I was invited to see 5SOS the day Youngblood came out, they did a secret free concert for Apple Music in NYC. It was insane and one of the best experiences ever. They had free snacks and drinks (cocktails too!) and the setup was a rectangular stage with 3 rows of chairs on the long sides, kind of like a fashion show. Even in the 3rd row you were no more than 15ft away from them. They played every song on the album and all their other hits.

As a touring photographer/videographer for bands and musicians, I’d say no. Soundcheck is a lot of working out kinks, complaining, and playing only parts of songs while the LD blasts lights in everybody’s face. If you’re a super fan I guess it would be cool to witness your favorite band soundcheck. But I honestly skip every soundcheck I can lol
@mysticmushroom41982 жыл бұрын
It's not an actual sounccheck, you can usually hear them doing that through the walls whilst waiting lol. The soundcheck experience is when 5sos play 2 or 3 songs (usually ones that aren't on the setlist or they don't play often) and then do a q&a with the fans. People with soundcheck also get a few small exclusive merch items and early entry into the standing area for the actual concert

Quick Comment - it's amazing how the most hardcore of Metal Shows with mosh pits and 5k standing room GA audiences are more well behaved and take care of fellow concert goers better than all the stories I hear from other, less stereotypically hardcore, big musical acts. (Or at least they were when I was going to shows with 5000+ Mosh pit festivals) And being the dad in the room... or older brother maybe - Having been to multiple all-day GA festivals with limited seating... People need to listen to, and really hear, Amanda's point near the end when she's talking about people in the crowd collapsing, and realize that yeah, a lot of bodies makes everything incredibly hot when you are one of the bodies in that crowd. I can not stress enough how hot it can get when you have a thousand plus bodies tightly packed together with no air circulation between them. If you have any problems with breathing, like Asthma, there will be moments where it hits you, hard. I am lucky enough to be very, very tall in direct comparison to most people. 6'3" tall. I am so tall that when the air gets so hot I can't breath normally or it gets overwhelming, I can tilt my head back, look straight up, and suck down some good air, because I am a full head or two above all the other heaters I'm smooshed against. If I were not as tall as I am, I would probably have gone down a few times in the past when the crowd just shunted crazy amounts of heat. And while I'm not an imposingly thick or muscular figure, I have been a collegiate athlete and have that height enough that people notice me and do/will get out of my way enough whether I'm moving toward the stage, or away from it. Likely more than 95% of you all are not that lucky, and no matter where you are, when you go to shows like this, you are huffing the heaviest, sweatiest 120+ degrees of air you will ever experience. If you are trying to stay close to the stage, make sure you have a drink on hand, stay hydrated, if you start overheating, don't be afraid to pour it out on your head for a quick cooldown. Have, or make, a friend at the show that not only can, but also will, help carve a path through the crowd to get you out to the good air (or medical help) you need (and back in when you recover). Especially if you are small and demure and have problems doing that yourself. Also, don't be afraid to tell that friend "I need to get out of here" before you are literally 2m from passing out. I know it can be exciting and amazing at live shows, but the last thing anyone wants is for you to pass out from heat exhaustion/stroke and for you to miss half the show. Or worse. Gods... I feel like a parent now... but in 20 years, when you think back on concert experiences like this... as great as they are, you will realize how crazy and potentially dangerous some of those experiences actually were.
@Phengophobia2 жыл бұрын
I have to agree. I've spent full eight hours standing in total for a concert (waiting + short soundcheck + actual concert), and the most considerate crowds were always at metal concerts. There have been mosh pits right behind me and a random person would make sure I don't get hurt. Rather than the crazy people most would expect metal fans to be, they're very much aware what's going on and really cherish the concert experience, in my opinion.
@legsorcist2 жыл бұрын
the difference is there’s an understanding and expectation when it comes to the potential dangers at metal shows that doesn’t exist at bigger/different events. the fan community is a bit more insular and there’s commonly understood etiquette people attending get to make sure everyone is safe. the fan culture with bigger, more popular acts is changing really quickly to where a lot of people feel a need to be right up front without realizing that not everyone can be and most of them don’t realize what’s happening or expect anything bad can happen. i think a lot of these artists and venues need to make it very clear that everyone’s safety needs to be a priority at these events and let fans know beforehand what they can and can’t do

