When the actors told the joke, they could hear the audience and let the audience ride it out... then pick up from their next line. Then one day they went big budget and switched to canned laughter. The whole show lost it's charm despite going for bigger and flashier stories and FX... Then they switched back, and the actors breathed a sigh of relief. They had the audience back to gauges their work off.
