'To Tame A Land' is another of Harris' great epic songs, in the same vein as 'Phantom Of The Opera', 'Rime Of The Ancient Mariner', and 'Alexander The Great'. It is based on Frank Herbert's (1920--1986) novel Dune, one of the greatest science fiction epics of all time and first in a series of books. Like the movie, the song's lyrics won't make much sense unless you are familiar with the book.
The reason why the song was not called 'Dune', as anyone would have expected, was explained during the subsequent tour in support of the album. Bruce gave his view on the matter at a concert during the World Piece Tour:
Next song is all about a gentleman who wrote a science-fiction book called Dune, this one (...). He's an American called Mr. Frank Herbert, this particular gentleman, alright? And Mr. Herbert, as it turns out, is a bit of a cunt actually, because he... among other things he said that if we called this track that we wrote on the album 'Dune', that he'd sue us and stop the album coming out, and all kinds of very unpleasant things... So we had to re-title the track which is on the new album, and we had to call it 'To Tame A Land'.

Musically however, it is a brilliant masterpiece that begins slowly, breaks into a powerful driving rhythm, and ends with a long and interesting instrumental section inspired by the famous classical piece 'Asturias' by Spanish composer Isaak Albeniz (1860--1909), and which slowly retreats back to the original opening softness. 'Piece of Mind' is the fourth studio album by British heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It was originally released in 1983 on EMI, and on Capitol in the US. It was the first album to feature drummer Nicko McBrain, who had recently left the Paris-based band Trust.

Yeah, back then, the iPhones didn’t have the same pixel resolution, and too bad the sound quality isn’t HD. Probl’y a Sony VHS camcorder as big as three mailboxes. How’d they sneak it in? Oh yeah, it was the 80s, and in Canada. There weren’t body cavity searches when going to see a show.

The very first tune I EVER heard from Maiden. and it was back in 1983. A very good friend of mine introduced me to maiden and the first song he showed me was To Tame A Land. Needless to say that I had my mind blown... To this day, Piece Of Mind is my favoriet album. EPIC !!

My all time favorite Maiden song. It's THE reason I read the Dune series. This is such a different kind of song from everything else that was happening then. Me too. If you notice Harris didn't move at all, Bruce couldn't and try hitting those high notes, Harris said, and as a bass player myself, it's the hardest song to play, that's why he's not moving on stage, 😊

Ty frank herbert for being against metal, because although Dune is a great name for a song, To Tame a Land is so much more epic. And I think the song portrays Dune better being named to Tame A Land More than naming the song Dune because it adds a brand new meaning to the story in my opinion. I love the name of the song

How in hell they passed security by bringing in a camcorder to this concert, specially the size of the camera at the time. That's the reason we don't see much of old-school live concert videos in KZbin, because cameras, even tape recorders weren't allowed in concerts. That's amazing!!

Herbert was already in his 60s by this point and would die three years later. I’m sure he was just trying to protect his work. He couldn’t have known that Maiden was actually a literate and respectful band by heavy metal standards and did right by his novel.
