These are some of my all-time favourite Iron & Wine lyrics: "The makers of the medicine will always say you're looking sick" and "No-one knew the arm was broken but everybody signed the cast."

If you're shocked by Beam's jazz direction, you haven't been paying much attention to his albums. You can prize the material that made you a fan, but never discourage an artist from using his diverse genius. You can always depend on his lyrical poetry and delicate vocals. I love this song. It's truly fantastic and fresh.

i love how people are saying things like "omg JAZZ," while I thought nothing of the jazz elements of the song and simply enjoyed the song for what it was. it's a unique sound for today's music, and I really appreciate it.

In music, we generally become fans of an artist on the basis of how he or she executes our own favorite style of music. When they deviate, we complain. Rather than trying to reorient our taste to keep up with the artist himself, we stick to the past. It exposes how we are not really lovers of music or artistry, but ourselves.Following an iconoclast, i.e. Sam Beam, is a challenge, but doing so allows us to grow with him rather than using him to fulfill our stale expectations. Listen regardless.

I'm not familiar with his / their work yet, but this is pure class - a kind of folk / jazz / pop hybrid that only extremely competent musicians can pull off. I definitely want more.

“This record felt like a reward to myself after the way I went about making the last few.” He has come a long way since the Creek Drank the Cradle. He recorded that entire album in his home before he was even signed to Sub Pop Records. About all he had access to was a few guitars, banjos, and other acoustic instruments. Now he's taking advantage of what he has available to him, and is making the music he really wants to make. Everyone develops their skills overtime. Let the man make his music.

if you won't listen to iron and wine any more because of his new style, he doesn't want you listening anyway. 5 albums of acoustic folk would have his fans crying for him to mix it up. instead we get 5 albums of him mixing it up and everyone cries for him to go back to his old style. the things that make him great haven't changed: his voice, his lyrics, his melodies. the style has changed because no one wants to make the same thing over and over, and no one should want to hear that anyway.

Kiss Each Other Clean was a great intro into this. He basically gave his fans a heads-up as to where his music was going and that he was trying new things. This still has Sam's lyrical perfection, his heartfelt devotion to each song, and the passion I have come to love about Iron and Wine. Keep it coming.

I have finally grocked this as well. His music is sublimely subtle. It’s like the subtle ness is a player in the music as much as the Melodies . I see it as the one constant with his music from the very beginning and I think it is an incredibly unique and special talent out of all the musicians I listen to. Sometimes I crave for him to belt some part of a song. But it’s not his style. His art is the subtle art ❤

If you're missing the slower, folky tunes of Sam Beam then you don't appreciate is wide ranged musical talent. He gets better and better as the years go on. That is very rare for a musician and I for one appreciate his ever growing talents. Kudos to Sam and the rest of Iron and Wine.

It's really not unthinkable for a folk artist to incorporate jazz into their repertoire. Pentangle and John Martyn, among many others, were doing it back in the 70s. This right here is some good shit.

This is so great. I remember Iron and Wine for a few reasons from my college years - friends girlfriend loved Boy with a Coin and another friend learned to play guitar by playing Such Great Heights literally 24/7 - but I am loving the new jazzy style. It's great, its not just jazz, it'a almost like a showtune, very theatrical.

I would say that "Kiss Each Other Clean" was more funk than jazz. Though I think you're right about the Nick Drake influence from "Bryter Layter" playing a part in Sam Beams adventures with folk. I'm glad he is evolving. He's the Radiohead of folk for sure.

# LYRICS # I came to you and you to me And we were tapping on the window at the children when the piggy bank broke Pitching quite a fit About how the makers of the medicine will always say you’re looking sick I came to you and you to me And we would whimper to the women washing milk off of their formal white clothes But the funny thing Was how when God was in his people we were dreaming about who else to be And all the fingers that we damaged when all we wanted was a diamond ring I came to you (came to you) and you to me (came to me) And we were barking at the drug dogs, blood dried black on their hands And never realized You never tussle with a giant til you can hit him right between the eyes (I came to you, I came to you) And that no matter how we chewed it, we’d be choking on a compromise (I came to you, I came to you) Cause all the jaws, all the claws lay restless by the riverside (I came to you, I came to you) And it wasn’t muscle in the shadow that was shoving us into the light I came to you and you to me And we were snatching at a war baby’s bottle just to trade it for change But now it’s come to pass That every eye beneath the mountain saw the smoke but no one heard the blast That no one knew the arm was broken although everybody signed the cast And until the government was good, she said “Man, I thought you’d never ask” And when love wore out her welcome, they just booked her for a bag of grass That while she cried on the cross, we were sucking on the laughing gas And when the head had left the body, not a flag was hanging half-mast (I came to you, I came to you) I came to you and you to me And then we lost our own lovers’ revolution but it started again And now we’re one One of the parade wake widows walking home into the setting sun One of the soldiers lost in the dreams that never lose the gun (I came to you, I came to you) One of the wise men wandering the podium without a tongue One of the trophies tarnished by the mess we made of being young (I came to you, I came to you) One of the prayers, one of the promises swallowed with our chewing gum One of the deaf ears, dumber all the time for all the years of drums (I came to you, I came to you) One of the wide-eyed soap boxes buried under Washington One of the beat cops combing every sidewalk crack for love (I came to you, I came to you) One of the crowded stars uncounted when the map was done One of the withered in the garden left to wonder when the rain will come

I think he's doing the folk world a great service. This certainly reminds me of some of the progressive folk from the 60s (Pentangle or Davy Graham or what have you) which was characterized by folk melodies and hooks but jazz rhythms of instrumentation. Which is great, because I thought Kiss Each Other Clean drew a lot of influence from the jazz themes of Nick Drake's Bryter Layter, and it's exciting that his albums are starting to emulate (whether purposely or not) that aesthetic.
