As a spanish speaking person, I can say that at age 15 Iron Maiden was a mistery to me. All I wanted to know was what these guys were talking about, because I was taken away by their music. My grandfather gave an old english/spanish dictionary and that opened the door for me to a whole new world. I would read books, watch movies read history firstly thanks to Iron Maiden. I ended up becomming an english teacher so I can say that this band changed my life forever and will always have a very special place in my heart.

The story is that Ikaros and his father Daidalos where imprisoned by king Minos in the labyrinth of the minotaur, which they actually built. Daidalos made wings out of wax and they escaped by flying away, but Ikaros, enchanted by the miracle of flying, did not listen to his fathers advise not to fly high towards the sun. The wax off his wings melted and he fell to the sea and died. Great story of vanity!!! And great vid as always!!!!!

Cool exploration of a great metal song! I enjoyed you talking about history as well. I am curious though: have you checked the dating of the writing of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey compared to the writing of Genesis? My understanding is they were written down about the same time, around 500 bce. What is your thought?

YES!!! This is one of my all time fav Iron Maiden song’s!!! Bruce’s vocals & the harmonies, are crazy good!!! The mythos of Icarus is more than just a tragic story. It symbolises the enthusiasm and the larger than life attitude of youth, the feeling that you own the world and the desire to push limits further and further, sometimes with tragic concequences. Back in the 80's, I tried to get my high school History teacher to play Iron Maiden's "Alexander the Great" in class, in relation to something we were doing in class at that time, but he wouldn't go for it. But then, he was the same teacher who didn't know that THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI was a real thing, too, so, there's that...Ah, well. Man, in my early teens when I got into this band it was like joining a book club. I wound up reading 'Dune,' reading Egyptian myths, rereading Greek myths, watching 'The Duelists,' reading freaking Tennyson, random bits of history, even tracking down 'The Prisoner' on VHS a few years later, which was not easy in S. This is one of the greatest Iron Maiden songs and it’s not really guitar heavy. I mean don’t get me wrong, they got great riffs and solos. This song just doesn’t start out like the trooper or fear of the dark. The way they composed it they really wanted vocals and the amazing ability of Bruce to tell a story to come through over the actual instruments. I feel they did a great intro by starting to layer it with a decent rhythm to set up the experience. Very, very few singers/composers can make a composition such as this. Getcha pull!
@DRDINOMEOW3 жыл бұрын
So I might add a few comments to this as I am commenting as I watch it, but I do agree with her about the melodies. You can definitely hear in the back up singing, how the harmony is very traditional to what was being taught in the European style of music. I get a feel of the lead and back up being written In a form of counter point, I’d like to say 2:1… correct me if I’m wrong. Definitely very traditional!

It's a sensation you build and work on over time and you develop the coordination to do it with the exercises. Sometimes I even talked through the passaggio and my cousin was like why is your voice so bright lol? I was like its from singing man. My family even noticed how load I was and I didn't quite understand why this was happening and was quite scared for a couple of days lol. This is the one song that is left off the set list (2011 was the last time I heard it unt 2019).. show after show ... however the last show I saw in 2019 in South FL .. they played it and he killed it...oddly that was the second trip to South on that same tour ...and it was not on the set list the first time

I'm a sucker for good vibrato and I absolutely love how in time Bruces own backing vox harmonies are in chorus i.e., it doesn't sound like a "bunch of bulls" but the vibrato is perfectly in time in each of the voices. Btw. just a small musical notion of maidens Aces high, I've never heard a rock band to do so many modulations in a single song. I mean they modulate every time a part changes and even twice in verse and chorus. I bet that (I'm a gtr player, not a singer) it's also quite challenging for a rock singer, even though in jazz that is quite common.

Okay Ken, I have a completely different request than you’re used to. As a huge fan of amazing singers like Steve Perry, Walsh, etc, I would love if you would dissect Corey Taylor’s voice please. Specifically his voice in Slipknot. I know his “scream” has changed over the years but he gets compliments from everyone in the industry for never blowing his voice out. He pushed it and pushed it but yet he still has an unbelievably powerful voice. Can you do an isolated voice video on his voice and describe what he was doing in the early 2000’s compared to now? It’s obviously not anything you would ever want to teach in your course because we should NEVER sing like that. But his voice is an animal of sorts and i would love to hear your opinions!

Bruce is beloved by many metal fans as you know. But I think music fans in general, especially younger ones, don't really know him or appreciate him. The industry basically turned on all of the '80s music once grunge and alternative music dominated the scene. It's just now that some of those bands are starting to reemerge and tour. That said Iron Maiden has been one of those bands that have sustained in spite of the trends.
