Oil was coming out of the turbo and going in to the intake. But my suggestion would be to pull the exhaust manifold and replace it. But while you’re in there make sure you’re not getting oil from the engine itself. Also those studs are threaded in to the manifold. Smack the exhaust housing with a BFH it’ll come off.

The new bolts for the turbo have to come from CAT. They’re a special alloy so the coefficient of thermal expansion more closely matches the cast manifold and turbo housing. Regular bolts will break first time it gets hot. Use a torque wrench.

Hey Mark, be sure to save that oil return line for the turbo. Steve Feszchak of FSC Trucking did a turbo replacement on his '84 Pete 362 that also runs a 3406B Cat. When he got the new turbo, he found the oil return line they shipped was too short and had to reuse the old return line so as to get his truck working again (he works his cabover Pete) so just keep that in mind.

Oil on the compressor side of the turbo usually means that the sealing rings in the turbo are gone. That turbo uses plain bearings so the oil film strength is the bearing surface.

Another option for rusty bolts is a heat induction tool(Bolt Buster). They're a little pricey, but I've seen them do amazing things with seized bolts. The big plus is they fit in a tool box and don't take up floor space! Also, no open flame to worry about!

The turbo cartridge you took out that you called a paperweight can be reconditioned at a good Turbo shop. They split the vanes from the shaft, clean them up, asses whats reuseable and reassemble with new seals and bnearings, they balance them. Its a lot cheaper than getting new or using unknown used ones.

Those bolts that hold the turbo on are usually threaded studs..And the manifold is threaded...also oil on the intake side of turbo usually means one of 2 things. Seals are out of Turbo. Or so much blowby that its coming back through from engine. With that turbo being froze it could very well be the blowby. But thats just my opinion. Hopefully its just the turbo.. Also your Tube for the breather for engine could be plugged also. Its on top of one of the Valve covers. That Milwaukee Impact is a Beast. Great Video.

If the RAM freed up when the line blew then the ram itself likely is fine internally. Sounds like there's a valving issue or a blocked line causing fluid to not flow correctly. I could be wrong as I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure that if the RAM was seized it would stay seized whether the lines were connected or not.

Hey mark, with there being oil on the air side of the turbo I believe it we be best to take the air to air apart and clean it. Either it soon to be a runaway or when it was still in use it had already ran away. Just it sitting around for so long I doubt you would have to worry about it, but never hurts to check.

when you make hoses lube the taper and the hose to make your life easier, the way you removed the turbo is called the cartridge, back in the day you could buy just that and you reused all the other stuff so you didnt have to remove the manifold, to remove a cat turbo you tighten the bolts and break them its easier, the bolts are stainless,

I think at one time the AIR FILTER was plugged. Causes oil to bypass the seals, and it might be the cause of oil up towards the intake. Pull it off the aftercooler and see if it’s up that far. I doubt it is.

Happy to see the cab over getting some love. I have an Australian '85 version with very similar paint job. It's interesting to me to see the similarities and differences, eg mine has two cab mounts, one on each side and the stacks rise with the cab from a sort of bell shaped flange thingy ( sorry I don't know the correct term). Anyway love your work. Oh, we call Daytons spider rims. I still run them and think they look cool with chromed rims and cap with maroon 'spokes" to match the frame and cab.

Oil on the intake side is because the turbo seals are gone and when you started it the oil pressure built up and passed the seals to the intake.
