‘Bird of Prey’ the opening track from 1971’s Salisbury album, the first time I ever heard Uriah Heep on a hi-fi, David Byron’s voice soars to the heavens.

Great British song writer who wrote about 700 songs was from Uriah Heep in Ken Hensley. The man on the Hammond organ, slide guitar and singing too. Died a few days ago. 😭

R.I.P. Ken. I am Hammond player too and you are one of m top idols.

Short and sweet just like you said. David Byron (RIP) was a great singer and showman too. Gotta love that driving Hammond organ sound. How about ”The Spell” from the same album. Great track with slide guitar solo and nice choral.

Uriah Heep is terrific, some call them a poor man's Deep Purple but I don't see it. They have a clear identify of their own. They are still active today although with new members. Easy Livin comes off of the Demons and Wizards album which is a classic. Some of my other favorite songs from them are Lady in Black, Bird of Prey, Gypsy, Stealin', Traveler in Time, The Wizard, July Morning, Tears in My Eyes, and Come Away Melinda. There are so many great ones. These are all from the classic era but there are some more current songs worth checking out as well.

I agree, but Heep were Deep Purple's wannabe at the beginning. It is true. Even here Easy living is Purple's style especially hammond's parts. Also Look at your self has Purple's style. But it is okay, I love Heep, but people knows less about this great band, americans especially.

If you want something different from short and sweet, may I suggest Salisbury, their sweeping 16-minute epic from their album by the same name. A long listen, for sure, but it shows their range brilliantly, and features several blistering lead solos by Mick Box. As for Easy Livin', no one remarks about the exquisite bass line by the late Gary Thain. While not a great example of virtuosity, it is perfectly suited to this song, and clearly evident. I would say it is worthy of something that Paul McCartney might have come up with. Ken Hensley's Hammond organ is steaming throughout. It's too bad more bands didn't use organ because it can make a huge difference to a band's sound -- witness Afterglow by the Small Faces, You Keep Me Hanging On by Vanilla Fudge, House of the Rising Sun by the Animals, and every Deep Purple song ever done (I hope the church canonizes Jon Lord some day). This song is one of my favourite driving songs, along with Radar Love (Golden Earring), Already Gone (the Eagles), Highway Star (Deep Purple), and two songs by Canadian recluse rocker Aldo Nova, Heartless, and Heart to Heart.

Check out the song The Pilgrim. Epic heavy/operatic masterpiece. Way ahead of it’s time. They were an excellent band with some heavy songs with some slightly proggy leanings. And the singer, David Byron, was one of the very best singers ever - regardless of genre. The bassist, Gary Thain was also ridiculously good. Too bad they both died so young.

This is from the beginning of their Rock/Pop era. If you want to enjoy their incredible Progressive era, try some of the following. Gypsy, July Morning, Look At Yourself, Salisbury, Bird of Prey, Shadows of Grief, Tears In My Eyes (live versions), and Circle of Hands (definitely the Live version from UH LIve in 72.
@pathfinder12732 жыл бұрын
Sort of agree with you, but while they did add more rock/pop to their sound after Kerslake and Thain joined, they still did mostly progressive rock on Demons & Wizards and the Magician's Birthday. Sweet Freedom was a real swing toward rock/pop.

Their song, "Rain" has an enduring quality, featuring the vocals more than the band's energy for which they were more generally known, I suspect. I love y'all's accent. May I ask which part of the UK you reflect? It is awfully pretty. I live in Charlotte, North Carolina whose distant mountains have manglings deemed permanently indecipherable, so it's nice to hear it done well.

The 70:ies was great, UK explodeed with bands as Uriha Heep who are so underrated, the are as important and as good as Deep Purple but not as famous, they, together with Deep Purple, Led Zeplin, Black Sabbath and, also underrated, Nazareth, made rock to heavy metal
