This 1927 film covers a transportation fair organized by the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad at Halethorpe near Baltimore, the oldest railroad in the United States, celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the invention of the steam locomotive. It begins with a short overview of the history of transportation in the USA before the invention of the steam engine, from Native Americans on horseback to Stage Coaches after the Civil War. This is followed by a presentation of different types of steam engines from the B&O but also from other operators across the United States and Canada.

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. In 1927 the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad staged a pageant of American railroad transportation up to that time, picturing most of the locomotives and important rolling stock then available!

This is awesome. I believe either my great great grandfather or great great great grandfather was William Galloway. I have pictures of my great grandmother Valetta Galloway Roth and my grandmother, great aunt, and uncle at the fair. This was and still is a big deal to my family.

I'm glad this footage survives! I'm surprised that a lot of the 1900-1927 built locomotives shown in this film didn't survive! Something like this should be done again in 2027! (with most of the oldest engines being put on flatcars and be towed by a modern loco)

A very good video destroyed by timer in the bottom

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZbin users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.
