It's similar to touching the apron at an oval track, causing an oversteer moment.
@Ultra-161 Жыл бұрын
@@ianjameslake That makes alot more sense.

I thought the Watkins Glen trick was gonna be hooking the kerb like the Initial D gutter run. Did it in FR3.5 in Iracing and it was stupid quick.

Was holding on nitpicking till 5:45 explanation... No, that's not how it works. The kerbs do loose you traction (mostly because of tyre movement up/down for which dampers are much under prepared to deal). but they help you turn in different ways: 1) The kerb is higher, putting inside front there moves the weight distribution off the rear inside to there, changing the cars mechanical balance. This is the most common reason for kerbs giving oversteer. (even at watkins, just the track camber change over kerb is enough to have this) 2) AC kerbs are sticky, the earlier noted damping issues combined with limited physics frame rate can lead to runaway tyre loads which can randomly pull the car >laterally< (its a glitch). If the stars align (frequencies match) its possible to rely on this glitch in race over many laps. Ofc the that one is very rare but AFAIR THAT particular kerb has just the right spacing and common car speeds to get it, so chances are that's what you discovered. A more "famous" case of kerbs doing 2) are some (old-ish) popular videos at spa in GT3s which over the course of development were followed by patch fixes (but never disappeared completely). 3) Would be just increased tyre drag, the energy the dampers are struggling to dissipate has to come from somewhere, saw kerbs can pull just like putting tyre in sand or puddle, just to a smaller extent. and 4) that's not a case here - because rebound damping is usually much stronger than bump, the kerb can pull the suspension down (not a glitch, this happens IRL too, kerbs or bumps) which increases the efficiency of front wing shifting aero balance forward. It requires a very stiff single seater to feel oversteer from that effect thou. In general thou, the saw kerbs themselves are rarely more slippery, rather cars just don't have enough damping to calm the tyre going pogo. Im mentioning it because you CAN use damper adjustments to fix some of the kerb issues, not all, not completely but it can help (fast damping has far more impact on it). In your watkins case its 2) and 3) mainly, adding 1) as the car is pulled deeper. GL with your league :3

Very great video but I thought the angle of the curbs will be a theme also. If you catch as much speed out the corner as possible, some exit curbs may push you back on the track which I use sometimes. But maybe thats not the fastest line to take 😅

The curb at Watkins doesn’t really work like that. If the curb is slippery and given that your formula car is not front wheel drive, the inside wheel should experience less friction to slow you down for the smaller radius, so the slipperiness is not the reason why it works. The more likely reason is that the curb acts like a gutter that hooks your inner wheel in a smaller radius and prevented your car from washing our. However you need to be careful to maintain that slip angle because if your rear wheel lands in the gutter, you will have no rear slip angle and you will under steer and shoot straight across the track.
