In the early 90’s I was a US submariner and a bunch of us where Ironman watches with the indigo backlight. They were perfect for checking the time when the control room was rigged red for periscope depth. In fact, so many of us wore them that one of my shipmate’s told his wife about it, and since she worked in PR she pitched it to timex. A few months later they ran full page ads of a bunch of guys standing on a submarine in the dark with their wrists glowing blue. I remember the copy being super cringy (something about “lights out drills”) but it was still pretty cool.

Before the Ironman there was the Timex Atlantis, a steel bodied digital that had the same-ish screen display. I bought several of them, finding it easier to buy a new watch than getting the battery changed. I even gave a few away as gifts. Had one glued to the instrument cluster of a Honda Motorcycle for a few years too!

I recently bought the Ironman for $50 Canadian; I've had a GW-5000u for quite some time. The Timex's buttons are way easier to use. I don't love the skinny fonts, but the Timex dial is surprisingly gorgeous to look at. The screen background is cleaner, the numbers are WAY bigger. For just seeing the time while you're in the gym (what I use the Timex for), Timex wins hands down. I don't love the Timex band as much as you; it's a very hard plastic that's not very comfy. I do like the keeper though. There's something attractive about the Timex that you can't see in a KZbin video... it has a very interesting depth to the dial, while the Casio's is one-dimensional and shallow. The Casio looks a lot like it's 80's ancestor; the Timex has evolved into something completely different. When I bought the Ironman, I just wanted something for the gym that I could sweat all over, allow to get bumped, and not care about too much, because it didn't cost me anything. But I've been surprised by how much I like it... they did a really great job of creating a very nice looking and super usable beater watch. I'd recommend it without hesitation. In Canada, the Casio 5600 is also more than twice the cost of the Ironman, which would be a big factor in making a recommendation. Packaging is a strange category. You throw it away 2 minutes after you buy the watch. Who cares if it's in a chest or a paper bag? Great video about real world watches as always!! 🧡🔥⌚ And best voice on KZbin!

Good job Jody, but i think you missed a huge part of the backlight. The Ironman gets a 10 for backlight due to night mode! Hold down the light button for 3 seconds and a little crescent moon shows up. While in night mode a push of any button turns on the Indiglo for 3 seconds. The G Shock light is ok, but try to change your alarm or timer settings in the dark. It's a pain with the G Shock, but super easy with the Timex night mode. I don’t know how so many reviews that mention Indiglo skip over night mode. Sometimes I have to work in the dark. Night mode is the reason I keep buying Ironman watches even though i have 3 solar G Shocks with Multiband 6. I always wear an Ironman to work. To be honest, though I suspected (correctly) which watch was going to cross the finish line first, I was really routing for the Timex. I think I, personally, would have rated the Timex higher in the "Brand " category by a point at least. Growing up in the 70's, Timex was THE affordable watch. My first watch as a boy was, in fact, a navy blue dialed Timex hand winder, similar in appearance to every other watch I had, up until that point, ever seen. The TV commercials were ubiquitous, the tag line still resonates in the zeitgeist 40 years later, and, as a bonus, the brand seems to be having a bit of a mini Renaissance lately while G-Shock is releasing grotesquely expensive special editions of watches they had in their catalog for decades. Having said that, though, the 5600 is just a better looking accessory than the Ironman, in my opinion, at least.

The most amusing part for me is that when I was involved in triathlon (I only did sprint distance ones but had many friends who were Ironman-distance triathletes. I even worked at a tri store for a couple of years) and triathletes are big time gadget heads. But I never knew anyone who used a Timex Ironman watch. It was all about Garmin and Suunto. I do wonder how much $$$ World Triathlon Corp. has made from that Timex license. FYI Jody...if you find the right triathlon (one with a pool swim instead of open water) you can "walk" the pool instead of swimming it. I know, its cheesy...but if you have the desire to do one and doubt your swim skills don't let that hold you back! :)

I think the Casio is undeniably a better watch and don't have much of a problem with that, although I really think the branding category needs some clarity. Maybe it's a regional thing and I'm out of line, but the number of Timex watches in this world is outrageous. Even when I was a kid (I'm 46 now) every single old guy wore a Timex and it's not much different now. Now these old non-watch guys have sock drawers or night stands full of old Timex watches from every period of their life. Every TV show back in the black and white TV days were sponsored by Timex. Even in the 80s, me and my friends mostly had a Timex model. (although there were a few casios around that we might have honestly liked more) So I guess it depends on how you're looking at it. If it's digital vs digital, I get it. But if it's a brand-wide, real-world popularity contest and we're looking at the whole history, it's truly not even close. That all being said, yeah. The Casio is totally better.
@marcelovasconcellos60672 ай бұрын
Yes very regional. I’d like a Timex, I really would, I’m of the age that the Ironman was really desirable in my late teens to early 20s. But they were and still are so expensive. Result even now, when I get the itch, I go and check an Ironman’s price and for the money there always are 3 or 4 better priced Gs, even of the more modern and feature rich variety. Growing up lots of us had Casios, Timex were few and far between. And the older folk here didn’t have Timex either. My sensation is the opposite of yours, Casio is ubiquitous and worldwide, Timex is heavy in some markets, rare as hen’s teeth in others.
@daveglarner21382 ай бұрын
@@marcelovasconcellos6067 That's interesting to think about. I get it though, and absolutely believe you. I think it's easy to get caught up in your own life experience and not understand how it is elsewhere. Especially back then before the Internet started tying us together. I had the Timex watches because they WERE the less expensive ones.......with the exception of the f91w anyway. We'd wear them in the yard at recess, pressing buttons that made beeping sounds and pretend we could control the planes that flew by with them.

I use the Ironman as my eyes are a little older and I can read the display of the Ironman on a run. I’m not sure the button below the face is actually two separate buttons - I just press in the middle to start and record splits as I run. I also like that the two times zones can be set to 12 or 24 hours independently. You can also choose if the larger display is used for elapsed time or split time in the Chrono. Great running watch IMHO. How about the Ironman being worn by a US president. The G-shock square, however, is a better-looking watch.

So it technically can be an excellent time travellers watch . 3) you can add the casio g 5610 bull bar onto the timex too , if you just want to mess around

I bought my current Ironman in 2007 and it is used outdoors and in the ocean several times a week...........I find the battery lasts 4.5yrs.........so after 17yrs I am pretty pleased with it. I paid AU$45 Aussie for it. If it ever dies I'll buy another Ironman.

This is like Stallone vs Schwarzenegger in the 80's. Today we love them both.

Casio buttons much to difficult to press. I had to remove some of the case to operate the light button!

The buttons on the Timex are easier to use than the Casio.

Casio does offer a large time display in the form of the W-96H, though it isn't a G-Shock

I really wanna see the watch that scores better than a G-Shock for toughness after watching this. Solid video Jodi

This is like asking me which of my two sons I love better. Well that’s simple. It’s the Casio. 😆. I think they are both great and pretty equal but Casio is the better brand IMO. Thanks for the fun comparison!

I often think aftermarket support is something worth considering, in which case Casio takes it. I know I can get onto eBay or Aliexpress and put a good quality OEM or 3rd party bezel and strap for a G-Shock but I’m not sure that’s the case for the Timex?

The buttons are so much easier to press on the ironman. Would be nice to go over which one is it easier to set timers on? Do they support seconds e.g. 90second timer.
