I played this song on my guitar at Christian youth group when I was 12...one of the teachers walked up to me and slapped the shit out of me. I didn't read the room. Bruce's scream in this song...ICONIC! Almost as good as Wet Leg's scream.

I left alone, my mind was blank I needed time to think To get the memories from my mind What did I see? Can I believe? That what I saw that night was real and not just fantasy? Just what I saw in my old dreams Were they reflections of my warped mind staring back at me? 'Cause in my dreams it's always there The evil face that twists my mind and brings me to despair Night was black, was no use holding back 'Cause I just had to see, was someone watching me? In the mist, dark figures move and twist Was all this for real or just some kind of Hell? Six six six, the number of the beast Hell and fire was spawned to be released Torches blazed and sacred chants were praised As they start to cry, hands held to the sky In the night, the fires are burning bright The ritual has begun, Satan's work is done Six six six, the number of the beast Sacrifice is going on tonight This can't go on, I must inform the law Can this still be real, or just some crazy dream? But I feel drawn towards the chanting hordes Seem to mesmerize, can't avoid their eyes Six six six, the number of the beast Six six six, the one for you and me I'm coming back, I will return And I'll possess your body and I'll make you burn I have the fire, I have the force I have the power to make my evil take its course

LYRICS [Spoken intro: Barry Clayton] Woe to you, o'er Earth and Sea For the Devil sends the beast with wrath Because he knows the time is short Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast For it is a human number Its number is Six hundred and sixty six [Verse 1: Bruce Dickinson] I left alone, my mind was blank I needed time to think to get the memories from my mind What did I see? Can I believe that what I saw That night was real and not just fantasy? Just what I saw, in my old dreams, were they Reflections of my warped mind staring back at me? Cause in my dream, it's always there The evil face that twists my mind and brings me to despair YEAH! [Verse 2] The night was black, was no use holding back Cause I just had to see, was someone watching me? In the mist, dark figures move and twist Was this all for real or just some kind of hell? [Chorus 1] 666 the number of the beast Hell and fire was spawned to be released [Verse 3] Torches blazed and sacred chants were phrased As they start to cry, hands held to the sky In the night, the fires burning bright The ritual has begun, Satan's work is done [Chorus 2] 666 the number of the beast Sacrifice is going on tonight [Guitar solo: Dave Murray] [Guitar solo: Adrian Smith] [Verse 4] This can't go on, I must inform the law Can this still be real, or just some crazy dream? But I feel drawn towards the chanting hordes They seem to mesmerize, can't avoid their eyes [Chorus 3] 666 the number of the beast 666 the one for you and me [Verse 5] I'm coming back, I will return And I'll possess your body and I'll make you burn I have the fire, I have the force I have the power to make my evil take its course This song was the band’s second single from their 1982 album. It was influenced by the 1978 horror movie Damien: Omen II, which is about the 13-year-old Antichrist. It is one of Iron Maiden’s most famous and one of heavy metal’s most recognizable songs. Basically, this song is about a dream. It’s not about devil worship. -Steve Harris The song starts with a quote from the Bible, read by British actor Barry Clayton; the first lines from Revelations 12:12 and the last three from Revelations 13:8. The band wanted the horror film actor Vincent Price to read this intro, but he wanted more money than they were willing to pay. During the recording of the album, there were rumors floating about that supernatural occurrences had been going on in the studio, such as lights flipping on and off, strange noises and visions of Satan. This was used as evidence that Satan and the Antichrist had a hand in making this. Many preachers and enemies of rock music were led to believe Maiden were Satanists, because of the song’s title. Steve Harris called them mad. They completely got the wrong end of the stick. They obviously hadn’t read the lyrics. They just wanted to believe all that rubbish about us being Satanists. Bruce Dickinson’s high-pitched scream at the end of the intro was a result of producer Martin Birch forcing the band to replay the intro several times. Dickinson became so fed up with the constant repeats that he emitted the scream out of frustration, and it fit so well that the band decided to keep it. "They completely got the wrong end of the stick. They obviously hadn’t read the lyrics. They just wanted to believe all that rubbish about us being Satanists. Basically, this song is about a dream. It’s not about devil worship." Steve Harris, composer of the song, about people complaining about the supposed satanic meaning of the song.

Fun fact: the scream bruce dickinson lets out in the intro of the song is a result of the producer constantly having them do different takes, and in this one bruce was so fed up he let out a howl with so much frustration pushing it he has never been able to properly recreate it.

Yeah, Martin Birch got him to keep singing the first two lines for about four hours (even though he actually stopped recording after about the 3rd take lol) to get Bruce pissed off. I grew up in this era, and when this album came out it scared the crap out of 95% of the people I knew. I was awe struck. And if I had to pick one song, that definitively etched Iron Maiden's place in rock history, The Number Of The Beast would have to be it. Bruce Dickinson's masterful vocals, the incredible guitar work, the drums, and the amazing stage show had a hypnotic effect on anyone that was fortunate enough to see them live, in concert. It has been 40 years now, and it's an experience I will never forget. There are no other bands like Iron Maiden, and there never will be.

