LOL!!! Maiden is extremely good at it, but if you can listen to metal from the 80's-90's and not notice it, you are not doing metal any justice. Metal is the counter-culture to the "barbie world, greed is good" illusion of the 80's-90's. Many see metal as a scene of hopelessness and despair, but it is exactly what slayer once said, "we put it in your face so you notice it and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT". Here is your problem, fix it!! Metal has more hope and desire for the world to be better than most other forms of music, and that's it's real power, to make you THINK.

I came back to rewatch this video months later after seeing a couple of the commentators say they think this was a negative reaction. This was anything but a negative reaction - certainly, it brought out the philosophical side in George and Ryan, and they definitely seemed to appreciate the poetry, skill, musicianship, songwriting, and artistry that went into the song, and found the whole to be beautiful, with the worst they could say about it being that it might be a bit dated, the subject matter not being not being to their taste at the time, and the song being something that might have to grow on them. I didn't realize it until I saw the reaction the first time, but Harris' lyrics, whether the song was contrived that way or not (I suspect not), actually do an excellent job of conveying the false courage and then all of the stages of grief the story's character would go through in the hours before death - you see elements of shock and panic, denial, anger, bargaining/reasoning, and depression in the way the character's words contradict what was said before, before settling on acceptance, before the character's life flashes before his eyes during the solos leading up to the death at the End.... Obviously, this reaction was early in their metal reactions career, and they'd basically reacted to only a limited selection of thrash before this, so I wonder if George and Ryan would be willing to come back and react to this song again some day, now that they've seen a wider range of metal, and have had the new perspective of some time and distance to re-review the song with?

I've listened to this song since 1990 and I've never heard anyone discuss the lyrics the way that you have. As I age though I contemplate the nature of God, life and death more often and you have really captured what I feel is the essence of a very real and necessary question that humanity has no doubt posed to itself since its beginning. Thank you Ryan and George for your thoughtful and intelligent insights.

Love Iron Maiden! In high school I was on home detention (don't judge me) and I couldn't go to the concert when they came to KC. A friend of mine went to the concert with her boyfriend telling her mom she was at my place babysitting with me. She asked me to cover if her mom called. I said sure...but you have to call me from a payphone as close to the stage as you can find and let me hear them live over the phone. She did it!!! It was great!!!!

The writing in this song is top quality, the instrumentation was also on par with the lyrics and personally I like the way it makes you think and discuss about what they are saying. I think I will seek out what other songs they have thanks to this Reaction so I can get used to them and more familiarize myself with the rock/metal genre. Great Job Guys.

Love watching you guys react metal and express your appreciation even if it's not your cup of tea. I listen to many genres (including country and metal back to back, go figure), and have my entire life. I still think, in this day and age of bubble gum and canned music generated for the masses and radio appeal, metal is the one remaining genre that mostly hasn't caved to commercial pressures. I also think it is where you find the most talented musicians, lyricists, composers, and arrangers in the industry. As many have already said, Iron Maiden is one of the "godfather" bands that influenced generations of future metal bands. Listen to some more of them. You will find that tge vast majority of their songs are based on historical events, literature, or biblical/spiritual subjects, and they were very adept at creating the imagery over which they laid out the story...hence the theatrical nature of their music. It may sound dated now, but at the time no one else had ever done anything like it. Many have emulated them, but no one has ever duplicated them. There is a reason they remain one of the most popular bands of all time.

I know why, but Maiden has always been my favorite band. “Dated” is absolutely true, which plays into why they’re my favorites. I’m a metal head white boy that grew up in the butt crack of Texas in the mid eighties, who married a black woman. I’ve tried and tried to show her the magic of Maiden and she just doesn’t get it. I love what you guys did with this. You put more thought into the tune than I ever did. You just got a new sub. 👍🏻

I think you're kinda jumping in the deep end with this one. This is definitely not the music you want to start out with for someone who's not much into "rock". I grew up on mainly hip hop/rap and r&b. I didn't listen to anything really that would fall under the rock category. I started with the bad stuff on the radio and worked my way up :) Start out with easily accessible stuff and maybe she will eventually grow to like Iron Maiden.
