Being a farmer, I've been an offgridder for 32 years. Our biggest problem is having to consume a great deal of energy for everything in a farm. Big volumes of cheaply stored renewable energy will definitely change the face of farming and also help decrease carbon emissions. Governments are slow and sluggish in acting on the urgency of the issue. I hope they will open their eyes and minds soon. For all of us.

You should be careful listening to anyone, including this channel. Everyone has their own biases and this channel is no different, he is always desperate to pump up any "green" technology and ignores the downsides of the things he discusses, here for example the reality is redux flow batteries are very low density storage systems. It is completely impractical to use these for most use cases as you would need very large amounts of land to store the energy of a large industrial lithium ion battery. This channel always seems to ignore the clear downsides of the technology he discusses if it favours an advertised green solution.
@davestagner
@davestagner 10 ай бұрын
@@paulosullivan3472 Low density storage is only a problem if physical space is at a premium, i.e. on board a vehicle. But for grid scale storage, the usual constraints are cost and lifespan, not size. Lithium batteries are expensive, and have a relatively low ceiling on the number of charging cycles they can handle. Flow batteries can be made of much cheaper materials (like iron and salt!), and can avoid the dendrite problem that eventually kills lithium. This makes it cheaper. If the grid battery farm needs another acre or two of land, that’s ok, if it means saving millions of dollars in the process. Make sure you’re looking at the correct constraints.

Dave, I appreciate your videos! It is my opinion, based on my own energy needs, doing a lot of reading, watching everything on batteries and renewable energy, etc., that batteries are the key to everything! We need less expensive, home and business scale storage batteries. And these batteries need to be inexpensive, safe, affordable, easily recyclable, low cost, made of common materials, and economical. We also need more streamlined permitting and easier access to financing for small scale solar, wind and batteries. Citizens have been mistreated by the utility monopolies for far too long. Distributed energy production and storage is robust.

A German company is advertising a flow battery that can be installed at home like a powerwall: "Prolux Solutions says that all components can be repaired indefinitely. It notes that the vanadium electrolyte also retains at least 95% of its capacity, even after 20 years, so it can be reused indefinitely." I live off grid full time and now use LIFEPO4 but I like the idea of a battery that can be fully repaired and doesn't require Lithium mining and can be fully recycled.

First to demonstrate the vanadium battery was of course Maria Kazacas of NSW University Australia. I thought it was a great idea . Naturally what came to mind then was other elements to use with multiple valence states to exploit , elements like iron yes , then there's copper too but iron is more appealing. Lead also has multiple valence states and the lead acid battery operates because of this . The advantage is when you can avoid the clutter and unpredictability of how heaps of different substances will adversely interact and shorten life . There's heaps of different substances in the lithium batteries as an example. .

I mean they've already installed systems, but when we get the most benefit is when a few of these start to push out the others so there are less competitors AND they can then get to economics of scale.

The problem with iron flow batteries is that they haven't broken anywhere close to theoretical capacities. A entire large truck trailer (lori) holds about 5-20kwh of energy(this is why they don't advertise actual capacities). To give context a $1500 5kwh eg4 lifepo4(one of the safest battery chemistries) fits in a 3u server casing ( about 19"x12"x36"). In other words 15kwh can fit in about a cubic meter. You could throw 4 of them by themselves in a truck trailer and light it on fire with no problems. Also the infrastructure for iron flow batteries is huge when you don't count the batteries. I would wager that they cost 1000's of times more that the lifepo4 equivalent, making it kind of a grid level scam.

An interesting advantage of Vanadium flow batteries is that it's easy to increase storage capacity by simply increasing the electrolyte tank size, theoretically without limit. The Iron Salt battery can't do this as the iron is deposited as a solid. Similarly for the Redflow zinc bromine battery. For this reason I wouldn't call them true flow batteries.

Another great video! Thanks so much! I've seen some of your other fine work in videos related to energy usage also. I'm thinking now of refrigeration and heat pumping. I've just learned some interesting things about "nitinol", a nickel-titanium alloy that is one of those amazing "memory metals" that can be restored to an "original" shape. NASA is using that property to make more durable tires for vehicles off Earth. The key point of my interest at the moment lies more in the facts about its stretchability/temporary deformation. A sufficiently thin straight rod of the stuff can be bent to about 180 degrees by hand, which yields a surprising result. The stress of the bending causes it to release heat, enough to startle the one who bent the rod (but not to burn). Then, reversing the deformation, the unbending causes it to absorb heat, again a startling effect on the hand. There is where the revelations of this property ended in the video I watched (from a well-known You-Tuber). It wasn't central to that presentation. But there was a mention that this heat transfer ability is under investigation for application in refrigerators and heat pumps, and has the potential to reduce costs in those applications significantly. So Dave, have any of your investigations run into this idea? If you're interested, I'd love to see a spot on this!

awesome, all your videos are so clear and interesting and we need to stay well informed, even though the scope is large and the developments are fast. What you bring together is not only fascinating, it shows us developments we would otherwise not know about at all. Thanks!

Just want to add another thumbs-up comment ... you manage to consistently, to me anyway, behave as one of the most sanest/reasonable/gracious people I've ever come across in person or via media like KZbin et. al. I consume a fair bit of information and I struggle sometimes with curtailing my anger/frustration at the world and I'm not disinclined to give some people (if they don't appear too vulnerable or like they would care lol or if they dish out much worse themselves) my err ... emotional ... appraisal. If I were to arrange all the billions of people in the world by order of how LEAST likely I am to be annoyed by them or overcome by a desire to insult them ... I figure you'd be within the top 100. You do fantastic work. :) (I mean "fantastic" as in great lol and not in an impugning way!). Please don't let the occasional few who struggle with their emotional control/opinions dissuade you at all.

On a similar note but non flow is EOS Energy, their unit is a Zinc Bromine sealed cell with conductive polymers they recently received a $400m loan from the LDES DOE loan program, loan is to build out 8GWh of automated production lines, been around for a long time but the cells are now ready for scaling having been field proven for last 3-4yrs, very low cost of production at scale and has been through a 2 year verification process with DOE to get the loan

Thank you, Dave, for the usual useful and informative video. Flow batteries have a great future in many systems, from domestic to office and small factories right up to grid level storage. As I am sure you know, they are safer and cheaper than lithium-ion and have the advantage of being able to be fully charged and discharged with virtually no degradation. Neither do they suffer 'vampire drain' like lithium-ion and hold their charge for many months or even years. Australian company Redflow, I think, is worth a mention as they make a zinc bromide redox battery that is ideal for domestic applications and is available to buy in the UK (and no, I don't have shares in the company).

Really appreciate the effort & time behind the video - thank you for your time and for sharing your passion - Voltstorage GmbH don't know if it is the same you mention for vanadium, do iron flow as well...I personally wouldn't even consider vanadium or bromide for home use if a iron flow solution were available (due to their toxicity) in a more manageable form rather than a 33 Ton heavy & 40 feet long container

I'm well ahead of the technology curve on this as usual. You know how building materials might be building batteries one day ? Well, my Ontario winter car the EEPmobile is an advanced prototype of an iron and salt water iron oxide battery using the STRUCTURE as the battery material to save weight and space. Brilliant !

It should be noted that there’s not a need for grid scale batteries to be particularly energy dense. Shipping containers can be stacked on top of each other and pull double duty to hold the solar panels on top or be incorporated into the support towers of wind turbines.
