Well, my Dad lied about his age to join the RAF a year early and became a tail-gunner in a Wellington bomber; possibly the most dangerous spot in the air; why? Because he came from a poor family and airmen got better food and pay than soldiers and seamen. Edit: ... and he's still alive to this day; turned 94 this year!

Not only about the Spitfire. It's about the fighter pilots of the RAF who were the thin red line between the Germans invading Britain. They needed air superiority to do this and the Luftwaffe had 4 times the number of planes that the RAF had. Two thirds of our planes were the slower Hurricanes, inferior in almost every respect but they could take a lot of damage. The RAF at this point consisted of Brit's, Canadians, Jamaican's, Poles and others. If you want to really understand it better I'd urge you to watch a movie called Reach For The Sky, it's a gripping view. PS, Churchill was a drunkard and a womaniser as well.

As for the "rolling turning diving, going in again" turning up in that documentary as well as the IM lyrics, I am sure Harris probably saw the same (or a similar) documentary (unless the documentary was released after 1984, then indeed, CHILLS) - I reckon he does his researching homework when writing these songs, which is why they're so detailed and the lyrics are in-depth but concise and succinct.

The Hurricane actually downed more German aircraft than the spitfire did, but the spitfire like you say was made an icon and kinda took the glory. Interestingly, the film you are showing in the small screen during your talk called the Battle of Britain was mainly focused on Hurricanes. They made many mock ups for the film, some were super basic cardboard, others were much more realistic made with a metal frame and fabric much like the real thing. One of these realistic ones was rescued by my father in the late 1990s and he fully rebuilt it from the ground up to become probably one of the most realistic replicas in the country. Even the cockpit, which for the films were empty was fully rebuilt using genuine parts. It took him many years with the help of a few others here and there.

An interesting thing about Steve Harris, the bass player, on every song he always played an eighth of a note ahead of everyone else. He said he does it just to keep every song in time.

Also Wolfkain, if you want the ultimate Iron Maiden collection, I highly suggest picking up the new 2015 remasters of the entire catalog. They were remastered first in 2015 for vinyl and then on CD starting in 2018. But they were initially restored from the analog tapes from the Abbey Road Archives in London. Then digitally remastered in the most modern way where they maintain the dynamics of the original recording. In other words NO LOUDNESS WAR that was prevalent on the 1998 remasters. So what you get is when the volume would dip for louder parts on the 98 remasters in order to maintain a steady volume level, these new 2015 remasters actually get louder in those parts like they were supposed to be. It sounds counterintuitive, but the Loudness War only increased the volume of quieter parts. Also the Steve Harris bass parts are much more punchier now. You find yourself strumming along with Steve in these songs.

American scientists/engineers sent a drill bit to the Germans the size of a human hair. The Germans sent it back with a hole drilled in it. Germany was the top of the heap back then. The spitfire was not fuel injected initially, the 109 was fuel injected and German pilots would use a negative G push over into a dive to escape knowing that the spitfire with its carburetor equipped engine couldn't follow

Apart from how awesome the song is, I have great respect for Iron Maiden's respect for history. Speaking as a dumb yank, a song like this has me contemplating the sincere resolve of the English people. For nearly a year they were the only major power to stand up against the axis powers while we in the states were still contemplating whether to get involved at all. Not just the tireless pilots he's singing about, going out again and again on seemingly endless sorties against the Luftwaffe, but the sheer stoic heroism of the citizens to face daily bombings and still carry on. From the fall of France and before to the end of the Battle for Britain and beyond, It is a testament to the strength of a people in the face of insurmountable odds.

The planes that were made during the whole of WW2, how they were used and the advancements that were made in the planes themselves and how to fight them is kinda awing. The Zero which was a rather cheap "paper" plane was used in the most devastating ways which made them something to fear. The Hellcat was the powerhouse of the prop planes and were even for a heavy plane powerful and fast. The Germans made Jets which were also some of the most feared because of the speed and maneuverability, it gave an advantage in the air but they could still be shot down but after many losses but it was luckily something that was too late in the war for them. Then the British spitfire as told by Wolf became a sign of hope for the British. Over all war is something that has the highest cost but also in a sad way gives such advancement to develop.