When I was a kid we visited my great aunt one day and she said to me ‘go and visit your cousin’. He was 16 and i was 9 or so. I went to his room and he and his buddies were like ‘wtf are you doing here?’ And I said ‘uh your mom said I could hang out’. ‘Oh ok that’s cool,’ was his response. And they were listening to this song - I’d never heard anything like it and was instantly hooked. It’s funny how music does that. I remember that like it was just yesterday and here we are about 40 year later. Anyway my aunt passed away a couple of years ago, my cousin and I are still in touch and i mention this memory to him occasionally and he laughs and says ‘good thing you didn’t catch us smoking weed’. My first concert, Iron Maiden opening for Judas Priest October 13th 1982 Pittsburgh Civic Arena, Eddie came out on stage and Priest had Halford ride that Harley out on the stage. The early 80's was the greatest time to have been a teenager in high school and I count my lucky stars that it was my high school experience, it started out with Back In Black being released in the summer of 80, it was just starting to heat up on radio when my first year of high school started in 80 (my school had 10th through 12th for high school) along with REO Hi Infidelity, over the next 3 years we had John Cougar American Fool, Maiden Number Of The Beast, Priest Screaming For Vengeance, Sammy Hagar Standing Hampton, ZZ Top El Loco and Eliminator, Billy Squire Don't Say No, Def Leppard High n Dry and of course Pyromania, and I saw all of them in concert, and that isn't counting the one or two hit wonder bands (most of which were better than today's big acts) like Zebra, Krokus, Quiet Riot (saw all them opening for the bigger acts), Tommy Tuo Tutone, The Greg Kihn Band and some older names that were still around putting out good music like Steve Winwood and the punk movement that was still there with bands like The Clash and Devo (whatever you classify them as) along with a few others I know I'm missing, yea I feel lucky that I was a high schooler in the early 80's before crap I mean rap music caught on, before the image that everyone who wasn't there associates with the 80's took hold, the early 80's was more an extension of the late 70's (without Disco of course, which was one of the things that made it so great). I sure do feel bad for kids in high school in this day and age, walking through metal detectors on the way into school, security with guns all over the place, a big chain link fence built around the property, they look more like prisons than they do high schools.

[Spoken intro: Barry Clayton] Woe to you, o'er Earth and Sea For the Devil sends the beast with wrath Because he knows the time is short Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast For it is a human number Its number is six hundred and sixty six [Verse 1: Bruce Dickinson] I left alone, my mind was blank I needed time to think to get the memories from my mind What did I see? Can I believe that what I saw That night was real and not just fantasy? Just what I saw, in my old dreams, were they Reflections of my warped mind staring back at me? Cause in my dreams, it's always there The evil face that twists my mind and brings me to despair YEAH! [Verse 2] The night was black, was no use holding back Cause I just had to see, was someone watching me? In the mist, dark figures move and twist Was all this for real or just some kind of hell? [Chorus 1] 666 the number of the beast Hell and fire was spawned to be released [Verse 3] Torches blazed and sacred chants were phrased As they start to cry, hands held to the sky In the night, the fires are burning bright The ritual has begun, Satan's work is done [Chorus 2] 666 the number of the beast Sacrifice is going on tonight [Guitar solo: Dave Murray] [Guitar solo: Adrian Smith] [Verse 4] This can't go on, I must inform the law Can this still be real, or just some crazy dream? But I feel drawn towards the chanting hordes They seem to mesmerize, can't avoid their eyes [Chorus 3] 666 the number of the beast 666 the one for you and me [Verse 5] I'm coming back, I will return And I'll possess your body and I'll make you burn I have the fire, I have the force I have the power to make my evil take its course

Dude, the song played in DFW when that happened was fucking "closing time." I mean, it was an alt station, so they didn't have the balls to play something like Iron Maiden, but then again, they just simply merged with the local rock/metal station, so I guess they weren't as bitter. WIsh they would have kept "It's the end of the world as we know it" playing more as it sounded a lot more ballsy. And by the same thing, I meant yah, fuckin Christian music replaced that station. But luckily, they changed it after Christmas at least to an 80's station. I think an alt station got added elsewhere so thankfully, DFW still has a solid rock/metal station. Well, solid by today's radio rock standards I guess. And realize it's Texas, so it easily could have remained a Christian station with the rock station taken over by alt. SO MANY people would of RIOTED including me.