@@Phengophobia I've been the border for some of those pits. Not my favorite place, but sometimes circumstances make it part of my duty at a concert to make sure the people in the pit stay up and that I, and the people behind me, don't get blindsided. Just like it's the job of the people behind me to make sure to give me a little bit of support if a body hits me hard enough to knock me back a few steps. Frequently I've also been an active member of some of those pits. It is amazing how fast some people there grab your arm and haul you back up to your feet when you get fully knocked down. i did soundcheck and meet and greet for a 5SOS show back in 2016(it was my 3rd or 4th time seeing them live at the time) and it was really fun! meet and greet was literally 10 seconds long, like i’m talking *walk up get in place for picture* “hi, how are you!” *click* “bye thank you for everything love the music!” *gets rushed away*. (not their fault it was quick i get it that’s how they were run at the time) but it was still memorable and meant a lot to me at the time :’) what’s a bit ironic is 2 years later ran into calum and ashton at starbucks outside of my hotel for the meet you there tour and that itself was a much more meaningful and genuine interaction than anything i could have paid for! they were so sweet and we actually talked for a few minutes. they let me take pictures with them! and it was totally in their right to say no when i asked. i was so nervous because i didn’t want to bother them while they were out before the show but they were so kind and really funny! those conversations i had with each of them gave me a glimpse in of how genuine these guys really are. i also attended soundcheck for BTS back in april and that was also super fun. i think soundcheck in my eyes is always worth it if you like the artist as a person and as musicians/singers, because those little intimate moments are really special and always fun to look back on :’) (if it’s reasonably priced of course) anyways this video brought on a lot of nostalgia as i haven’t been following them as closely over the last few years but still really love them as a band and happy to see them doing well! i’m glad you had a fun experience :’)

I was in the pit and people were dropping so much it honestly took away from the show because of how stressed it made me. My friend and I were near the front and went to the back before the encore so we could leave faster and people were very good about letting us get through walking to the back of the pit.

I did soundcheck for a kpop group, ateez. They're my gfs fave group so I got us the basic tier for soundcheck. It was $99 and the more vip was $199. The difference was, the vip went in first and got to stay for a little q&a [I think] and a group picture and a signed lanyard from one random member. When we got to go in, they were doing their actual legit soundcheck for the show and we could hear them perform. At one point everyone was screaming and cheering for them from behind the curtains that we were in. It was interesting. When we finally went to see them, they did like a "fake" soundcheck where they did maybe like 2 or 4 songs?? And talked to us a little bit then said bye. It was my first soundcheck and I was like, I spend 100 bucks for this?! I got a better experience just behind the curtains hearing their actual soundcheck 😭 but my gf loved it so in the end that's what really mattered.

I think the capacity is a venue issue. I agree that someone on the band's team should have a good understanding of their audience and they should inform the venue that the fans might need to be protected from themselves, but at the end of the day it's the people running the venue who need to know what security is capable of. Hopefully after this concert then venue will say to themselves, "just because we CAN cram 4000 people in here, that doesn't mean we SHOULD"

I was in the live industry. Shows are often delayed for production issues. All of the sound, lights, and everyone has to be ready to go at the same time and that doesn't always happen. nah, you're not alone in the 'feeling lame' and wanting to sit down now. earlier this month I went to my first punk show and it was amazing!!! my friend and I went to see Turnstile and we were SO close to the stage. there was NO barricade, in fact people constantly climbed on stage and were crowdsurfing and uh I hated that so much lol. there were about 3 or 4 openers and it was HOT outside. (i'm in texas) it was cramped the whole evening and we were close to the mosh pit so we kept getting pushed around. all fine and bearable until Turnstile came out. The band came out and played all but one note before the crowd went crazy and rushed to the stage. I immediately lose my friend and fall over, breaking my popsocket on my phone and my knees were so weak after standing for several hours that I couldn't get up and several bystanders had to pull me up, lol. I ended up pushing my way to the back of the pit and then went up to the bar section to sit down. (and I STILL had to get help going up the stairs bc people were leaning on the railings and in the way) and then I was working the opening shift the next day so I got 3 hrs of sleep and was a mess towards the end of my shift lol. I literally did not get home until like 1am and I had to be at work at 5:30am (and I usually have to wake up like 2 hrs before bc I work at an airport which entails driving to employee parking, taking the bus to my terminal, going through TSA, and then walking like 10 mins to where I actually work so at least an hr is dedicated to getting to work) I took like an hour taking a shower and then preparing my bag/clothes for work and then took a glorified nap at 2am.

