What's particularly interesting about these guys is that Irukandji syndrome is almost certainly an unintended side effect from the jellies' point of view. It's useless for hunting OR meaningful defense...the onset is simply too slow. It's something in our bodies reacting in some very strange and potentially catastrophic ways to a venom that is otherwise quite mild.
@LimeTimeHD8 жыл бұрын
We can create body armor that can stop rifle rounds, but why cant we create a body suit to protect against jellyfish stings?
@LeatherCladVegan7 жыл бұрын
We can (if that's even a serious question). Of course we can. We can build tank armour that stops 155mm High-explosive anti-tank rounds. We can create chain-mail wet-suits that defend the wearer from shark bites. The problem is that we can't yet make them practical, and even if we could, we would not be able to make them affordable, as that would require many people to buy them, and most people want to enjoy swimming freely without wearing chain-mail and a full wet-suit. Technology like graphene, carbon nanotubes, etc, might change that one day... We'll see.
@LeatherCladVegan7 жыл бұрын
But, to be honest with you... the first successful commercial use of carbon nano-technology will likely be some weird, kinky sex thing. That's just the way the World works.

Wouldn't the Irukandji be more potent than the Chironex if it was the same size as it's cousin? Since a tiny sting from a Fleckeri only causes scarring, but no hospital or long-lasting symptoms like the Irukandji?
@GaldirEonai7 жыл бұрын
The thing about the Irukandji-Syndrome-causing box jellies is that their venom is _initially_ quite mild. Many victims don't even notice the initial sting. It's just that an hour or two _after_ the sting, through a mechanism that isn't fully understood yet, the secondary effects kick off, and they're _evil_. Meanwhile, with a Chironex sting you _definitely_ know that you've been stung, and the effect is very, very rapid. Many fatalities occur when victims suffer from circulatory collapse or heavy cramping while still trying to get back to shore and simply drown.
@Blue-r4b7 жыл бұрын
The Australian Box Jellyfish Chironex Fleckeri known as the (Sea Wasp) is the deadliest creature on our Planet. Chironexs can kill you in 2 minutes. The Australian Box Jellyfish Irukandji is the 2nd deadliest creature on our Planet. After getting stung by Irukandji (painless, or mosquito bite sensation) it take 15-30 minutes for the venom to reach thru your Lymphatic system (lymphs nodes) will the painful effects kick in, also in some cases Irukandji Jellyfish can cause Irukandji Syndrome which is unique and devastating on the human body. Irukandji syndrome can last for days, months even years.
@Blue-r4b4 жыл бұрын
If Irukandji were the size of Chironexs the moment your stung you die instantly. Then Irukandji would be the most lethal.
