This song was one of the only really political songs that Iron Maiden had made up until this point. Usually, their songs were based on historical events or famous works of literature so this was quite a change for them. They were real story tellers and the lyrics and music was very intelligent. For a real history lesson listen toThe Trooper or for a master recreation of a famous piece of literature try The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

they're bang on the money by this point. Maiden were very much a commercial product. This was a darker tinged track admittedly. Compare this to the Di'Anno era and you can see how this is comparatively commercialised.

hey guys...greetings from the colonies.... yah Bruce is one of my all time favorites too...but here in the U.S metal is seldom heard on a typical radio station..i am an incorrigible headbanger and so our pop music bores me to tears ...thank goodness for the www..now its so much more open and easier to connect to good and new material...their stuff is often laced with historical allegories and with the possible exception of run to the hills, which paints a too simplistic a picture of the fate of the American Indian, its rather balanced and informative in its content...at any rate, thanks and UP THE IRONS!

Maiden write about History, books, films & life. Paschendale, The Trooper, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Aces High, Phantom Of The Opera, Alexander The Great etc etc there literally are too many to list tbh lol. Remember Maiden are still touring & are as big if not bigger now then they've ever been. Up The Irons.

O.K. Wilss and Jax , I have one for you. I don't think there should be any copyright issue, ( I hope not) this will knock your socks off. The song is called "Last Chance", by a band called "Shooting Star" the LYRICS HD version on you tube is the best. It is the original, with best sound. Important that you see that version, the others available are years later after some members passed and the band had changed. Those versions the talent and sound had faded. Great song with a great message as is all of "Shooting Star" songs. You will love this band. I promise you that. This is the start of good friendship. Love the touch of class and the way you evaluate good music. Be Well.

Maiden wasn't commercial as in Motley Crue or Other chart topping groups, for instance none of their singles charted in America, but the UK top ten at that time late 70's- early 80's often were topped by punk or metal acts that was mainly unique for the UK charts.

I think Wilss (and probably Jax too) would love other Iron Maiden songs with a little more progressive elements (especially including but not limited to their long epics) such as; Phantom Of The Opera Dance Of Death Blood Brothers Alexander The Great Rime Of The Ancient Mariner The Nomad Revelations Remember Tomorrow Sign Of The Cross The Clairvoyant The Clansman When The Wild Wind Blows Afraid To Shoot Strangers P.S: All album versions please because my priority is musical precision, instrumental clarity and general sound quality. I believe live performances are better after getting to know the song well enough.

There’s an alternative rock / goth pub that I sometimes go to in Brighton and on New Year’s Eve before its New Years they always play this song about a couple of minute to midnight.

As for whether such a song would still chart, the singles charts aren't remotely what they were like in 1984. However, their most recent album The Book of Souls charted at number 1 on the album charts of 24! countries (4th on the US Billboard 200 chart), so clearly they still weren't bereft of commercial appeal 35 years after the release of their debut album.

Great band. Run to the Hills, and The Trooper are very good from this group. I really think you need to check out Heaven and Hell from Black Sabbath. They Fathered all of the good British metal.

Fear of the dark (live at rock in rio) is the best version i know of. Iron maiden is better in live performances