Honestly, what I love about concerts is the atmosphere as well. I‘m nearly always having a seated place because I tend to be claustrophobic inside a packed crowd, but it‘s great anyway. The largest concert I went to was a stadium filled with 45.000 people over all for a German rock band (I am from Germany) and even with those kinds of concerts and the standing room being huge on the usual playing field, I never saw a problem with security when people were falling, dropping and panicking. But maybe that’s just the manners by the concert audiences of the artists and bands that I love. I‘m agreeing with you on the support and/or special act thing too: there are quite some songs that I only found because they were in some way presented at a concert I visited.

I did the VIP experience for JPSaxe. I think the venue in Philly held like a thousand, and there were 15 of us at Meet and Greet. We each got to talk to him for a few minutes, he also made sure the song we each wanted to hear most made the set list. During a wait, hey split us into teams of 3 to fill out a JP themed crossword puzzle. The winning team got their crossword puzzle autographed with a note from JP. But all the teams “won a prize” which is when he walked out again with his guitar and played 2 unreleased song. He literally stood 10 feet in front of us, we made a little semi circle around him on the floor, and it was magical! We got to get merch and food then in the venue, and we all got barricade.

So 90% of the concerts I’ve been to (freelance merch designer, photographer, and promoter) have been the tiniest venues. I’m always there for technical soundchecks, and I genuinely have the best time. It’s where I’ve made several friends, and where I found new clients! I feel like if I had to pay to be there? I may not want to.

Also side note- barricade is genuinely an experience that after I did once? I was okay 😂 I saw Waterparks during their entertainment tour, and after being compressed between 20 million teenage girls as a young adult? I was finished. I stepped back into the rest of standing room after all the openers. I had actually only gone for I Don’t Know How But They Found Me, and Dallon walked down into the crowd and ended up standing *right* on top of my feet (literally) the entire time he was on the floor. After that I was okay with not being that close to people 😂

As a professional audio engineer, production manager, and LD with a background in venue security, I can say that watching this video was wholesome in the way that my jobs are still very secretive. An audience atttended ‘soundcheck’ is just a different form of guest interaction or a meet and greet. I’ve worked a lot of them after doing the real soundcheck, which for headliners happens hours and hours if not the day before. In terms of security, that is a more serious issue. During the pandemic a lot of venue employees and production contractors felt very unstable and there has been mass industrially shortages in every field for the most part. Security isn’t immune to issues related to learning on the job. When I returned as a venue security guard post-pandemic I realized very quickly that almost none of my old co-workers returned, even the few who had worked for my venue for 30+ years came back. So every show for the first few months there were many people doing jobs they never had before. Part of the resin I quit doing security was the fact that I was unable to trust my new coworkers to do their jobs right or take them seriously. The amount of times I’ve watch a bag pass a searcher with a visible knife or pepper spray is astounding. So yeah! Be mindful of who is around you at shows and know that many people there do not have your best interest in mind. I've seen people step over unconscious patrons to get to the bar while I was waiting for EMS. Scary shit, Astroworld was not surprising to many production people abroad.

When they came here some weeks ago I was at the sitting area and definitely saw a lot of people going out of the standing up area. Also after the concert I read lots of people telling their horror stories about being pushed around or threaten by others in the standing up area, every artist should have sits on their shows for everyone’s safety.

