Bruce is such an amazing talent. I loved how you described him as melodramatic because that's a perfect way to describe singers like Bruce, Halford, Freddy and Anne Wilson. Not just singing a song, but immersing yourself in it and telling the story using your voice to build drama, emotion and suspense the same way the instruments do.

Bruce wrote in his autobiography that for Harris, first of all, everything is in the rhythmic space, that the vocals are non-singing. Even so, he manages to tell a cool story. I love his tone. In his youth, he seems to be a lyric-dramatic tenor, but closer to 40 he was reclassified into a dramatic one. The timbre has become deeper and darker with a metallic tint. Great.

That was a most excellent analysis and demonstration of the behind-the-scenes studio workings with this icon of rock vocals! I'm not worried that my opinion of him will be degraded - on the contrary! I think much more of him, and instead of merely humanizing him and his vocals (which is wonderful), it (you) really brought attention to how he put the power of his entire being into his singing and vocals. Also...it really highlights the absolutely clever and even brilliant workings of the producers and engineers - even in the "old days"! Thanks, Ken...keep 'em coming! :-)

I always wonder if Bruce ever thought about any of this or if it just was there and then obviously got developed just through gigs. He had serious problems after the first two tours and they seemed to last until he had an unusual vocal rennaisance just before he left the band. His solo albums are astonishing and he's been singing better the last 20 years than he did on the Powerslave tour. Some have it and the rest of us try to get it I guess.

I know pretty much everything recorded gets compressed, but never realized how hard they compressed his vocals! The telltale breathing/pumping when he starts each line of the chorus give it away. Of course you don’t notice it with all of the music, but when you isolate it, it’s clear. If I was a betting man, I’d put my wager on it being an old tube driven LA/2A compressor (been over 20 years since I actually used one, but they do have their own signature)

They don't call him "The Air Raid Siren" for nothing. This song trips me out.
The hard part of the chorus is the Run.."TO" Long O or U I give a little more support at that spot and bring it forward almost vibrating the front teeth,Because he is open full voice right there and I don't like to disconnect between Run and To its harder for me to disconnect in that spot because the two words are so close.
