Seen a few at ewood Bridge near helmshore,, these were fish took from ribble , this was about 10 years ago they were seen for a couple of years slowly moving down stream , , dont no the stocking situation on the river ,,, lost some very big fish in a few places on the irwell from Ramsbottom area and burrs , some definitely massive trout bigger than my 6lb plus pb and others must have been barbel, tho i have caught a 5lb koi carp so who knows ,, either way thats a rare fish in the irwell

My first double came out in 2006 so no doubt these fish were in many years before I found them. Had over 10 different fish that were doubles and I knew of a hand full of fish that were big doubles,there were two really big fish of around 14lb that I chased for years but they moved around a lot.... biggest I managed was 13lb 4oz ( on the float) and I managed 3 other 12lbers. Two different doubles in one session ( 10lbers) and I had up to 7 barbs out in a day on 3 occasions. Lots of different fish 6lb to 9lb. A big uncaught group of fish that had never been caught or seen an anglers bait. Over the next few years the shoal slowly dispersed through being cault and disturbed until I stopped fishing the length of river that held them in about 2012 give or take?.the fish dried up and disappeared ( lots of pre baiting and very early mornings and late evenings walking the bank and just looking, gone). I've fished the irwell since I was 15 years of age, I've seen and witnessed many a strange day with fish and other strange events...I am no 54 years old.. I've had some excellent days on the irwell with big chub bags containing big chub and a few individuals of 6lb..the barbel years were a dream I was in a state of dreaming,it didn't sink in for a few years what was going on and being achieved, best fishing years of my life. Met some good friends along the way and some others, less said about them the better..utter ass holes..I have moved away from the irwell and spend my free time on the Ribble now, no doubt one day I will give the irwell another crack for old times sake. Tight lines.
