The extra bubble over the eyes serves for aerodynamics for high speeds without risking visibility like how pilot helmets have bubble like visors. Correct, you won't find bugs at 30,000 feet, but you certainly will at lower altitudes cause who wouldn't want to take a scenic route every now and then if possible?
