“Ours is not to make reply, ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die.” This is supposedly the answer given to a Lieutenant begging his superior officer to call off the charge that was clearly suicidal (though it was likely added later as an embellishment). The Crimean War started over trade routes, essentially. The light brigade was an obsolete unit of cavalry who misunderstood an order given to them. They were meant to scout in some hills to locate artillery positions, but confusion about their orders led them into a killing field in front of the guns they were meant to scout. It would be Britain’s greatest military blunder until Gallipoli in WWI. The only thing cooler than metal is history! Keep rockin dude!

Maiden always based their songs on something. This one is after "Charge of the Light Brigade," where British soldiers on horse charged Russian cannons during the Crimean war. It marked the end of "old school," somewhat honerable warfare and the birth of the modern biggest-gun-wins age of war.
@johnforjustice23504 жыл бұрын

@@johnforjustice2350 LOL, same here. My HS English Lit teacher brought in some Maiden tapes and we listened/discussed in class the various songs derived from classic lit, like The Trooper, which we compared to Tennyson's work on this same subject. Back when school was cool, eh?

thomas harris I mean it’s always been about who’s gut the biggest gun. Think about the midevil wars where the biggest army won.
@thomasharris49424 жыл бұрын
Chris, this was a song based on a poem that was quite literally about the beginning of modern warfare of guns. For hundreds of years the biggest weapon on the field of battle was the armored knight on a horse. A close second was the longbow. And in this battle on one side you had men on horses, and on the other you had entrenched men with guns. The men with guns obliterated the men on horse. And this presaged how WWI would be fought.

The difference between iron maiden and most other metal/rock bands is that iron maiden have so deep and histotic lyrics and meanings while others usually sing about demons, satan, hell, parties and drugs, i absolutely loove iron maiden, my favorite band and number 1 in vocalism (is that the right word? Im not english) and number 1 instrumental
@Justin_GFM3 жыл бұрын
Daniel Berge Espe Honestly, the “Big 4” (Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer) have pretty deep lyrics as well. One thing I’ve always liked about Iron Maiden is that what it lacks in heaviness and aggression is made up for in “adventure”, as a comment on Reddit had said. Their songs take you through an adventure and their softer music makes it even better
@danielbergeespe16363 жыл бұрын
Justin i love metallica too, megadeth is ok, and not the biggest fan of the other two but this was about lyrics and iron maiden is easily number 1 there, and when it comes to instrumentals i love iron maiden there too but everyone got a different taste of what is great, when i feel like listening to some fat riffs or something more heavy i always go to metallica and i love them but personally i love iron maiden and lyrically i think you could agree with me that iron maiden is best but i havent heard every song from metallica so ofc you know that better than me probably

In the book World War Z, "The Battle of Hope. The battle itself lasted for hours, from one day through the night and then to dawn the next morning. Sound speakers played the song "The Trooper" by Iron Maiden loudly to lure zombies from all across the countryside via the chain swarm effect; the moans of these zombies attracted more zombies, and so on, until all of the zombies from a large swath of the region were descending on Hope. The music served the secondary purpose of getting the solders "pumped" and ready for battle, increasing morale (for the troops who liked "The Trooper" by Iron Maiden)."

The Trooper is based on the novel taught in all public middle/high school English classes, "The Charge Of The Light Brigade". It was a tiny war between the British Empire and the Russian Empire in the mid 19th century. The British Empire tried to seize the Crimea peninsula out of Russian hands because it sat on the Black Sea, the only ice free year around port the Russians occupied at the time. The British had the best skilled, trained, and armed soldiers in the world and even though the Russian's were poorly armed and trained they had the shear man power to repel the British invasion and won the tiny little war.