it's crazy to me comparing my concert experience pre and post-pandemic, especially on the topic of people passing out. when i saw keshi in brussels i swear 10 people passed out that night with just one opener and then keshi, this was in april and it wasn't even that hot outside yet. i think people are lining up before concerts insanely early moreso than they used to before the pandemic, and then don't take care of themselves when they're lined up. the experience in the US may be different idk i haven't gone to a concert in the state since before the pandemic (though i am seeing 5sos twice in july so i'll be curious to see how the experience differs from my experience in belgium/netherlands) i'm curious if anyone else thinks this is a fairly new phenomenon, i know it's not new for people to line up super early but it seems like it's much worse/leading to people getting sick/hurt more than it used to
@sydverse1272 жыл бұрын
also on the "is soundcheck worth it" question, generally honestly no haha. i haven't ever done 5sos soundcheck, the only soundcheck i've done was for ateez (kpop group) and looking back it wasn't all that worth it to me other than being able to get a really good spot in the crowd once it's over. for the soundcheck package i had they did 2-3 songs and talked with the crowd a bit and then left, it was over in MAYBE a half hour. i think i paid ~80 euros for it on top of my ticket which was ~75. amazing amazing concert experience and getting early merch and a good spot was very nice and i don't regret getting it, since it was a much more intimate performance compared to the full crowd, but if you aren't a super invested fan of the person it definitely doesn't seem worth the cost/time/stress
@legsorcist2 жыл бұрын
i think it’s mainly that more casual fans are starting to get into camping out before shows that’s causing issues. in my friend circles it’s really common to go to the venue many hours before showtime, but because there’s a lot of people that aren’t used to that and don’t have experience they come unprepared to just sit outside and it can definitely be dangerous. on social media, all the videos people see of concerts that make them want to go see a live show are usually from right up front so i think a lot of people feel like they need to get that spot to enjoy it, or even just so they have the best content to post in hopes that it’ll get more attention. hopefully venues will start to take notice and help people who are obviously unprepared
@angietoonz66052 жыл бұрын
i think people are passing out more cause we've gone 2 years not being smushed together for concerts and our bodies aren't used to that anymore. I also think a lot more people have anxiety and freak out more with tight spaces post pandemic.

VH1's Storyteller seems the most ideal as compared to full blown concerts. Smaller size, you are able to seat, feels more intimate with the artists (who you are there for), and the artists are more relaxed. Of course it all goes back to what people appreciate and want from the experience.

I guess it's because of different venue prices and stuff, but the tickets are so much cheaper in the UK I think. Soundcheck tickets in the UK have a GA admission ticket to the actual concert included, so for this tour, when I went on to buy tickets there is an option to get a GA ticket or to get a soundcheck ticket which also includes either a GA standing ticket or seated ticket (close seats). So you don't buy a ticket and then buy an upgrade over here. GA tickets cost about £40 for standing, I'm not sure about the seating - I would guess the closer seats are more expensive. And soundcheck tickets (standing) cost £140, and that price INCLUDES the ticket to the concert

I agree that standing in the back of the pit is far superior to suffocating close to the stage. It’s way easier to enjoy a show that way. Soundcheck is really not my favorite thing…I did it for BTS once and it was fun but I don’t think I’d deliberately shoot for it again…everyone was competing to get noticed and I couldn’t seen at all lol At least you weren’t at a kpop show where you have to fight fans bringing in enormous DSLR cameras and trying to block your view

I saw 5SOS with VIP sound check in Chicago 2018, experience was almost identical (even down to the actual sound check starting 30-40 minutes later than it said, curious if that’s just how they always roll?) Loved the chance to hear them answer questions AND, the band/crowd made a point during sound check to be quiet while they were playing. Like don’t scream along, we came to hear the performance. I appreciated that since you can’t ask that of a whole venue obviously. Left the barrier to meet non-VIP pals who had GA for the full show, but we ended up squished in pretty close. The floor experience was like swimming through bodies. I would not do a pit for anyone again until I feel a lot better about Covid. Like a lot. Very excited to see them in Chicago this weekend, from an upper seat, with my mask and earplugs. Just did that for Harry Styles and it was the most chilled out vibey concert experience I’ve had. Delightful. (Especially as a slightly older tax paying adult in a sea of teens). Great video as always! (Also they had an all female band called The Aces open in 2018, they are INCREDIBLE, and I’ve loved them ever since if you haven’t, maybe check them out!)

I had the same thing happen to me. I went to the DC show and they were supposed to start at 7:00. Five Seconds of Summer ended coming at around close to 9:00. They also had to rush through their songs just to finish on time. And since the majority were in the GA we all had to stand for the show + the waiting time. Some people started leaving. It ended at like 10:30 *ps, they did have an opening (Pale Waves) act but they were both late by like 30 minutes to an hour.*
@caitlinb352 жыл бұрын
I was at DC as well! They were definitely running pretty late. They didn't rush anything to finish on time to my knowledge though, the show is just basically a marathon start to finish and they do a lot of transitions and cut some songs a bit short. But it was hellish waiting so long for them and opening act to come out, especially after standing all day already.

