Ironhead Rescue: trades and topless bikes! The stretch to finish before Sturgis

Well we got a new (to us) 1980 Harley Davidson Ironhead Sportster on a trade and we do the initial checks on the motorcycle. From riding and testing transmission to finding out the whole thing needs rebuilt. And there is an update in the video on my 1985 Ironhead Sportster. Always wrenching riding and keeping it sketchy! The machine shop I am referring to in the video (sorry if I mispronounced the last name!) helped me out MAJORLY to fix my cylinders and heads is Corey Amburgy in Colorado Springs, CO 719-373-8763.

You have inspired me to buy a bike again, just picked up a mostly stock numbers and frame matching 1975 xlch sportster on marketplace for $2000, with 18,000 original miles, nobody that looked at it could start it, I got it started after it puked out a quart of oil from sitting a year got it home cleaned it up and runs and looks great I’m stoked, thanks for the inspiration.

It’s right hand shift and left hand brake which is kind of trippy all other info says it should be opposite for 75 but last vin # H5, all I’m going to change is get a solo spring seat and anS&S super E carb to change out the Bendix zenith, I’d send a pic but can’t on here maybe I’ll send it to your email.

Good morning 🌅, Sally husband a fat cat, 🐈, 😂, that is another nice sportster, it’s amazing how it still ran with that amount of wear inside on those cylinders, did you flush the bottom end out and replace or rebuild the oil pump, I was watching somebody wrenching on something last Wednesday and he mentioned your name, regarding the problem with oil pump, where it was not seating properly when you went to tighten the bolts up, it appears the gears were binding on part of the casework meaning the oil pump was shot, And had to have a new oil pump, I believe I still got problems with my deuce, the first thing is my headstock needs tightening up, as I can hear or knock when I go over bumpy ground, and I believe my compensator is on the way out, I have a funny noise coming from the primary site, which a bit of a bugger as I’ve just rebuilt it and didn’t realise there was something wrong with it, and I’ve been thinking about getting a ride on left like what you’ve got, But I’m getting very short on pennies , as I have got to spend a load of money on my Roof when they get round to repairing it or replacing it, I have bad storm damage from nearly 2 years ago, this is our quick the work gets done over in France, I believe there is something to do with my ex as a spanner in the works, That is another story, I hope it all goes well going to Sturgis, ride safe ride free, France.

That old Iron looked like it was running pretty darn good up and down the driveway. Then you tear down and see, holy cow! Looks like it's gonna be a bike riding adventure and stay in Sturgis. Hell yeah! Great trade and another Ironhead!?!? My 82 is back to square one... Was torquing everything down yesterday to prepare for the first start, only to have a chunk of the front cylinder head SNAP clear off well before I got to the bottom end of torque specs. 😑😑😑

@@ironheadsally Not as of yet... I'm still determined to get this ol girl back up and running! Found a REALLY clean set of heads locally, that have fresh cut valve seats, new valves, new seals, springs, guides, etc.... just have to wait until I can afford to drop the dough for em. And the guy is offering them to me for a killer price! Based on how little torque it took to break that section of the front head, I'd say that overheating issue got it WAY hotter than it thought it did and when I had it moving under its own power at one point that day, it started pouring and then I broke down... That cold rain on the hot cast iron probably caused the hairline crack that opened up the other night.

@@ironheadsally Not much else I can do but keep on trying... I got the primary and transmission apart and didn't see any signs of damage, so I've got hope for this motor yet! Going to thoroughly flush the system with oil a couple of times before put it back on the road, in hopes that any metal shavings that are floating around from that piston failure, will come right on out.

That sounded great. In about 1975 my dad took my to a little harley shop in Northumberland pa. I was 7. I can still remember looking at the fins on the engine. My mom bought him a leather jacket for Christmas. I still have the jacket. Lost dad in 2005. Wish he could have seen my harleys i started to buy in 2012.

Hey Sally hope you are all doing good. As for the trade the phrase "Yankee Trader" comes to mind the first thing that caught my attention was the shotgun pipe on the rear cylinder and the drag pipe on the front... seems like a mismatched set of pipes, second thing was those jugs and how shiny they looked and then I almost choked when your Husband showed you the scoring on the pistons. Looking forward to seeing your 85 back up and running down the road again.

It needs a few things. Maybe I will see you next year for my first Sturgis ride. I have never been there. I would really like to ride to see the Grand Canyon. When I moved from California, I didn't have the time to see it, nor the Salt Flats in Utah. I would like to visit before I move out of CO Springs though. I need more cool people in my life. (Also, it was nice to hear some Zombie theme music with that chopper)

Its V-Twin kit from j&p, a quick fix. And yes it comes with fresh cylinders and pistons, the rings did need to be fitted and checked all the measurements were good and in spec 😁

The ironhead heads are easier than newer aluminum heads, but taking soft wire wheel attachments on an electric drill. Being careful around the valves and valve seats not to scratch em, but he lapped the valves too just to ensure a good seat.
