Dault's Creek has it's beginnings in the Herman Hills. I went early to Herman as I wanted to get a good spot to video the CN and I wanted to do a little exploring before the train came-I figured I had about two hours. It was cold yesterday and I almost didn't have enough clothing but I keep my heavy Carhardt in the car so I was good-I regretted not wearing my sweatshirt as the hoodie keeps the wind out but lesson learned-keep a hoodie in the vehicle also! So I set out and after about two thirds of a mile I experienced a smell so strong there was no denying what it was! Urine scent from a wild animal! It had to have gone before me within the hour or probably alot less I thought as the odor was so strong and got stronger the further I went! My head was on a swivel as I walked-the thought of turning around never crossed my mind but I do admit to a feeling of what if-what should I do-don't run that would be the worst thing you could do! I have two weapons-a walking stick and my tripod-should I turn my camera on in case I come upon this "wild animal"? THis is hilly country with deep ravines and high rock outcrops. Finally the smell was gone but I was on high alert and did not think it advisable to go exploring at this time-huge disappointment but noone knew where I was-I try to give Jim an idea of where I'm going but many times I don;t know myself until I'm well on the way! NO phone service here the only idea of my whereabouts would be my car parked on the side of the road-hopefully Debbie a resident of Herman would wonder after many hours and contact my husband-now I'm thinking ahead!😆Anyway it was a very long wait next to beautiful drops on the Dault's Creek but the falls are so loud I would not hear anything coming up on me! You don't even hear the loud train until seconds before it comes into view! So I never saw what animal it was-I did see wolf tracks in the snow-they had been through at least one freeze and thaw so they had to be pretty old-an old pile of scat-also older so I don't know. Last year I saw a Bobcat cross the tracks from the old mill toward the old house so that is a possibility also. There are endless possibilities in the North Woods-"In the Pines In the Pines where the sun don't shine and we shiver the whole night through..." from "Port Protection" Thanks for listening!
