Get yourself a good steering wheel puller setup. Those things are worth their weight in gold. I do not know how many mangled up steering wheels I have encountered following a steamboat mechanic with a big hammer.
@Ironcitygarage Жыл бұрын
We broke two of those so far, both snap on. When these are rust jacked this is the only option. Before the snap on ones broke they completely mushroomed the head of the spline stud as well

I would submit that first you never smack a steering shaft with a hammer as you immediastlet damage the threads. After all the nature of the mission is to use the original steering colum without damage. Using a steering wheel puller that is designed for that particular job is what you need even though you can use a harmonic style puller ( and by the way that type of puller you showed in your video is not manufactured by Snap On nor Mac nor Matco but by OTC (was Ottawatta;sp Tools Corp) I was a Mac Dealer in the early eighties and that particular puller was vendored through OTC. I would suggest that a shaft protector be used between the puller forcing screw and the steering shaft and of course these puller threads on steering wheels being just across from each other it is paramount to keep the puller straight There are shaft protectors that can go over the shaft and have dimple to keep the forcing shaft from walking off of the steering shaft. if the wheel is stubborn take your oxy-acetylene torch and using a small welding tip just heat a small portion of the steering wheel center right by at the splines to cherry red while applying force with the puller. One thing I do not do is to apply force with a wrench or a ratchet but apply force gradually with an impact wrench. What happens here is the rotational torque and the hammering effect of the impact wrench will help to shock the rusted and also tight connection between the steering shaft and the steering wheel. If you look at a steering shaft you will see the splines are tapered slightly to ensure a tight fit. Rust jacking is a condition where rust builds up between two pieces like frame hangers riveted to a frame and the rust builds up and spreads the two pieces apart. If this procedure fails then destroy the steering wheel but save the shaft. I know this is a long dissertation but a properly followed procedure can save a lot of headache and it really doesn't take that long. A no-no is to never beat on a steering shaft with a hammer, you just blew the mission of salvaging the part you needed. if you apply force with the puller and just cherry up a small point at the splines along with gradual impact action (doesn't have to be lug nut torque setting) You may even save the wheel.

Audio - audio - audio. May I suggest turning down the music - or turning up your narration. I find I'm turning up the volume when you're speaking, then turning it down during music and 'other things' - then I can't hear what you're saying - up-down-up-down, you get the idea. With respect :) P.S. - Industry standard for music and/or narration is -12db max level.

Who prepared the trucks for transport? Either the seller or buyer is responsible, not the driver. He has to assume these partial vehicles are safe for shipment..

I know if I were a transporter, I would take photos at every pickup I made documenting what was on a vehicle or wasn't on a vehicle. Now if the truck was documented and you received it without the bed you file a claim with the transportation company. I think under the rules the freight charges have to be paid but you file a claim against the transportation company for the loss of the bed. Would be best to require photos of the units when picked up to ensure that the parts don't get sold in transit. I kind of figured that, that was what happened. I tell you this that transport company would not get my business again. I am on your side and as a former owner-operator it pains me that there are crooked bastards out there. It puts a stain on this whole business.

In the beginning of the video it shows a video of the truck leaving the farm with bed on it
@billywird Жыл бұрын
Yes sir that is all you need. The driver of the transport should have called the transportation company and the police on this deal if the bed indeed had fallen off of the load or if someone had taken the bed off of the load say when the driver was on a break. People hauling these cars around for hire do not realize that they are subject to the same hours of service as other For Hire carriers under the hours of service, and also are subject to insurance claims just like other carriers. You definitely have a claim against the transportation company on this one. It was the driver's responsibility to immediately notify the transportation company "if the bed had actually fell" off of that truck. @@Ironcitygarage