So I went to 5SOS YB era concert on the first day of Senior Year of high school (aka the last tour pre-pandemic other than the one where they toured with the CS). My older sister bought two tickets (She asked if I wanted to go, since the tickets were 50 bucks each) and I invited my friend who also likes 5SOS. It was super exciting. We went to the Mohegan Sun in CT and was seated in 112. Could they do a vip experience vs a soundcheck? I, personally, if I was doing like a actual soundcheck (specially as a opener) I don’t know if I would like a crowd of 300 teenagers to young adults starring at me being like “Ok what’s next.” AJR’s vip experience (idk how they compare, I think they’re about the same fanbase lvl with 5SOS having a slightly younger fanbase) was tier as my venue had like at most 150 people in the top 2 lvls of vip? They had a special event with the band personally (dodgeball) with a single photo for vip 1 and then vip 2 was a q&a with a party photo. Like you’re paying how much for 5SOS soundcheck and there is like? No little goodie bag? Bare minimum? You paid to stand in the heat and get like extra 30 minutes of music with 5 questions. I don’t see it worth it.

I think sound check is cool overall. I've only gone to one for a group called Twice but they originally included soundcheck and meet and greet as a part of the vip ticket so it was roughly 500 per ticket for a seat near the back of pit. It was a good experience but not worth the price for the ticket without the promised meet and greet(which they pulled a few days after the show sold out). I would do it again for another group but I don't think I would pay more than 300-400 for vip again. Getting in early is VERY nice though. Much less stress overall and a more peaceful experience.

I went to the sold out DC soundcheck and show. My ticket was around $60 so not bad at all!! There were people camped out since at least the day before so I knew I was not about to be in the front. It was pouring when I got there then it was windy then it was nice then it was HOT!!! The sun was RUTHLESS!! We were not near the tour busses unfortunately so we didn't get to see any band members coming in or out. They were so late letting us in too. We didn't get in till around like 5 when we were supposed to be allowed to get in by before 4 so that was confusing. They were also late getting the show started. They didn't start till around 8 which is an HOUR LATE and i was stressed cuz my ride depended on the metro but luckily everything was fine. So yeah my show had a lot of delays too for some reason. Lots of wait time. I was number 594 but was still pretty close to the stage. They sang valentine then had the q&a then they let us choose between Babylon and vapor and then they sang vapor. I wanted Babylon more but i won't complain. Shorter than i expected. I wish they let us ask more questions. They only let us ask like 6 which with the amount of people and wait time, definitely could've fit more. They were also very strict about phones at my Soundcheck as well. I was originally on calum's side cuz that's where my friends were and that's where I ended up being for the show but during q&a i moved to the center so i could see all and wish I stayed there for the show but there's always next time. Ashton was pretty quiet at my Soundcheck. They kinda had to pull him into conversation which i didn't expect based on interview behavior lol. Calum called one fan an angel who asked about the most underrated bass line. Luke said his favorite movie recently is Everything Everywhere All At Once. Calum said Minions lol. Michael asked the fan what their favorite movie recently was. Someone screamed Shrek during the movie question and Luke mocked them which was funny. Michael was genuinely really funny. Anytime heartbreak girl was brought up he would fake cry then he went "pov you're my therapist". They also let us stay at the barricade which was so nice!! They were passing out water left and right and i was dehydrated so it was very much needed. I was also so tired so i was so close to passing out but luckily I didn't. I did see flashlights in areas to get security's attention but nothing was show stopping and i think they at least tried to help. They told us to step back like twice then gave up. Stepping back helped a lot until we were squished again. Once GA got in I was SQUISHED and there were people fighting to get into the front. I was also near the area where the deaf people stood so there were interpreters near me which I thought was cool. I enjoyed the intimacy and secrecy of soundcheck that was fun. I would definitely go again! I want to be front and center or more center next time and then I'll be content with being in the back or balcony so i can breathe but I'm still in my super fan era lol. I brought a bunch of snacks and water in disposable containments which kept me alive while I was waiting from like 1:30 to 5 (highly recommend). I had to buy an umbrella omw to the venue cuz i did not know it was going to rain and not as hard as it was but it came in clutch when it was suddenly hot as hell. I bought the black tour tshirt and I love it!! Their merch is too pricey though they need to chill.

If it weren't for the stranger in front of me that gave me an unopened bottle of water I totally would've collapsed. After about 3 songs of like sitting and standing it was too much so I stood in the back w/ my mom for the rest of the show.
