My mother, who is 86, recalls her Uncle Jimmy and wife Elsie, living in a railway cottage, I assume off a siding, near Newcastle, in the Dundrum direction. She stayed with him and his wife when she was about 10 as Elsie was expecting at the time. She mostly recalls the marigolds outside and that he used to bring the train to the bank above the house for her to get in, shunt the train back to the station where she got out and got the shopping. Any further info or pictures would be very much appreciated.

Getting behind the wheel of a car these days is a nightmare. To much traffic on roads. Pity most of the railways in rural areas especially in N Ireland were closed.

Too true Des, the motorways are making the train a less attractive option in recent times. It's going to take considerable investment to make the majority of the network competitive timewise.

So stupid of them to close the railways. I’m just glad the Harcourt Street line has been revived as the Luas.

The Irish pay punitive car taxes today. As an Englishman I was shocked in 2018 to see a 1.6 litre Peugeot Estate car with a tax disc paying over 500 Euros. You are subbing the Trucks and your Gangster Politicians have done this to you!

Er no, Irish companies built it and if you mean closing down much of the network, the exact same thing happened in Britain.
