Matt You are right that back in the day we used what ever we could get our hands on to make a hot rod better. In the mid 1970's I was working on a 1940 Pontiac 2 door and needed to get a steering box that didn't have play in it so I went to the junk yard and got a 1965 GTO steering box and a 1966 2 plus 2 steering shaft and installed them on my 1940 pontiac with the original steering wheel. I also had to source a gas tank, back bumper and headlight switch from the junk yard ( I was in the Air Force and didn't have a lot of money) but I had a nice cruser when I was done. Thanks for your you tube channel! Even us old guys can learn new skills.

Sounds about right! I like to remind people of this stuff when working on these cars and embrace the quirkiness of the oddball parts they used. It's the nice part about it being a hot rod and not a factory-correct restoration!

Awesome video Matt. I've been spending quite a bit of time with my old frame. Fun to try and figure out why there are holes in certain places from hot rodding over time. I also decided to think ahead a little and put some 3" tube in my cross members as an exhaust pass through. That seems to be a problem with the old hotrods getting an exhaust under the floor. Maybe I'll use them, maybe someone 80 years from now will be happy I did it :)

20:01 Like the different engine mounts, maybe there was another steering box that needed the clearance. Or the box had to be moved out to give clearance to one of the engines installed. 31:10 That's surprising you said that about gas welding. TIG (to me) is the same technique , heat till a puddle forms and add filler rod.

For the three bolts that hold the steering box through the frame rails, how about turning up three bungs/ spacers to be inserted and welded in place? They could be made with the spacer length incorporated, so no stacks of washers or loose spacers would be used. It would clean up those big ugly holes, look better, be stronger, and easier to assemble. The frame is looking nicer all the time.
@IronTrapGarage4 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of a similar idea except making a boxed-in spacer type section that would get welded into the frame so it is a broader area than just those narrow little spacers. Either way I'll be doing something like that but I really need to get the body in place to double check I like where/how they had the steering box sitting. Never took notice before. Great idea!