You got to be shitting me, I’m just 3 years older than this album, it’s been out as long as Iv been alive it seems impossible when you really think about it that they could create such unique still sounding modern heavy metal as it sounds as new today as it always has done to me it still sounds new & fresh it amazes me they created something that (it’s hard to explain) it sounds as if it had only been released at most 20 years ago if that, the style & sound is still used today in heavy metal, I remember in 90’s my best mate getting me into these I was into Oasis, Travis. Ocean Colour Scene. Paul Weller. Blur. The Verve. Charlatans. The Seahorses. James. Lightning Seeds. Cast. Suede. Space. Republica. Cardigans. Garbage. Catatonia. The Corrs. The Cranberries. Sheryl Crow. Alanis Morrisette. The Bluetones. The Eels. Radiohead. Manic Street Preachers. Pink Floyd. The Who. The Hollies. The Beatles. Then my mate turning me on to this, it opened my mind and told me anything was possible if you had enough passion but I struggled to find my voice back then trying to write songs to stuff he would cine up with in guitar as my voice couldn’t do metal and I’m ok with that, would I love to write metal, he’ll yes but my voice is more suited to punk/blur style/Lynyrd Skynyrd rock ballads so at least he gave me hunger to learn guitar through these bands as I wanted to write riffs like this but in my key and less metal for my voice and more rock ballad proving that you really do have to have, one hell of a voice in a natural high key, mine is more suited to key of C & G where as metal like this your voice naturally needs to be in A or D and I remember seeing an article where along with Manic Street Preachers Iron Maiden telling folk, young writers, if you need guitar lessons give up now, so I taught myself after work at ASDA I’d go back to my fiancés at time (Michelle) and just fiddle with two chords at tgst time I didn’t even know they were called chords but from fiddling in trying out new ideas just from two chords finger licking to strumming I bought iron maiden, Metallica (as I fucking adored Reloaded) tablature books and soon it just came natural to me like s duck to water I couldn’t believe it (the lad who gave his first electric red fender away Christmas box at about 10 years old away for a Sega Master System lol) to being able to play these songs then turned to Beatles as it was obvious my voice wouldn’t fit with Key of A power chords then quickly formed a band, started writing epic tunes, Punk/Suede style Rock ballads to having two lads that were just part timers, they only ever wanted to be part timers so when we got signed, whilst playing at local fair, they bloody freaked out and did not want to be in full time band as they were nurses in training and thats how they turned out (I say good for them, they got England through a Pandemic) but left us up shit creek withoot a bloody paddle, so I turned out to writing songs for other bands and found out I was brilliant, ace, epic at hearing just half of a sing by a band to be inspired to write even better songs for tgen I only needed to hear their style a little so I could go from country & western to Pink Floyd to Epic Rick ballads, the easiest style to write to for me was Mumford & Sons Style don’t know if that’s because my actual family name my ancestors came from Scotland and I only live about 25 miles from Border but point I’m getting at is, if you want to be an epic songwriter just because you can’t sing to a certain style or maybe you struggle to understand their style, listen to ss fkn many different styles as you can because then when your humming away to a sing your writing on guitar, lyrics will pop out the air from nowhere leaving you thinking I didn’t just write that, it’s impossible, I couldn’t have come up with those lyrics, well it is, listen to as many styles as you actually love, if you love it, listen to it I love everything from The Carpenters, 60’s, 70’s to Gloria Estefan to Metallica and Pearl Jam to Oasis to Travis to Iron Maiden they gave me hunger to learn guitar so I could write epic riffs, intro riffs, chorus riffs, bridge riffs etc. if you love it, blast it and fkn live it, as my motto I have tattooed on my arm says on a cross, Imagine it Dream it Believe it Live it

This is THE song that turned me from Southern Rock to Metal in 1983, in all of 5 minutes, literally. Seriously. THIS SONG. Since then I've seen Maiden live 15 times, from '83 to '19. Up The Irons!!

True story, I was 9 years old and was in Sam Goody when I saw this album cover. I was with my friend and his Mom. I HAD TO BUY IT. Came home and played the tape. After hearing this song, I screamed for my Mom to come Listen to the intro. As she listened, she pulls the tape out and smashes it on the ground and said this is devil's music!! After hours of crying, I knew Iron Maiden was my band for life!!! This was in 1985, and to this day they still blow my mind. Pantera is a close second!!

I think the main thing we can all take from this is people from pasts... are way more hardy and badass then this millenia. Medieval times + the black death. Vikings, Pirates, Knights, Samurais, Ninja. WW1 + the great influenza at the same time! Way, way more hardy than humans now.

Woe to you, oh Earth and Sea, for the Devil sends the beast with wrath, Because he knows the time is short... Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast For it is a human number, Its number is Six hundred and sixty six." I left alone, my mind was blank. I needed time to think, to get the memories from my mind. What did I see? Can I believe that what I saw that night was real and not just fantasy. Just what I saw in my old dreams Were they reflections of my warped mind staring back at me? 'Cause in my dreams it's always there The evil face that twists my mind and brings me to despair The night was black, was no use holding back 'Cause I just had to see, was someone watching me In the mist dark figures move and twist Was all this for real, or just some kind of hell? 666 the number of the beast Hell and fire was spawned to be released Torches blazed and sacred chants were praised As they start to cry hands held to the sky In the night the fires are burning bright The ritual has begun, Satan's work is done 666 the number of the beast Sacrifice is going on tonight This can't go on I must inform the law Can this still be real or just some crazy dream? But I feel drawn towards the chanting hordes They seem to mesmerise, can't avoid their eyes 666 the number of the beast 666 the one for you and me I'm coming back I will return And I'll possess your body and I'll make you burn I have the fire I have the force I have the power to make my evil take its course
