That car is lookin' better and better with each episode. I'm a big old movies buff and Matt's haircut is strait out of a 50's movie with hot rod punks in it. Turned up jeans, white tee shirt with a cigarette pack in the rolled up sleeve and a cigarette crooked above his ear. Yuppers, he's got the perfect period hair cut. I used to have pictures of my favorite Uncle from the 50's looking like that when he had a hot rod and a Harley. Depending on weather and the girl he was with he'd drive what he felt like. Just talked to him yesterday. Next time I'll try to get some stories out of him about that time in his life.

I don't like "patina" cars, but in the hot rod world you should do what you like. I watch this channel because I enjoy watching the process and your skill in bringing old hot rods back to life. Stay true to yourself.

You talk about the process being like an art project. You are correct. You must take an artistic position when building a hot rod. A lot of my car friends are artists by trade, myself included. I used to roll the car out in the driveway when I was building it and stare at it. My neighbours thought I was crazy, until I explained the process of building a car from various other ones , and the challenges that go with it.

Still my favorite build of yours over the years, and so glad you've taken the path of a sensitive preservation with it. It absolutely oozes history and character, and is a seriously important piece of hotrod history kept in its original form. I remember thinking it was like something out of Indiana Jones up on that fantastic lift when you first discovered it, and the journey of uncovering its story along the way has only added to its charm. As someone that works in the museum sphere and has an academic background in archaeology, I really can't fault you on any preservation decision you've had to make thus far. Great work!

Thank you so much! I really do try and explain this preservation idea to people as the same idea as done in museums with ancient artifacts. Clean up what is dirty and only replace what has been totally destroyed. A mummy isn’t nearly as interesting when “restored” to what they looked like when alive.. we want to see them as found in the tomb.

I get your point, but mummies were never alive in the first place or they would have made strong objection to the mummification process!

I very much identify with the ITG thought of breathing life back into these cars in a way that is sympathetic to what their owners originally wanted them to be, but with the sands of time slowed somewhat. 🙂 Keppup the magnificent work that ITG do. 👏

You guys are doing a great job. I've noticed more old cars are being made mechanically sound and preserved. Also keeping it original is more cost effective, than a full restoration. You are the one who paying for these cars not them.

I agree Matt, to me preserving the car is important. Cars in the day were built on a shoe string budget not built into a shiny glossed car with a billet parts off the shelf items . They made do with what was at hand. Keep up the good work.

The gas tank and filler panel look real good. Matches the look you are going for. I myself believe certain found Hot Rods need to be preserved as part of Hot Rod history. How do you teach the young guys coming up into the hobby without examples of what was long ago when you couldn't buy certain parts in a store. Your channel shows us with elbow grease and some hand tools you can work on an old car and have fun safely. At the end of the day, you are now a participant not a spectator. This hobby is very addictive. Gas in the veins of all of us. God Bless. Love you guys. Be Safe.

You own the car, do what you want with it. I think it looks great, I like you're approach. You're preserving the car as is, it can always be redone again later if some one wants. Seems to me that the "make it perfect" crowd is great @ commenting but rarely offer to actually buy the cars they object too.

Another note from N.E. Back in the day (late '50's) a scrap of memory came back. I remember our body shop paint supplier (Providence Lacquer & Supply) explaining that there were actually 9 shades of black. Now times have changed but maybe? Well done done "antiquing" . I am a furniture restorer and use the same technique often. Nice job, good luck.

Nice, Matt! My two cents - a car you're enjoying shouldn't sit still long enough for folks to get that close anyway. And I wouldn't worry about visible scuff marks. You'd get those anyway from years of washing and wiping down a car. But, good job! I like the "used and enjoyed" look. Hell, I've got a 2015 Challenger and I don't even wash it. I do tend to keep my interiors spotless tho.

Period correct is the way to go. I like both beautiful pristine shiny hot rods and patina. I’m going through a period correct 1971 Honda “chopper” not really my style. But it’s worth preserving to honor its original owner who now resides in a nursing home. Just seems like the right to do. Keep up everything your doing. Old fan.

If you have ever used Formby's furniture refinisher you know laquour just melts with the right chemical. When I restored some furniture with it I let it soften and then blended it into the bare spots to even the finish out. Finishing it "shitty" will definitely get it on the road 3to 4 times faster than restoring it to a nice finish. Especially black. Can't wait to see it tooling around.

What a mind you have Matt, what a beautiful job on the gas tank cover. I looked on. Eastwood’s website for scotch bride pads and was surprised to see the green one was the only one they have. The green one is generally the coarsest one there is and if it leave any scratches you may consider checking out 3m’s red medium cut or gray fine cut scotch Brite pads. They have a selection on their website.
